① The Miscast Champion
Michael Bentt
“Lots of people go through dark moments and they don’t come out. We have jails filled with people that don’t come out of those dark moments. Mike knows how to come out of those dark moments, and even go back in, and then come back out again, and still persevere, you know. And just be on the journey that…that’s life.”
“Miles Davis has a quote. ‘Sometimes it takes a long time to learn how to play like yourself.’ I’m always chasing, like, you know, ‘Who am I?’ And that’s okay.”
② The Jaws of Victory
“I would say to the people that are big football-club followers, get real. Learn a bit about football history. Cause it is part of football folklore now, that story.”
“We’ve survived. And when you survive, there’s always a chance of doing better next year. ”
③ Judgement
“As a black athlete, I think, we had to do just more than good. My job was to be…impeccable. Make sure that I was 100%, not just between 60 and 80. It wouldn’t work. It has to be 100% or more.”
“Sometimes it’s hard. Many days on the ice, you feel like crying, but winning a competition, it’s not the most important thing in life. You don’t have to wait for a medal to make your life different. A medal, it’s nice, but it’s not the most important. A medal is superficial. It’s not real. If you give 100%, and you know there was no other way, you did the best, well, feel good about it. Feel positive, and move on, and in the next competition, it will be better. So try to be a good person, try to be a good athlete, or a good student, without trying to get a medal, because sometimes, it can destroy you and really upset you.. for life sometimes and it’s not good.”
④ Stone Cold
Pat Ryan
“Pat shifted the game to a new rule that made it more entertaining, more exciting, arguably more so than it was before. Love him or hate him, he became so good at something that it actually transformed the game itself.”
⑤ Lost in the Desert
“I realized that whatever I did, in that moment, it was so natural, innate in man.”
“After every finish line, there’s a starting line. This experience simply gave me the joy of living life.”
⑥ Aliy
“I learned a lot in a very negative way, that not every human being values life, in particular my life, and that there are people with bad intentions.”
“There is sadness in the world, and sometimes you get knocked down and … Yep, there’s a lot of that out there, and I wish there wasn’t. But there sure it is.”
“My problem was that I really believed that it was gonna happen again. You build up these scenarios of what you think’s gonna happen, and it’s… You get in this circle of what you think’s gonna happen. And you can’t necessarily get out of that loop. The more you think about it, the more you convince yourself and you back it up.”
“Winning is the goal in a race. I’ve always finished the race. I’m gonna finish the race. And I’m gonna do my best to win it. Will I be completely heartbroken and life-shattered if I don’t win? Well, I certainly hope not. Would it be phenomenal if I did? Oh, yeah! What I would like is to be able to show people that you can be a competitive dog musher, and a compassionate dog musher.”
⑦ Black Jack
“I’m at the bottom. I can’t go any further. So, I just keep doing what I do. I’m playing basketball.”
“So, in my park, I had some of my friends that were negative. I stayed away from those negative people. Because, what happens when you hang around negative people? Negative things happen when you surround yourself with negative people. What happens when you surround yourself with positive people? Positive things happen when you surround yourself with positive people.”
“Can you imagine waking up and doing your…It’s not even a job. Cause when you love what you’re doing, it’s not a job. And unfortunately, there’s a lot of miserable people out there that have to go to work and do a job that they don’t like. Not him. Not Jack.”
⑧ The 72nd Hole
“I think in golf, as in life, yes, you have winners. But not everybody is a winner every week.”
Life is full of ups and downs.
“I do believe that you really need to try to make the difference that you can make. Even if it’s very small, it doesn’t matter. Every small difference is positive. Uh, and this is exactly what I’m trying to do.”
“A society cannot make do with only talk about victory. We always say that we learn more from defeat than from victory. So, if we learn from defeat, we should pay a bit more attention to those who lose.”
