Abstracts
The "Power of Walking" is a specialised project of social practice for students of SCBS. Since 2021, under the leadership of the party branch of SCBS, the students have former visiting teams by house groups to experience the charm of Shanghai, and trace the city's cultural heritage, historical lineage and elegance of the times.
"The Power of Walking"
4th Season Student Lecture Awards
In the 4th season of SCBS' "The Power of Walking", teachers and students walked, learnt and grew together. The school provided a vibrant and inspiring learning platform for the students. In this season, the students' practical project-based learning was further promoted, and they stepped out of the traditional classroom into the society and the museum classroom to participate in various practical activities, thus realising the students' role change from knowledge receivers to knowledge explorers.
It is worth mentioning that, unlike the previous seasons when only house groups were involved, this season's activity has broadened the dimension of participation, added individual groups, and even innovatively introduced teacher-student co-operation in individual groups, which has given the activity of "The Power of Walking" a richer connotation. The participation of teachers and students in this activity has been greatly enhanced, eight groups of forty-seven students from four houses and eight teachers went into the museum, and they presented the results of their explorations in the form of speeches, which brought a cultural feast for teachers and students, and demonstrated the vitality and results of their academic explorations. Eight students from the four grades of the Middle School stood on the speaker's platform and shared the museum in their hearts, their unique research perspectives and insights. All the other students from the Middle School also actively participated in the sharing and judging sessions of this season's activities, which truly realised the participation of all people and the interaction between teachers and students.
In addition, this season's activities are innovative in the form and combination of lectures. The event introduced a variety of forms such as lecture videos filmed and produced by the students themselves, and on-site participation and interaction between teachers and studentsand the audience, making the lectures richer. This innovation not only enhanced the attractiveness of the lectures, but also allowed students to have a brand new experience in a diversified learning environment. At the same time, teachers and students participate in the walking programme together, so that the educational activities are no longer a one-way transmission of knowledge by the teacher, but a two-way interactive exploration and growth. In this atmosphere, students' motivation is fully mobilised and their potentials can be tapped, thus realising common progress both individually and collectively.
Party teachers and students visited the "Starry China - San Xing Dui - Jin Sha Ancient Shu Civilisation Exhibition" in the East Hall of the Shanghai Museum
During the activity, party teachers and students visited the "Starry China - San Xing Dui - Jin Sha Ancient Shu Civilisation Exhibition" in the East Hall of the Shanghai Museum. Teachers and students went into the museum together to experience the charm of the ancient Shu civilisation. In addition, the setting of the teacher-student cooperation field enabled teachers and students to have equal dialogue and joint exploration, breaking the traditional teaching mode and injecting new vitality into the teacher-student relationship.
Among them, the joint sharing of Mrs. Grace Zheng and Darren Zhang on "Starry China - San Xing Dui - Jin Sha Ancient Shu Civilisation Exhibition" in the East Hall of the Shanghai Museum was memorable and brought us a unique knowledge feast. The two speakers deeply analysed the Ancient Shu Civilisation from different perspectives, demonstrating the academic underpinnings behind the power of walking.

During the sharing process, Mrs. Zheng and Darren Zhang gave an in-depth interpretation of the exhibition from different perspectives. With her rich academic knowledge and vivid expression, Mrs. Zheng gave the audience a more comprehensive understanding of the ancient Shu civilisation; with her rigorous historical attitude, she analysed the historical status of the ancient Shu civilisation, which gave teachers and students in the audience a deeper understanding of this mysterious civilisation; while Darren Zhang, with his keen observation and love for geography and history and culture, discovered many details in the exhibition, which presented a different world of ancient Shu; and from the perspective of combining philosophy and history, he revealed the spirit of the ancient Shu civilisation, which triggered our thinking about the development of human civilisation. This sharing not only demonstrated the academic collision between teachers and students, but also vividly embodied the results of practical project-based learning.
Taking historical time as the axis and the documentary film "Seeing San Xing Dui Again" as the entry point, Mrs. Zheng combined scientific knowledge, archaeological technology and historical knowledge. From the discovery of the San Xing Dui site, the process of archaeological excavation, to the amazing debut of San Xing Dui cultural relics, she presented us with a picture scroll of ancient Shu civilisation. Her unique insights and novel perspectives made the ancient Shu civilisation no longer a distant past, but a living history teaching material. In the course of her presentation, Mrs. Zheng quoted poems such as Li Bai's "The Road to Shu", which vividly explained the close connection between the ancient Shu civilisation and the Chinese civilisation. Mrs. Zheng also combined the SCBS' "Harmony, Trust and Decency" and named the newly excavated artefacts at San Xing Dui in the picture below after "the harmony of heaven, the trustworthiness of man, and the righteousness of the great road".

