SCBS students have a number of wonderful activities. Let's follow their footsteps, and experience this time full of their harvest in the golden season together.

Achievements in teaching and learning

Good News

In the ‘2024 Shanghai Basic Education Young and Middle-aged Teachers’ Teaching Competition’, Ms Grace Zheng, a history teacher from SCBS, won the second prize in the middle school history subject competition with her excellent teaching ability and unique teaching perspective.

Jointly organised by the Shanghai Early Childhood and Primary School Teachers Award Foundation, the Shanghai Academic Committee for Research on Young Teachers' Education and Teaching and the Shanghai Institute of Teacher Education, the competition aims to improve the teaching standards of young and middle-aged teachers and to promote the development of basic education. Ms Zheng's excellent performance in this event reflects her personal teaching charisma and perfectly illustrates SCBS's academic expectation:to strive for academic excellence! Congratulations to Ms Zheng!

SCBS ‘Rain in Kunming’ Public Class

Recently, Ms Jing Huang, Head of  Mandarin, brought a vivid and insightful interpretation of the unit-based research on prose reading teaching strategies with her well-prepared public class - ‘Rain in Kunming’.

The public class kicked off with much anticipation, and the title of the activity, ‘Unit-based Research on Prose Reading Teaching Strategies,’ was an eye-catching revelation of the lesson's exploratory theme. For a bilingual school like SCBS, the goal of teaching is not only to impart knowledge, but also to enhance the students' literary literacy in the long term. Ms Jing Huang expects that through this class, students will not only consolidate the use of the prose reading pathway, but also allow learning to flow naturally in the classroom, planting seeds of hope for their future literary appreciation and aesthetic ability

Throughout the public class, Ms Jing Huang vividly demonstrated the practical application of unit-based prose reading teaching strategies with her subtle teaching design, fluent teaching progression and effective guidance to students. In the bilingual teaching environment of SCBS, this lesson is not only a transfer of knowledge, but also a journey of literary appreciation and aesthetics, which lights up the light of prose reading for the students, and also provides valuable teaching examples and reflections for other teachers.

As Ms Fangyi Xu, the leader of the Preparation Team of SCBS Middle School, said in her perceptions, ‘Ms Huang's lesson responded to students’ questions about the relationship between the content of the writing and the topic of the article in an ingenious and natural way. The free writing in the text is no longer the ‘word count’ or ‘off-topic’ content in the eyes of students, but the implicit expression of the author's emotion. Ms Huang cut from the surface, deep into the depths of the text, first combing the text, and then seizing the idle strokes to guide the students to think freely, broadening the boundaries of students' thinking, so that students really understand the true meaning of the prose “form scattered and God gathered”, so that they have a deeper understanding of the essence of the prose. Free writing plays a vital role in the expression of the main idea of the article and the shaping of the character. This makes us realise that we should not neglect free writing, but seize it as a breakthrough in reading prose and lead students to achieve deep learning.’

This public class by Ms Jing Huang not only opened a new door to the world of prose for her students, but also provided a valuable example and inspiration for SCBS Mandarin teaching. It inspired all teachers to keep exploring and innovating on the journey of prose reading teaching, to help students explore in the sea of literature and gain more wisdom and growth with more subtle teaching design and more dynamic teaching methods.

7th Sinan Fantasy Day

SCBS participated in the '7th Sinan Fantasy Day' at the Sinan Mansion. This is also the 6th time that our school participated in the annual Sinan Fantasy Day. Ms Shawn Chen, the Head of Moral Education, received the trophy of ‘The 7th Sinan Fantasy Day Caring Organisation’ on behalf of the school. On behalf of the school, the young reporter from the Junior Daily, Zhiyuan Lv, took part in the charity sale and performance, and sent a report on her experience.

In this event, our charity stalls were divided into four main sections, representing each of our four Houses. The first section was DIY handmade hand-painted lacquer fans and graffiti; the second section was the cultural and creative works of the Houses created by the students themselves, which embodied their creativity, imagination, and understanding of cultural inheritance and innovation, and condensed their efforts from design to production; the third section was the punch-card stamping activity highlighting the characteristics of the school, and the fourth section was the interactive game area. The students put their beautiful works made on site into the charity sale as well, fully demonstrating the innovation and practical ability of SCBS students.

On the day of the event, student volunteers proactively introduced the items for sale, and all student volunteers worked together to dedicate themselves to the charity. On that day, our students not only hosted the event, but also the children of the Pop Music Club presented ‘Melodies’. The members gave their best efforts and supported each other, and their wonderful performance won the applause of the audience, adding vitality to the charity sale. Our school also passed on a message of love through this event, in which a total of RMB 2,544 yuan was raised, all of which has been donated to the Shanghai Charity Foundation. This is an activity full of ‘love’, allowing students to learn and grow in practice.

