Words among the Weeds

There’s a great stone in my heart
it originates from time –
the accumulation of silent moments
Hidden deep inside my heart, which sometimes revives in wasteland
among the weeds I love, the bristlegrass, goosefoot and thorny bramble
They lean forwards gently in night rain
where time’s superfluous
I name it ‘graveyard’, and wait while weeds in night rain slowly die
there are few interesting people and things left now
and I’m ready to listen to the rain all night long 
until it wears away the boulder in my heart

Rock Art on Lusen Mountain

could carve out art –
detailed livestock, abstracted wild beasts

granite as paper, so hard

傍晚时分,金边的金湖泛着金光, 
我骚动的心,顿时安静下来。 
夕阳像一个火球,在湖面燃烧。 
我们乘坐一艘红色的游船, 
刻画清晰的红色文字。湖畔人家, 
有树叶拌泥巴盖起的房屋。 
高棉族人穿着略显原始的服饰, 
不由得遥想当年雄壮的歌, 
随后我们把游船划回久远的年代。 
所有红木林渐渐往城里生长, 
每一片枝叶,仿佛都高呼民主, 
船上激动的人均来自海内外。 
此刻的落日,燃烧、沉没, 
而一轮圆月,冉冉升起湖心岛。 
游船终于停泊在靠岸的一角, 
我聆听山间传来一阵又一阵鸟鸣。

In the Suburbs of Phnom Penh

At evening the Golden Lake of Phnom Penh glows 

my restless heart is calmed

the fireball of the setting sun burns on the lake 

We took a red boat 

through red lake script – people on the banks

alongside houses built with leaves and mud

the Khmer people wearing ancient costumes

remind me of great songs from the past

we rowed our boat back into times of long ago

All the redwood forests slowly growing towards town 

as if every branch and leaf were cheering for democracy

the excited passengers were from home and abroad

and now the setting sun was burning, sinking

and a full moon slowly rose from the island in the middle of the lake 

Eventually we moored here on the shoreline  

I listen to the chirps of birds up in the mountains

铁管上的鸟 
孔令剑

一只鸟,在推土机的嘶吼中 
大地震颤,在一个早晨 
麻雀,或斑鸠,它更是一只 
其他的鸟,在自身之外 
一截生锈的铁管,它站立 
从泥土中伸出,像一根长笛 
大地正被重建,在表皮 
而它的欢快蕴藏体内,像 
童年的灵魂,一声声鸣叫 
把一个个音符抛向空中 
在太阳的舞台,它蹦跳着 
来到铁管的断口,低头,啄水 
一滴一滴,像捡拾,又像丢弃 
水的礼物,光的记忆

Bird on an Iron Pipe

A bird in a roar of bulldozers 

earth trembling in the early morning

sparrow or turtledove – it’s more like another

species remote from itself perched

on a rusty iron pipe sticking out

of an expanse of mud like a flute

The skin of the earth is being reformed

while its joy remains within

like the spirit of childhood yells

notes thrown up into the sky

on the stages of the sun, dancing

to the broken end of the pipe, dipping its head for water

drop by drop as if taking then discarding

the gift of water and memory of light

本辑诗歌主要关注的是生命的韧性、物种之间的关联,以及生命如何迫使自己跳出所处的范畴和隔层。在第一首诗歌《秘密》中,作者阿步引导读者反思自我的本质及我们与其他生物和环境的深刻联系。诗人传达了一种愿望,希望将自己的秘密播种在阳光耀眼的屋外。

等夏天,我站到它们中间

我就拥有了绿阴

我要让它们的枝叶把我围绕

我要让它们再长回我的身体


全诗以光明为走向,排除内心的黑暗,否则秘密可能会演变成令人痛苦的焦虑,脱离更为宽广的社会和自然世界。

第二首诗是马泽平的《草间辞》。这里存在着一种与其他生命形式非常相契合的声音,尤其是那些在自然界中坚韧不拔的顽强植物。这些荒草,连同它们赖以生存的雨水,代表了一种巨大的自然力量,足以抵抗萧条和绝望的感受。这些消极的特质在诗的第一行被称为“我心头藏着的一颗巨石”。最后,本诗以令人印象深刻的句子结尾:

我愿意整夜听雨,滴穿心头的巨石

我们的第三首诗是刘大伟的《卢森岩画》。我们远古祖先的骨头、岩石和刀刃,与他们所创造出来的美妙艺术品形成了鲜明的对比。这些岩画也许是为了有助于狩猎或是抵御邪恶势力和敌人而制作的法术。它们的悠久历史启示诗人思考过去几个世纪以来,星辰俯瞰大地的景象。河流告诉我们,时间在不断流逝,但有些东西几乎是恒定不变的。

除了采集、御敌,沉重的刀斧

——具象的家畜,写意的猛兽

都健壮,都灵巧,动感十足

更有浩瀚星空,用一条拐弯的大河

诗歌《金边郊外》是谢夷珊创作的,故事发生在夜幕降临的湖面上。夕阳西下,圆月上升。水面上逐渐暗淡的光线形成了明亮的波纹和形似文字的图案。随着太阳下落,诗人和他的同伴所乘坐的红色游船与落日的红色相互辉映。湖面的金光平复了诗人不安的情绪。与此同时,诗人也被站在岸边观望的几位高棉族人穿着的传统服饰所吸引。诗歌的结尾部分暗示了诗歌的节律与山中夜鸟的鸣叫之间的关系。可见,这首诗融合了多种主题和影像,使之连结成一个光、民主和歌唱得以延续的统一体。

