Introduction
May is full of challenges and opportunities, SCBS students had a colourful academic life. Let's review this wonderful time together and share their growing moments.
Diverse Campus Activities
Middle School

Battle of the Books
SCBS students are no strangers to the "Battle of the Books". This is the fourth consecutive year that the middle school has organised this reading event. This month, the annual "Battle of the Books" event was back, and this year's list of books was a special one, featuring the winners of the Panda Book Awards for Middle Schools for the 2023-2024 school year.
From the beginning of the Year to the International Book Day, nearly 100 students in middle school read these ten novels of different genres in their reading lessons and after-school hours. From the initial "Speed Profile" activity to pick the books, to the "Book Sharing Club" after reading. Each student also wrote one or two "questionnaires" about the story as they read and wrote to test other students who read the same book.
In the end, these thick stacks of "questionnaires" were transformed into an exciting quiz game in the reading class, using online software to test the students' comprehension of the story and their carefulness in reading and note-taking amidst laughter. The ten best "players" also played an online PK game in mid-May with students from several other schools that also organised "Battle of the Books", and we believe that this unique literary battle must have left a pleasant reading memory in every participant's mind!
The 4th season of "The Power of Walking"
"The Power of Walking" is a specialised project of social practice for students of SCBS. Since 2021, under the leadership of the party branch of SCBS, SCBS students have formed visiting teams based on their houses to experience the charm of Shanghai, and to trace the city's cultural heritage, historical lineage and elegance of the times.
In April this year, we welcomed the 4th season of "The Power of Walking" - "Walking through the museums in Shanghai, continuing the Chinese cultural lineage". Students spent their academic holidays in museums, exploring the treasures of Chinese civilisation.
Throughout May, eight groups of students from four houses went deep into the museum, integrating their observations and feelings into their presentations of the museum's exhibitions and activities, presenting teachers and students with a rich cultural scroll that demonstrates the heritage and development of Chinese history and culture.
Pictures show some of the houses groups and individuals
In addition to the Houses groups presentations, we also added an individual presentation session for the first time. Eight students from the four grades of the Middle School shared their thoughts about the museum and conveyed their insights and feelings in a unique way! After the presentations, the houses groups also elaborately made exhibition boards to sort out and summarise the contents of the museum, so that we could learn and understand more deeply.

The winners of the Houses and Individual "Most Popular" awards will be voted on and recognised for their hard work and performance. The results will be announced at a later date, so stay tuned!
"Museum Wonder Day" 1st June Charity Bazaar
SCBS has always been unique in its annual Children's Day, and this year it even organised a charity bazaar with the theme of "Museum Wonder Day". On the occasion of this year's Children's Day, teachers and students gathered on campus and combined the theme of "The Power of Walking" with the culture of the museum, presenting a feast of knowledge and love with 11 unique exhibits.
This year's bazaar is not only a simple charity sale, but also an in-depth cultural experience. In SCBS, the museum is no longer just a place to store historical relics, but has become a lively classroom to pass on culture and inspire thinking. The uniqueness of this event lies in the clever integration of museum elements into the bazaar, allowing participants to experience the theme of the fourth season of the "The Power of Walking".
Art comes from life and is higher than life. Students in the art exhibition area made mosaic coasters and vases with their own hands, not only exercising their hands-on skills, but also appreciating the unique charm of art in the process of creation. In this process, the children integrated the little elements of life into art creation, which not only inherited the excellent traditional Chinese culture, but also inspired their pursuit of beauty. In the word exhibition area, the idiom solitaire and spelling activities were a deep exploration of Chinese language and writing.
The Wisdom Puzzle Ball, Hole Blocks and Dominoes in the Technology Exhibition Area demonstrated the perfect combination of technology and art. In these activities, students not only experienced the fun brought by science and technology, but also fully unleashed their imagination and cultivated the spirit of innovation and teamwork.
In the charity sale area for each grade, students gave full play to their creativity and enthusiasm by carefully arranging a variety of items made by their own hands, attracting many teachers and students to come and buy. The Museum Gift Shop, on the other hand, integrated school peripherals and cultural and creative products into the charity sale, allowing students to make a contribution to the cause of love while purchasing their favourite items. The party and group teachers in the Kindness Service Area, moreover, conveyed love with practical actions and added colour to the activity.
The "Museum Wonder Day" 1st June Charity Bazaar not only allowed students to experience the heritage of Chinese culture, but also let them learn to care for others and pass on love in practice. This is undoubtedly a cultural journey with depth and unique insights, leaving an unforgettable chapter in the campus life of SCBS students. May all SCBS students continue to measure the world with their feet, feel culture with their hearts, and write their own wonderful life in the future.
14th Youth Camp
Youth is a symbol of ideal, courage and will. Every year, the "14th Youth Camp" is not only a celebration of the 14th birthday for the students of G8, but also a baptism of youth. They are in their youthful years, gathered together to spend this special day, which means that they have grown from a tender child to a teenager full of dreams.
During the celebration of the SCBS G8 students' "14th Youth Camp", the student Zhi'an Zhuang's father said, "Let us cherish every love and care with a grateful heart. Study hard and move forward bravely for the expectations of our families, the hard work of our teachers, the glory of the school and the progress of our society."
During the activity, each student's parents conveyed their love and expectation for their children through letters, a warm way that made the students feel the warmth of the family and at the same time clearer about their responsibilities and missions. The love and expectation of parents are the important guidance for children on the road of growth.
Several tutors expressed their expectations and blessings for the students, and their words were like a lighthouse, illuminating the students' way forward.
On this special day, G8 students also wrote their expectations and encouragement to themselves one year later through letters. This self-motivation taught them to plan for the future and work hard for their life goals. The students planted the seeds of their dreams at the beginning of their youth, just waiting for their future hard work and fruitful harvest.
And in the team activity sessions of the 14th Youth Camp - Bravehearts' Road and Dragon Boat Racing, students united and overcame difficulties, showing the vigour and vitality of youth. These activities not only exercised their will and physical ability, but also made them understand the importance of teamwork. In teamwork, students grow and progress together, and work hard to realise their dreams.
Time is passing, and youth is shining.
Dreams blossom in the heart
and wisdom shines in the mind.
Hope all SCBS students,
with knowledge as theirwings.
Let the song of youth be sung through the years.

