SCBS

SCBS

SCBS

SCBS

SCBS

In SCBS Primary School, children complete their daily curriculum studies with a rich variety of integrated practical activities, which are carried out in the form of thematic project-based learning in the integration of Chinese and Western cultures. These activities take the form of theme-based project-based learning, such as keynote speeches, storytelling, poetry recitation, drama observation or performance, and conversations with authors (translators). In this issue, we will take you to observe a set of English Magic Fairy Tale Drama in school and a dialogue with the winning authors of the 3rd Chen Bochui Children's Literature Award Ceremony.

British Magic Fairy Tale Theatre Comes to SCBS

SCBS

On 19th November, the British English magic fairy tale play ‘Adventures in the Land of Giants’ came to SCBS Campus, bringing an all-English audio-visual feast to the students. This is another wonderful move after the cooperation with 101 Art Theatre of Shanghai International Art Festival last year, and it is the first time that the fairy tale theatre has been performed exclusively on campus, and the first stop is SCBS. The children had the opportunity to have a close encounter with the artist and experience the charm of English fairy tale theatre on campus. After the performance, the children were interviewed by Shanghai TV's ‘Haha Children's’ channel, please click on the video above to see the interview by the ‘News Classmates’ programme team below.

Full English Drama Performance: Native Language Environment, Improvement of English Listening and Speaking Skills

For the children, this is not just a spectacular performance, but also an immersive English learning journey. They were immersed in an all-English environment, a native English-like environment: both the actors' vivid dialogue and the emotional exchanges between the different characters they portrayed were all in the medium of English. This approach breaks the confines of traditional classroom English learning and opens up a whole new learning journey for the children. By listening to and understanding the English expressions in the play, the children's listening and comprehension skills are honed. At the same time, the infectious performances and clear pronunciation of the actors provide children with quality examples of oral imitation.

2

Bilingual reading combined with theatre performances: deeper understanding of the play and enhanced learning

The event skilfully combined reading and theatre viewing to provide a richer and deeper experience for the children. Before watching the magical play ‘Adventures in the Land of Giants’, the children had already read the bilingual version of the fairy tale ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’. When they sat in the audience, the words in the book were transformed into a scene on the stage, and the familiar characters and plots were vividly displayed in front of their eyes. They were able to quickly understand the development and twists of the plot and capture the emotions embedded in every detail.

This was the first time that the fairy tale play entered SCBS' campus for a special performance, and the children had the opportunity to experience the charm of professional theatre performances up close: the whole play was performed by a single actor who played multiple roles, and the more than ten props were also creative. The process of watching the play is not only a process of learning English, but also a process of stimulating imagination and creativity.

The curtain is about to go up on the premiere of

the SCBS Drama Club's English play!

On Tuesday, 3rd December, the SCBS Drama Club will present its first official performance. The SCBS Drama Club's first performance will be the classic all-English play ‘The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse’. Adapted from the picture book and animated film of the same name, the play is a lively and entertaining way to help students understand the preciousness of friendship and the power of kindness.

The performance is directed by Mr Alex Atherton, G5 teacher from SCBS, and the students of the Drama Club will interpret vivid characters in English throughout the performance. Through drama, students can practise and develop their English skills in an all-round way. Integrating drama into English learning not only stimulates students' interest in English learning, but also helps them to better understand the cultural meanings of the scripts in the process of the performances, so let's look forward to this wonderful chapter of drama together.

Dialogue with award-winning authors,

reading interviews on diversified Chinese learning

SCBS also attaches importance to Mandarin learning. The Mandarin teaching and research team and the school library often organise reading activities to stimulate students‘ interest in reading, while various meetings with authors and translators are intended to improve the quality of students’ reading.

Recently, the awarding ceremony of the 3rd Chen Bochui Children's Literature Award Ceremony was held on campus. Teachers and students of SCBS had the opportunity to be part of the panel of judges for the ceremony. Teachers from the school's party committee took the children to read the winning works on a priority basis. During the award ceremony, a high-quality dialogue was held between representatives of SCBS teachers and students and Blue Key, the author of ‘The Horse on the Wall’, which won the prize for the best piece of work in the ceremony.

