……

Sorghum

by Zhang Zhonghai

unlike soybean, wheat or millet, the humble sorghum

thrives wherever there is soil, wherever there is wind

as the eldest son of the grain family

it muscles its way in as soon as it touches earth

with roots like a strong man’s tough blue veins

holds on like an eagle’s claw, tenaciously

it clutches earth with an iron grip and grows

inspiring rivers, villages and fields to emulate

its vital force

the sorghum knows when to bend instead of breaking

it knows when to go with the flow

to sustain its ancient species –

it’s unstoppable and even after harvest

the plant retains its strength

holding on into late autumn

on mornings full of dew

the stubble of the sorghum stands erect

defying the coldness of the light

Bird Watching

by Lu Ye

a group of magpies then a flock of iridescent starlings

fly over the bare woods opposite my window

then a gang of sparrows rises and falls

on the roof of the house across the way

in search of food or company

later two blackbirds descend on a high twig

testing its give and resilience

with the dark mass of their two bodies

then I see a hoopoe and a shrike

fly straight from the pages of ancient literature

one lets joy bloom over its head

one conceals escape and conflict in its heart

finally a jackdaw flaps towards the treetops

against a blue sky confronting a chilling wind

extending winter’s emptiness with lonely cries

reminding me of Kafka

Lightness

by Han Wenge

tell me if your only book is light –

if the only thing you’ve written

says little about nothing

tell me how much that little thing might weigh

tell me if a soul is light, lighter than a feather

all great souls belong to nothingness

you say light is not light because it generates all things

like a promise that illuminates everything

the words you speak float through the air

they weigh no more than raindrops

tell me how much the silence in a temple weighs

coming from a soul as light as silence

when all that's left is one's memories

tell me the weight of those memories

the memories of the tribe cannot be light

and the world cannot be light when you return to weight it

it is a story trapped in amber –

and is the gravitational force between the planets weak or strong

the force which binds the spheres and forms the universe

like two people in love or a musical composition –

tell me if love is light when it cannot resist a breeze

yet sometimes can withstand a storm

Dream

by Ma Zhanxiang

flowers were left on the chair – but I couldn’t see your lawn

the white pine stretched up its empty hand – the clouds were unreachable

it couldn’t catch their shadows. Two magpies from years gone by

on the dead branches of my hometown, its last fruit gone

in the great lake I met the nameless fish and shrimps

that vast expanse of water filled the sky

one city after another spread out at the foot of the mountain

on its slopes a flock of sheep awaits its fate

Wilderness
by Han Zongbao

later I saw that wilderness again
stretched out under leaden skies
no evidence of any boundaries
and haunted still by desolation

a barren land all overgrown with weeds
rough and inhospitable
colours faintly tinged with sadness
and an air of insignificance

this is a painting that you made
I knew its wilderness wasn’t real
but the vision of a broken spirit
now calm once more and whole

Introduction to Batch 39

This group of five poems explores themes connected to the diversity and tenacity of living things. The work celebrates life’s capacity to endure through difficult conditions, to transform and to adapt. The first poem is particularly simple and down-to-earth, grounded in the soil beneath our feet. It is ‘Sorghum’ by Zhang Zhonghai. The poem invites the reader to admire the capacity of this plant to survive in unpromising circumstances. All it needs is a patch of earth. The poet emphasises the plants simple strength:

it muscles its way in as soon as it touches earth

with roots like a strong man’s tough blue veins

holds on like an eagle’s claw, tenaciously

it clutches earth with an iron grip and grows…

Even after the sorghum crop has been harvested, the stubble stands firmly and proudly in the ground, resisting the cold weather. The poem has a symbolic resonance that goes beyond this particular plant. The reader understands that these qualities of adaptability and tenacity are important for all living things, including humans.

‘Bird Watching’ by Lu Ye is the second poem and this text is a celebration of diversity. Here we meet a wide range of birds – no fewer than seven species are mentioned. The unusual aspect of the poem is the way it links these birds to literature. Lu Ye cleverly associates the hoopoe and shrike with classical literary texts. At the conclusion of the poem the jackdaws are associated with Franz Kafka, thus bringing us back to the modern world.

finally a jackdaw flaps towards the treetops

against a blue sky confronting a chilling wind

extending winter’s emptiness with lonely cries

reminding me of Kafka

‘Lightness’ by Han Wenge is a strong and surprising poem which makes us question the weight and importance of things that matter in this world. The human spirit, words, light itself, and silence may have no measurable weight, but in a sense they outweigh blocks of metal and rock. Similarly, the great gravitational forces that maintain the complex order of the solar system and universe may be invisible, unmeasurable. And yet they are crucial. The poem ends with the perception that love, too, may seem insubstantial but in our lives may turn out to be the strongest force of all.

and is the gravitational force between the planets weak or strong

the force which binds the spheres and forms the universe

like two people in love or a musical composition –

tell me if love is light when it cannot resist a breeze

yet sometimes can withstand a storm

The fourth of these poems is Ma Zhanxiang’s ‘Dream’. The elements of everyday life are dislocated and recombined. The flowers abandoned on a chair suggest that we have witnessed the end of a relationship. The tree reaches out for something but its branches remain empty. The speaker cannot name the creatures which live in the lake. Other branches are dead and hold no more fruit. The sky itself seems to have been flooded by the waters of the lake. At the end, the sheep do not know what is coming next.  The future is threatened and uncertain.

that vast expanse of water filled the sky

one city after another spread out at the foot of the mountain

on its slopes a flock of sheep awaits its fate

Ma Zhanxiang creates an unstable sense of anxiety and uncertainty with regard to the future.

The final poem is ‘Wilderness’ by Han Zongbao. The first two stanzas of this cleverly-structured poem seem to describe an uninviting landscape, sad and uncultivated. But in the final stanza the reader discovers that the landscape is actually a painting created by someone the speaker knows. The painting was evidence of a difficult and depressing period of the painter’s life, a period which has now fortunately passed.

this is a painting that you made

I knew its wilderness wasn’t real

but the vision of a broken spirit

now calm once more and whole