8-hour Fire Safety Training for Middle School Students

This month, SCBS G7 teachers and students went to the Luwan Fire Brigade of the Shanghai Fire Brigade with great anticipation and enthusiasm to start a meaningful ‘8-hour Fire Safety Training for Middle School Students’. The aim of this activity was to enhance the students' awareness of fire safety, improve their ability to deal with fire and other emergencies, cultivate their sense of social responsibility and the spirit of teamwork, and let the knowledge of fire safety really enter their lives and become a powerful weapon for them to protect their lives and safety.

Firefighters gave students a detailed explanation of the use of firefighting equipment and fire hose connection methods and spraying techniques, and then learnt to operate in groups, work together, quickly unfolded the water belt, connecting, open the valve of the water lance, a strong stream of water gushing out. Students in the operation process, deeply appreciate the importance of teamwork, only each person's respective duties, close co-operation, in order to efficiently complete the task.

International Exchange and

Home-School Communication

Guests from the International Division of

the Tasmanian Department of Education

and Hobart College visited SCBS

Mr Warwick Clark, Associate Director, Tasmanian Government Education and Training International (GETI), Dr Elizabeth Robinson, Principal of Hobart College and Ms Majorie Morgan, Vice Principal of Hobart College, recently visited SCBS.

Dr Paul Silverwood, Executive Principal, Ms Pan, Branch Secretary of the Communist Party of China / Chinese Executive Principal, and Dr Wendy King, Head of  Secondary Academic, warmly received the guests. During the visit to the campus, the guests gained an in-depth understanding of the school's philosophy, educational achievements and international vision of education.

Dr Silverwood extended a warm welcome to the guests at the ensuing seminar and introduced them to the basic educational situation of bilingual schools in Shanghai. Mr Clark said that the Tasmanian Government attaches great importance to educational exchanges with Shanghai and hoped that this visit would further consolidate the educational ties between the two sides and enhance the global perspective.

The guests had cordial exchanges with the student representatives. The student representatives also discussed with the guests on student development, educational resources and educational features, especially outdoor education. At the end of the visit, several student representatives presented gifts to the guests and took group photos to leave precious memories.

The XSphere, as the youth information window of Shanghai Education Channel, has witnessed the active performance of SCBS students in the media field. During this visit, our student reporter Zelin Wang gave full play to her professionalism and conducted in-depth interviews with the visiting guests, showing the style of SCBS students.

Parent-Tutor Meeting in Middle School

SCBS Middle School recently held Parent-Tutor Meetings, aiming to strengthen home-school communication. Unlike in the past, the meeting was divided into grades, with each grade arranging a meeting for all parents, a collective parent meeting for the tutor class, and a one-on-one parent interview.

The Parents' Meeting for all grades provided a platform for parents to have a comprehensive understanding of the school's education philosophy, teaching and learning programmes and the overall situation of students. At the meetings, school leaders and Heads of each Grade introduced the school's educational policy, curriculum, students' learning progress and the various supports and resources provided by the school for students. Through this information, parents were able to better understand the school's educational objectives and maintain a consistent educational direction with the school.

Tutor class parent meetings focus on the specifics of each class. Tutors give a detailed introduction to the classroom atmosphere, students' learning, behaviour and class activities. This type of group communication allows parents to have an objective and three-dimensional understanding of their child's learning and life in the class, and also promotes communication and cooperation among parents.

One-on-one parent interviews were an important part of the meeting. Tutors had an in-depth communication with each parent to understand the students‘ learning and living situation in the home environment, and listen to the parents’ views and suggestions. Through this personalised communication, the tutors were able to better understand the needs and characteristics of the students and provide them with more targeted guidance and support. At the same time, parents are also able to gain a deeper understanding of their children's learning and developmental needs, and work with the tutors to develop personalised education plans.

Parent-Tutor Meeting in High School

The SCBS High School One-to-One Tutor Parent Meetings were also held. During the exchanges, the tutors first shared in detail the students' academic performance in school. They took out the carefully compiled analyses of homework completion and the trend of performance in stage exams, etc., and presented to parents the students' situation in each subject with visual data and concrete examples.

At the same time, the tutors were also concerned about the students' behavioural habits and psychological state. They discussed with parents the student's campus life, such as the mode of getting along with classmates, the motivation to participate in campus activities, and the way of coping when facing academic pressure.

Parents also took an active part in the exchanges by telling the tutors how their children behave at home. This first-hand information from the family provides an important supplement to the tutor's comprehensive understanding of the student, enabling the tutor to grasp the student's developmental background and personality traits from a more macro perspective. Based on the full sharing of information between the two sides, tutors and parents opened up the discussion of co-education strategies. For students‘ academic improvement, they will formulate personalised learning plans based on students’ subject strengths.

In terms of students' comprehensive development, both sides discussed how to give more support to students in school club activities and social practices according to their interests and strengths, and help them explore their potentials and broaden their horizons. For students‘ psychological growth, tutors and parents jointly agreed to pay attention to the signals of students’ emotional changes, provide timely care and guidance, and help students build up a positive and optimistic mindset to cope with various challenges in high school.

The aim of this High School One-to-One Tutor Parent Meeting is to ensure that every SCBS student can realise his/her dreams under the joint care of the family and the school through meticulous communication and collaboration between the tutors and the parents.
