Peter Hughes

The current group of poems starts with ‘Old Photo’ by Ye Yanbin, a text that ponders the mysteries of time, change and memory. The photograph offers a glimpse into a moment of the past, a seemingly more innocent time for the poet when the hopes of youth were bright and strong, when experience had not taken its toll on youthful optimism. Yet even the photograph itself is subject to the laws of change and the poet describes its physical degradation as it ‘turns even older / yellowed, dog-eared, badly creased…’ This is echoed at the end by the poet getting older in a world of increasing change.

Han Dong, in ‘Loved: a Narrative’, has created a moving evocation of a love story that was never really based on love. A man reads the diary of the woman who has left him. He discovers that she didn’t love him in the way he had imagined. Time has passed and he remembers the things they had done together, the warmth and affection they had shared. And these are the memories he values and holds onto, as recompense for a love that never really existed as such.

‘Listening to the Unfinished Symphony by Franz Schubert’ is a poem by Zhang Zhan that celebrates the power of great music to arouse overwhelming emotions. The sense of solitude and and natural grandeur flows into a feeling of exposure and vulnerability, and a desire to join with a fellow human being to do justice to and share this music and the world.

Chuan Mei creates a more ambivalent sense of mystery in ‘The Addressee’. The reader is introduced to a correspondence which seems to be between two people who have been estranged for many years. Then we find that the speaker is actually writing to himself or herself. Has the writer become so different from their previous self that they now feel like a different person?  Is the past too remote to allow communication? The piece creates a very inviting and satisfying puzzle for the reader, a puzzle which only increases with the concluding lines, ‘Now I must decide / on the best way to respond.’

The fifth and final poem is ‘The Contract’ by Han Zongbao. This is also the shortest of these five poems being just four lines long. These lines provide an extraordinarily condensed vision of life. It proceeds from the imaginative excitement of childhood where almost anything seems possible. This shifts in just one line to the ‘blank page in middle age’ when life may seem tedious and empty of any real meaning. This in turn gives way to premonitions of death, life ending as suddenly and inexplicably as a dream may vanish.

Old Photo
By Ye Yanbin

The old photograph turns even older
yellowed, dog-eared, badly creased
The picture lost its last few leaves
in some autumn long ago
That ancient cloud
has disappeared without a trace
The river that flows into the picture
floods every summer, runs dry each winter

Yet the photo never really ages
remaining in the realm of youth
like the pages of a calendar
still holding stocks of faded fantasies
knowledge chalked in white upon a blackboard
the romances of memory
faces that had not yet learned to dissemble
youth still guarding all those youthful promises

What turns old is me, outside the photo
the restless world around me hectic with change

Loved: a Narrative
By Han Dong

She had never loved him–
this was a secret, but later on
it was a secret that she didn’t need to keep
or broadcast: she just moved on
leaving behind some clothes and a diary
She promised to come back and collect them
but never did
It wasn’t a lie, or intentional
it just happened that the secret
unravelled like a knot as time went by
When he went through the diary
as though suffocating in the air of an ancient tomb
he wasn’t hurt
but just felt pity
He viewed their bond as a strong and deep affection
even though she had never loved
There were warm and amicable feelings
that the lack of love made more unforgettable
The journeys made together
became more meaningful
hugs and tears
of affection and a hunger for
that boundless love
that never was

Listening to the Unfinished Symphony by Franz Schubert
By Zhang Zhan

I didn’t know what loneliness meant
constant solitude and silence
accompanied only by a great bird’s outstretched wings
snow-capped mountains in the distance
endless paths through spring
the scent of roses free to everyone
and the persistent echoes of my heart

I used to sing alone
for singing’s sake
that made me happy
free to be myself
Sometimes I seemed to turn invisible
transparent

But then
one day
I listened to Schubert’s Unfinished Symphony
with a red conch
My heart was like the creature from the shell
plucked out and exposed to all the world
I turned into the textures of the symphony
where music was water
and I was water’s stain

I have to find a fellow listener to share this

The Addressee
By Chuan Mei

‘Don’t you remember me?’, you asked in the letter
‘I’m not sure you’re the same as the person in my memory’, I answered
there were no more letters after that
as if one of us were missing in action
Locating a spare stamp, it is now my turn to ask
‘Do you remember me, and will you write?’
On the paper I write this sentence in a steady hand
and rummage for an envelope
on which I write my own name, my own address
the letter headed with only the name of this city
the envelope sporting an ordinary stamp from 1995
I take the subway to a post office seven stations away
and ceremoniously post the letter
surprisingly it is delivered to me the very next morning
without any delays
the stamp comes back to me like a homing pigeon
it proudly bears a postmark like a medal
Now I must decide
on the best way to reply

The Contract

By Han Zongbao

The childhood contract is a vivid dream

then a blank page in middle age

graveyard grass in later life

the grass in the dream diminishing to just a scrap of paper