2024 SCBS Table Tennis Carnival
Table tennis is known as the "national sport" in China, not only because of its success in the world arena, but also because of the deep cultural connotation of this sport. In the 2024 SCBS Table Tennis Carnival, students participated actively and enthusiastically, fully demonstrating the unique value of table tennis in fostering the spirit of unity, cooperation and hard work.
At the site, a table tennis expert met a powerful opponent in the match and remained calm and confident despite the enormous pressure he faced. After the match, he said of his mindset during the match, "Table tennis has taught me how to stay calm in difficult situations and face challenges." This is exactly the kernel of spirit that the SCBS Table Tennis Carnival wanted to convey to the students.
Home-School Communication for Growth
High School Parent and Tutor Meeting
SCBS has always understood that home and school are the two wings of educating children, and only when both sides work together can children fly higher and farther. In the recent SCBS High School Parent Tutor Meeting, the concept of home-school communication was deeply interpreted. Through this platform, parents and tutors discussed how to build a solid bridge between home education and school education in order to promote the all-round development of students.
A parent shared his experience in education: "I was puzzled by the fact that my child's academic performance never improved, and then after communicating with my tutor, I realised that the problem lay in home education. I neglected to communicate with my child and didn't understand his performance at school. With the tutor's advice, I began to pay attention to my child's academic life and actively participate in home-school communication, and my child's grades gradually improved and his personality became more cheerful."
The education of children is not only the responsibility of school teachers, but also the responsibility of family education. Only when families and schools work hand in hand can we provide the strongest support for children's growth. In order to make home-school communication a reality, SCBS High School has launched a series of initiatives, such as organising regular parent-tutor meetings, setting up parent classes, and carrying out various activities. These initiatives aim to enhance parents' understanding of school education and promote communication and cooperation between home and school.
Middle School Parent and Subject Teacher Meeting
SCBS Middle School Parents and Subject Teachers' Meeting is not only a simple meeting, but also a bridge of communication between students, parents and teachers. By communicating with the teachers, parents can have a more comprehensive understanding of their children's subject strengths and weaknesses. This makes home education more targeted and helps parents to be more focused when counselling their children. For example, a parent lamented after the meeting, "I always thought my child was good at English, but through communication with the teacher, I realised that he still has a lot of room for improvement in grammar."
This meeting not only builds a good platform for home-school communication, but also promotes the personalised development of students. During the meeting, teachers provided parents with personalised educational advice on the characteristics of each student. This tailor-made approach made parents realise that every child is unique and their potential needs to be respected and explored. We believe that with the joint efforts of the school and home, students can grow up in SCBS and realise their aspirations in life.