Some Curiosities and Lots of Thoughts

--What children and teachers want to say to the author

SCBS

4B Xinhe Liu:

I rather like the scene where Xiaohai's grandfather uses a narwhal's needle and moonlight's thread to mend the whirlpool, and I like the scene where the giants come over the mountain and trek to find the other giants.  I would like to know where the author got all this inspiration from?

4C Kiquan Xue:

I think the bubble-spitting car is a small fish. I want big imagination too!

5B William Wu:

In the author's writing, why can't the older brother see those things that the younger brother can see?

5C Josephine WANG:

When I read the part where the grandfather fights the whirlpool to save Hai, my heart raced and I had the feeling that I was going to suffocate. May I ask how you wrote such blood-boiling details, did you experience it yourself? Did you experience it? Or did you imagine it? Can you give us a little advice on writing

4Q Austin QIU:

Why is your pen name ‘Blue Key’?

Ms Janet Cai, Principal of SCBS Primary School:

Children are indeed very imaginative and have a lot of wild ideas of their own, but when it comes to expression, they are sometimes unable to distinguish between reality and fantasy, and there may be situations where reality and fantasy are mixed together. Do you have any advice for children on what techniques and ways we should use to accurately express what we see and what is in our hearts

Comments Off on Inspiration, Imagination, and Love

 - Author's Answers

About the inspiration for 'The Horse on the Wall':

The book consists of a dozen or so short stories that are relatively independent, but have a main thread that serves as a clue to the whole story.

In fact, this story was partly inspired by my life experiences as a child and the everyday life that my two daughters lived with me. In this story, reality and fantasy are intertwined, and a lot of the reality in the story has actually happened, and is found in daily life. In other words, our imagination should have a ‘root’, and this ‘root’ is the soil of our life.

About reality and imagination in the eyes of a child:

A good way to do this is to let the child write or draw, to transfer the emotions to words or pictures, and in this way express their state of mind at the moment, and at the same time, this will become a great treasure of the child's childhood years. I was such a child when I was young, and I fantasised for a long time, and I would write or draw my thoughts in little books. Looking back on my creations at that time, I now feel that they are the nutrient pool for me to embark on the road of creating children's literature after I have my own children. Therefore, we should treasure every imagination in childhood, which is a treasure and very valuable.

About why some of the episodes are portrayed so realistically:

There are some things that even if they never really happened, when writing, even if the words in the pen are imaginary, our emotions, our love has to be genuine. The story may be fictional, but the love must be genuine. We should write in the same way, to penetrate the real emotion into your words, read more and write more, you can also write better than me, the future can be expected.

On how to take advantage of fleeting inspiration:

Inspiration is something that every writer cherishes, it doesn't come in the usual way, it doesn't come without a trace, it doesn't tell me ‘I'm going to come to you tonight’. Inspiration doesn't just happen to come to me when I'm writing, so I make a habit of recording it when it does, and I have a lot of pieces of it on my mobile phone. If you have inspiration don't let it go, keep reinforcing it, training it, memorising it, and then your inspiration will come more and more easily.

About the pen name ‘Blue Key’:

I like the colour blue, and I thought the image of a key was good, and if my story could open the reader's heart like a key, it would be a very good gift, so I came up with this ‘pen name’, which I have used until now.

On how imagination can be used and explored:

Imagination is the ladder that propels us to progress as human beings. Imagination serves so many purposes that if a person has no imagination, he will live a very miserable life. I am sure that as we sit in this place, we must be thinking of something in our mind, and this is the process we are going through with the world. Imagination is an innate ability and we use it all the time, that is my opinion.

SCBS Primary School has always been committed to bilingual and bicultural learning, through a series of exciting and in-depth activities, to build a bridge for children to learn through interdisciplinary projects. Whether it is the immersive language and art experience brought about by the English Magic Fairy Tale Drama or the in-depth dialogue and exchange with literary author, all of these activities skillfully integrate language learning, cultural understanding and art appreciation. The school provides children with a bigger stage and a better platform for growth, and links them to a wealth of educational resources to help them grow into outstanding talents with international perspectives, physical and mental health, as well as moral and aptitude, and we look forward to the children exploring their own infinite splendour in the future!
