This group of poems is dominated by flowers, the seasons and other manifestations of the natural world. The poems raise questions about the relationships between nature and mankind. They emphasise how our spiritual health, as well as our general health, depends on a respectful attitude to nature, and a careful focus on all its changing details and features. The opening poem is ‘Temple of Flowers’ by Shu Chi. From the outset spirituality is associated with the delicate qualities of nature: ‘a temple is made of fragrances’. The poem insists that we should attend to nature with humility and reverence, as if every flower and tree contained divinity.Bees are buzzing around flowersas if a Buddhas sat upon their petalsThis temple is a land of springeach tree grows so as to cultivate its soulIn ‘Memories’ by Ze Ping, the innocent face of a loved one is associated with the daffodils of spring. The poem, which has a rather poignant and regretful tone, goes on to suggest that early promise may be compromised by negative experiences. Once lost, such innocence and potential is hard to regain:We don’t remember how we got hereit’s a long way back to where we startedThe third poem in the group is Fu Sang’s ‘Rosa Multiflora’. Once again we have the explicit connection between flowers and the spiritual right from the beginning of the poem: ‘observing a flower in silence / we touch upon the sacred’. The speaker evokes a fusion of the self with the non-human world and a freedom from the constraints of egoism:may be a clear and empty vaseI hope the flowers will never ceaseto complete me perpetuallyMa Lan’s poem ‘Appreciate Each Sunset’ begins with an evocation of autumn. The whole poem is suffused with a sense of ending: the ending of the year, of the day and of a life. The speaker reminds us to attend to and appreciate every moment of our lives, even as the light begins to fade and eyesight dims. Life is varied and complex, the poem says. Don’t look the other way:We rejoice at the first bud in early springremember how a child grows day by daybut always ignore the winter wildernessneglect the frozen figure hunched beside the wallThe final poem in the present selection is ‘Key’ by Li Zhiyong. This poem has a pleasing air of mystery about it and an important message. The speaker advises us not to confuse empty symbols of wealth, power or status with that which is real and useful. ‘Keys are often little more than symbols / A bunch of keys will often sound like chains’. Instead we are advised to value the things we encounter every day. So the poem celebrates the ordinary, the useful and the intimate:These keys are still warm to the touch and glimmer slightly. The starry sky has given everything to make them shine.
