——敏感的触须;

Butterfly Specimen
By Hu Xian

 – Sensitive antennae

 – Flight under glass.

So long this moment:

as if the growth of scales and soft armour had just begun...

Patterns on wings, constant foreboding.

Visceral, deeper shadows.

 – Go and fly,

Southwards, a country lonelier than the sea and setting sun.

The serenity on your back

turns present into future.

Butterfly
By Lu Huiyan

Butterflies need solitude too, when gingerly testing the earth

with delicate feet. Sometimes

a flock of white butterflies steps through wild grasses

fluttering like folded scraps of paper

But this one is silent and colorful

the dotted patterns on the wings resemble eyes

that seem to be studying the sky

It flits into a massive footprint

a labyrinth of patterns and stops in confusion

The maze might be left by a man’s leather boot

treading by in the rain. It’s almost as if part of him

and his personality had been left in the wilderness

like a circuit board connected to the earth

deep grooves, preserving memory and rain

and a butterfly lost in a person’s footprint

so what impression will we leave

as the insect waves its legs then stirs

to flap its wings – the places through which  it walks and flies

are authentic parts of this infinite world

Wild Peach Tree
By Lin Li

At the end of the field ridge is a wild peach tree

in spring

the flowers are as gorgeous

as a heart full of happiness, radiating

a clear, clean scent

Now countless fruits

turn from green to pink

waiting for the chirping pecks of birds

in search of the sweetest

Hello, wild peach tree

Thank you for looking after

the heartbroken man in your shade

He loves, so much

Showers
By Tan Xiao

Before the rain properly stops

the clouds are blown away by the wind

Some chase the sun for light and warmth

Some chase dark clouds to be hidden and drenched

Me, I do both.

Under a tree, I have one more umbrella than the leaves

Under a cloud, I have one more

pair of rooted feet

After the shower, the real darkness comes

Lightning disappears too fast, as if it had never been

In boundless silence, I have one more

thunderous heart

Song of the Wild Rose
By Pang Pei

Once I stood alone at the foot of the mountain

slowly turning into bloom

as the air turned suddenly colder

I could see the fields beyond the woods

the green countryside, and the golden fields of wheat

my cycle is useless in the woods

I try hard not to feel so down

and loneliness becomes almost sweet

a form of comfort. I still have memories

and roots with leaves, branches and a future

I share the afternoon wind with the whole forest

It slowly blows in like an unknown wanderer

with an unseen spear and hair awry

swinging back and forth in the taller trees

then suddenly leaping away

Quietly I share with the younger trees

the supple wildness of the wind

sense its loneliness overgrown with moss

listen to a stream murmuring under its long robe

 - the wind always drags the earth’s wet hem

Then a flower calyx appears on my forehead

my vision is blurred with lights and hallucinations

A chill is approaching my body

My spine about to take root in this ground

I’ll be hung on the world’s ravines and thorns

Oh! I am the sleeping briar

I’m the wild rose of the wild mountains

I’m a wild rose riding the fields of April

I can see beyond the woods

Ah! The golden fields and endless green

This selection consists of five poems connected by themes of wildness, the natural world and its connectedness to human experience. In ‘Butterfly Specimen’ by Hu Xian the reader is witness to the contradiction of the delicate flight of a butterfly locked under glass. The very first words, ‘Sensitive antennae’, make us aware that the butterfly can no longer use its delicate equipment to sense its natural surroundings. Life is over, trapped by human curiosity. Time seems to stand still. Yet the poem makes us feel the forces of life continuing, flowing through the surroundings, made visible even in the beautiful patterns on the insect’s wings.

– Go and fly,

Southwards, a country lonelier than the sea and setting sun.

The serenity on your back

turns present into future.

Lu Huiyans Butterflyaddresses a similar subject, but this time the butterfly is very much alive. The delicate creature in this poem finds itself landing in the large footprint of a human. It seems to be confused by these new surroundings, unfamiliar textures and patterns. The poem implicitly asks bigger questions such as what are the traces we humans leave behind us. What traces does a tiny butterfly leave? They may be very different in scale but they are both equally real.

Butterflies need solitude too, when gingerly testing the earth

with delicate feet. Sometimes

a flock of white butterflies step through wild grasses

fluttering like folded scraps of paper

In poem three, ‘Wild Peach Tree’ by Lin Li, the presence of the flowering tree is compared to that of the broken-hearted man who sits in its shade. The flowers seem emblematic of happiness, and the birds then come to enjoy its sweet fruit. In contrast, the man who has been unlucky in love can only sit silently in its shade:

Hello, wild peach tree

Thank you for looking after

the heartbroken man in your shade

He loves, so much

The fourth poem is ‘Showers’ by Tan Xiao. The poem evokes the sudden changes from sun to rain we experience in showery weather. We may prefer the moments of sun to those of rain, but the speaker of the poem celebrates both as being necessary for life:

Some chase the sun for light and warmth

Some chase dark clouds to be hidden and drenched

Me, I do both.

Our final poem in this selection is by far the longest of the group. It is Pang Pei’s ‘Song of the Wild Rose’. The poem has a pleasing symmetry beginning and ending with golden fields of wheat and the green surrounding countryside. This symmetry, a cyclical return, reminds the reader of the regular passage of the seasons. The voice of the poem is identified with the presence of the wild rose tree. It experiences the sun, wind and rain, as well as a sense of solitude. The power and presence of the wind is expressed with particular skill, along with the connectedness to moss and water:

Quietly I share with the younger trees

the supple wildness of the wind

sense its loneliness overgrown with moss

listen to a stream murmuring under its long robe

 - the wind always drags the earth’s wet hem