我们乘坐一艘红色的游船,

刻画清晰的红色文字。湖畔人家,

有树叶拌泥巴盖起的房屋。

高棉族人穿着略显原始的服饰,

第五首,也是最后一首诗是孔令剑的作品《铁管上的鸟》。本诗的场景设定在一片荒凉的建筑工地上,到处是重型机械的噪音和震动。然而,从泥泞的土地中露出的生锈旧铁管却被形容成“像一根长笛”,这是一种正面的表现;同样的,鸟儿的存在也是如此。鸟儿在断裂的管道一端啜饮着水,而诗人则想象着隐藏在被毁坏的大地之下的生活。诗人将这种生活与遥远的童年记忆和孩子们的欢呼声联系在了一起:

大地正被重建,在表皮

而它的欢快蕴藏体内,像

童年的灵魂,一声声鸣叫

把一个个音符抛向空中

This group of poems is concerned with the resilience of life, the connectedness of living things and the way life forces its way out of categories and compartments. In the first poem, ‘Secrets’ by Abu, the reader is prompted to reflect on the nature of selfhood, and the ways in which we are deeply connected to other living things and our environment. The speaker expresses a wish to plant personal secrets outside the house in the full light of day.


waiting for summer I’ll stand among them

in a green shade

surrounded by their branches and leaves

I want them to grow back into my body  


The poem reaches out into the light, rejecting private darkness where secrets may become bitter anxieties, cut off from the wider social and natural world.

Poem two is Ma Zeping’s ‘Words among the Weeds’. Again we have a voice which is very much in tune with other forms of life, especial the tough plants that are so resilient in nature. These weeds, together with the rain that enables them to live, represent a vast nature force that is capable of opposing feelings of stagnation and despair. These negative qualities are called ‘the great stone in my heart’ in the very first line of the poem. The poem ends with the memorable lines:


and I’m ready to listen to the rain all night long

until it wears away the boulder in my heart.


Our third poem is ‘Rock Art on Lusen Mountain’ by Liu Dawei. The bones, rock and blades of our remote ancestors are contrasted with the beautiful art they created. The images were perhaps spells to assist with the hunt, or to ward off evil forces and enemies. Their great age inspires the speaker to think about the stars looking down on the landscape over the passing centuries. The river reminds us that time is constantly flowing by while certain things remain almost the same.


For hunting, harvest or defence, the heavy knife and axe

could carve out art –

detailed livestock, abstracted wild beasts

robust, vivid, energetic

the vast starry sky pours out millennia of time

over a great bending river


‘In the Suburbs of Phnom Penh’ is a poem by Xie Yishan which is set on a lake as evening falls. The setting of the sun is counterbalanced by the rising of a full moon. The dying light on the surface of the water creates bright ripples and patterns resembling script. The red colour of the boat in which the speaker and their companions travel is connected to the redness of the sun as it goes down. The glow of the lake calms the speaker’s agitated spirits. The speaker is also drawn to the traditional costumes of the Khmer people, some of whom stand watching on the shoreline. The ending of the poem implies a relationship between the cadences of the poem and the song of the evening birds up in the mountains. So the poem unifies a range of themes and images and blends them into a unified whole where light, democracy and song live on.


We took a red boat

The fifth and final poem is ‘Bird on an Iron Pipe’ by Kong Lingjian. The setting is a rather desolate wasteland, a building site dominated by the noise and vibrations of heavy machinery. Yet the rusty old pipe that emerges from the mud is described as ‘like a flute’, so this is a positive note, as is the presence of the bird. The bird sips water from the broken end of the pipe while the speaker imagines the hidden life below the damaged ground. The speaker associates this life with distant memories of childhood and the happy calls of children:


The skin of the earth is being reformed

while its joy remains within

like the spirit of childhood yells

notes thrown up into the sky

“汉诗英译”栏目自2018年10月启动至今,现已完成第一阶段的翻译工作,与美国同道出版社合作,从《诗刊》和中国诗歌网“每日好诗”中精选800余首诗歌译成英文,推动当代中文诗歌走向世界。

从2022年4月起,中国诗歌网与剑桥康河出版社合作开展汉诗英译工作。

翻译团队为剑桥康河诗社,它是英国剑桥康河出版社(Cam Rivers Publishing) 旗下的诗歌翻译与编辑团队,由英国国家学术院院士、剑桥大学社会人类学教授、剑桥徐志摩诗歌艺术节创始人艾伦·麦克法兰(Alan Macfarlane) 担任主席。团队由英国资深诗人与文学编辑彼得·休斯 (Peter Hughes)、露西·汉姆尔顿 (Lucy Hamilton),以及其他多位毕业于剑桥大学和其他知名高校的译者与学者组成。

“汉诗英译”每期发布五首汉英对照诗歌,并附国际诗人的点评,同步在中英两国推出,欢迎各位诗友关注和批评!