Darren Zhang, on the other hand, interpreted the artefacts of San Xing Dui in detail from the cultural connotation. He combined his exploratory research in history and geographical knowledge, combining the ancient terrain and geographical location of San Xing Dui with artefacts such as the bronze god tree and the bronze big mask, revealing the ancient Shu people's reverence for the universe, nature and life. His views are profound and unique, which is refreshing. His use of the phrase "pleasant climate, peaceful and stable terrain, and people living in peace" to illustrate the cosmology of the ancient Shu civilisation is a thought-provoking statement.

This shows us that behind the power of walking, SCBS teachers and students respect and pass on the multiculturalism. As Mrs. Zheng said, "Ancient Shu civilisation is a treasure of Chinese civilisation, which we should feel and pass on with our hearts. As the ancient Shu civilisation conveys the "power of walking", we should continue to learn from the wisdom of our predecessors in the process of exploring the history in order to better walk towards the future."Darren Zhang emphasised: "To understand the ancient Shu civilisation, we should not only pay attention to its material culture, but also explore its connotations, so as to learn from it and inspire the future."
After the presentations, the teams from each house also carefully compiled exhibition boards to systematically organise and display all the presentations, deepening our understanding and exploration of knowledge.

Most Creative Award
The most creative work was the filming of Shanghai Guang Fu Lin Memorial Hall by Jiahuan He, who won the Most Creative Award for his ingenious filming content. This work not only shows the historical heritage of the memorial hall from a unique perspective, but also explores the humanistic spirit contained in it, which is breathtaking.
Please click on the video below to see the Shanghai Guang Fu Lin Memorial Hall, which was filmed and explained by Jiahuan He.
In the video, he cleverly used the language of the camera to integrate the architecture, cultural relics and natural landscape of the Guang Fu Lin Memorial Hall, which made people feel as if they had travelled through time and space to appreciate the flavour of a thousand years of culture. It shows the "power of walking" and makes teachers and students realise that in the fast-paced modern society, we need to slow down our steps to feel those historical marks that have been dusted off by the years and to explore those humanistic spirits that have been forgotten by time.
03
Most Popular Award
A trip to the Shanghai Bund History Museum by SCBS Mandela House Team 2 was not just a simple visit, but a profound historical and cultural experience. Entering this museum, which carries a century of Shanghai's history, the students experienced first-hand the city's rich historical heritage and unique cultural charms.

Team 2 on a trip to the Shanghai Bund History Museum
On this walk, the team also visited the "City Memory" exhibition area in the museum. There are many old objects donated by Shanghai citizens, such as old bicycles, black and white TVs, enamel bowls and so on. These objects have witnessed the changes in the lives of Shanghai citizens, and made the students feel the warmth and emotion in the development of the city.
Strolling in the Shanghai Bund History Museum, one piece of precious cultural relics and one vivid picture brought the students into the long and magnificent history. Here, they not only learnt about the origin, development and changes of the Bund's architecture, but also deeply felt the openness, tolerance and innovative vitality of Shanghai as an international metropolis.

Special Award
Foreign teachers Ms. Jie Yang and Ms. Weiyi He
received the "Special Award".
The 4th season of SCBS' "The Power of Walking" demonstrated a unique educational activity for all teachers and students with its unique perspective and novel form. It not only broadened the students' knowledge horizons, but also cultivated their team spirit and national sentiment in the cooperation between teachers and students. This activity is undoubtedly an innovation to the traditional education mode and a deep interpretation of the theme of "The Power of Walking". Our school looks forward to leading more teachers and students to gain knowledge and grow together through this kind of educational practice activities.
Many students said that walking in the museum taught them to experience culture in life and learn wisdom in society. It is worth mentioning that in SCBS, the word "walking" has a profound meaning. Walking is not only a kind of physical practice, but also a kind of spiritual enlightenment. During the walk, students felt the weight of Chinese civilisation, experienced the responsibility of cultural inheritance, and more deeply understood the important role of museum education in cultural inheritance. Let's look forward to the next season of "The Power of Walking"!
