At the recent 23rd Shanghai International Arts Festival, students from SCBS performed the original experimental children's theatre play ‘Ancient Ship’ as members of the China Shanghai International Arts Festival Youth Art Troupe. Before that, this ‘Ancient Ship’ had already travelled to the Edinburgh International Conference Centre in the United Kingdom for a performance. This time, it returned from the accolade and made its shining debut in the Shanghai International Arts Festival for its domestic premiere, where the fluent English dialogue, rich body language and emotions of the young actors and actresses led the audience to embark on a journey of fantasy and adventure.
China Shanghai International Arts Festival Youth Art Troupe has a total of twenty-three actors, including ten from SCBS, the youngest of them is only in G1. After just half a year of rehearsals, as well as the daily hard training of the students, the students can easily perform in the whole children's theatre with fluent English dialogue, this group of 10 students use their own all-English performances to send out China's voice to the world, vividly presenting China's history and culture, and leading everyone into the unique and magnificent oriental civilisation.

SCBS G5 student representative William Wu not only acted in the children's theatre production of the ‘Ancient Ship’ in the Tancheng role, but was also invited as a host; fluent in English he hosted the entire show. William Wu masted the complexity of English lines in the play, and demonstrated great flexibility as the host, switching between Chinese and English, fully demonstrating that SCBS students have a solid bilingual expression skills and all-round development of talents.
On the evening of 27th October, the annual China Shanghai International Arts Festival International Youth Arts Exhibition made its grand debut, and the SCBS Primary School dance team was invited to make a return appearance. Last year's dance ‘Youth's Ambition’ was well received as the closing performance. This year, the young performers, dressed in colourful traditional opera costumes with unique headdress designs, gave a wonderful rendition of the traditional dance ‘Girl in Chinese Opera’, which was also a great success.
Through the dance ‘Girl in Chinese Opera’, SCBS students demonstrated the unique charm of dancers. In the dance, the actors and actresses dressed in gorgeous traditional Chinese theatre costumes performed to the rhythm of the music and used vivid body language to express the lively, clever and agile qualities of the girls. Their light and airy dance moves like the wind, bringing a visual and spiritual feast to the International Arts Festival.
SCBS students grow up in a bilingual, bicultural arts environment. The school attaches great importance to arts and bilingual education. Art education can satisfy children's curiosity and develop their imagination. In SCBS, the arts are not just a subject, but also a pedagogy. The school is nourished by the arts, and endeavours to develop arts resources both inside and outside the school, and builds platforms, where arts learning and activities can be found everywhere. Through more language learning and more arts activities, children have opportunities to come into contact with and understand the culture including Chinese and World cultures), and have the ability to integrate across cultures.
