SCBS is a K-12 school. For a few years now, students who were studying in SCBS Primary School were promoted to the Middle School. The consistent system of bridging primary school and middle school, allows the primary school students got better adapted to their studies in middle school.

What similarities did they find from SCBS Primary School to Middle School? What are some of the more ‘advanced’ changes in their studies? We invited SCBS G6 students Annie Huang and Derek Liu to share their tips on how they progressed from SCBS Primary School to SCBS Middle School.

Preparation from Primary School

to Middle School Student

An immersive experience to warm up for middle school

When I stepped into the SCBS Middle School, I was no stranger to it. It was because in G5, we would come to the Middle School for the Primary School Bridging Programme to experience middle school life in an immersive way. We would walk into the middle school classroom to get an early taste of middle school life; and the higher grade students in the Middle School would teach us valuable tips on how to progress from primary to middle school. After this programme, I can easily cope with the class schedule and time management of the middle school. In fact, since G3, I have felt that our teachers have been treating us more and more like adults, encouraging us to think more and express more, and in the process of growing up in the SCBS Primary School, we have also developed the good habits of independent and exploratory learning that are essential for middle school students, which makes it easy for us to achieve a seamless transition from primary school to middle school.

Last year, as G5 graduates of SCBS Primary School, we had a very interesting ‘Graduation Season Programme’ since the second semester of G5. The theme of the programme was ‘Interdisciplinary Walking Writing - Career’, in which the teacher led us to explore ‘disappearing wetlands’, experience ‘standing between history and the future’ of ancient architecture, and discover ‘Shikumen houses in the process of urbanisation’, so that we could prepare for the learning skills required for middle school in advance in the course of interdisciplinary learning. In the Graduation Season Programme, we needed to prepare ourselves for the learning skills required in middle school through interdisciplinary learning. In the graduation season course, we had to plan and design our own graduation ceremony, and students from different Houses worked together to create a graduation season logo and graduation gifts. This series of classes suddenly made me feel like I had grown from a small child being taken care of to a small adult. Teachers didn't just tell us what to do, but inspired us to think about how to do it, and paid more attention to cultivating our way of thinking and teaching us how to learn. After the ‘Graduation Season Programme’, I am now more comfortable and confident in my middle school studies.

Many of the lessons and project-based learning in G5 were created by both primary and middle school teachers. The Primary and Middle School Bridging Programme not only fostered my interest in learning and desire for a better life in middle school, but also gave me a clearer direction to work towards.

Self-management skills and good study habits helped me to move from primary school to middle school

Unique teaching style has made me a master of time planning

We each have our own timetable and we will not always be in our regular classrooms. During the short breaks between classes, we need to quickly prepare the school supplies needed for the next class according to our schedules and arrive at the exact classroom for the next class. As the representative of the Chinese class and English class, I not only had to manage my own time, but also had to collect homework and communicate with the teacher, so it was a race against time. As a result, I have learnt to use my time efficiently, organise tasks in a rational way, and practised my self-management and time-planning skills.

Active learning and good habits are the secret to my middle school success

The communication with teachers during the process of bridging primary and middle school helped me to develop good habits and methods for middle school learning in advance. When I entered middle school, I found that good study habits were the key to help me adapt to learning quickly. The pace of learning in middle school is much faster than in primary school, but I don't need to blindly brush the problems and memorise them, the teachers gave more initiative back to me, giving guidance and help with my learning methods, and their encouragement also prompted me to be more proactive in solving problems, which stimulated my motivation to learn, and unknowingly, with the right method and enough energy, enabled me to realised the real ‘in-roll’. Now I can take the initiative to find the teacher, actively reflect on, and continue to develop good study habits.

Stimulating empathy and finding interest

My favourite classes were the Chinese class and the International Art class. In the Chinese class, the teacher guided us to bring our emotions into the text to appreciate the characters' motives and reasons for doing what they did. This not only honed my empathy, but also enabled me to understand the content of the textbooks more intuitively, making the characters more three-dimensional and the textbooks less boring. The teacher respected each of our perspectives and ideas for understanding the text, allowing us to understand and feel the text more confidently and better. I enjoyed Art classes in primary school, and when I moved into middle school, I had no trouble communicating with my teacher based on the advantages of the bilingual environment I had in primary school. In class, I don't feel like I'm being forced to do something, and the learning atmosphere is relaxed and enjoyable.

My favourite classes are Maths and English. I am good at Maths and interested in equations and square root signs. In Maths class, our teachers can teach us evenly and in a more targeted manner to the areas we are each good at, allowing me to be able to learn and be challenged more deeply in the areas I am good at. Our English teacher will provide targeted teaching guidance to each of us based on our test scores and classroom performance, which makes me feel like I am absorbing knowledge more efficiently. I was in a bilingual environment in the Primary School and feel that I have more of a language advantage and am able to improve my English skills better in a class that suits my level, making my learning more efficient and fulfilling.

I've benefited from meeting the teachers of SCBS

I'm from Teresa House, and I'm in a class where my classmates come from different houses, but there's no obvious competition between us. On the contrary, we help each other to make progress together. For example, when I was preparing for the weekly test before, students from other houses would help me with Maths questions, while I would teach them how to write English essays.

The dual tutors understand and care about the dynamics of each and every one of us. I am shy but eager to take part in campus activities, and on Teachers' Day this year, thanks to the encouragement of my tutors, I bravely took on the role of facilitator, and worked with students from different grades to complete the task together. When I entered middle school, I found that revision became more systematic and detailed, and I was able to review all subjects in a more focused manner. My science teacher would lead us in systematic checking and revision of subject knowledge points, and would also teach us to make mind maps. This way of revision has enabled me to develop a good habit of using mind maps to sort out and review the knowledge points before the weekly tests of each subject.

Enjoy the Houses and show the diverse styles

I have met many like-minded people in my House and in club activities. There are many different kinds of clubs in the school, which can train our talents in various aspects. I love music, and although I am not very talented in singing, I was deeply touched by the words of the seniors who said, ‘No matter what your vocal qualifications are, as long as you love music, you can join the club’ during the club's recruitment. This made me feel that the campus environment was inclusive and respected the individual differences of each student. Therefore, I chose to join the Pop Music Club. The activities of the club have been very rewarding, not only fulfilling my love for music, but also allowing me to make many like-minded friends, improving my teamwork and self-confidence.

In order to balance my hobby with my studies, I have developed a set of my own time management methods. Every day after school, I would finish my homework and revision tasks, and then set aside some time to play the guitar. In this way, I can ensure the effectiveness of my studies and relax myself with music.

The clubs in the Middle School are varied and interesting, and are a great platform for sharing interests and hobbies. The clubs are full of students from different grades and houses who share the same hobbies. I have a lot of hobbies, such as drums, basketball, calligraphy and Chinese painting, etc., among which basketball is a hobby I have always insisted on. From primary school to middle school, basketball has accompanied me through many unforgettable times. I am also a member of the basketball club in primary school. On the court, I learnt to fight, persevere and team spirit. Basketball has enabled me to make great progress in physical fitness, and through basketball, it has also enabled me to make many like-minded friends.

In order to better balance my studies with my hobbies, I will take a walk around the campus during the afternoon recess to enjoy the beautiful scenery, and I will also play basketball with my classmates or go to the library to read and study to relax.
