Introduction
In SCBS Primary School, both in-school and out-of-school activities are a splash of colour on the children's path of growth, enriching their study life as well as cultivating their comprehensive qualities. Let's take a look back at the children's wonderful moments together!
Diverse Campus Activities
School Poetry Writing Competition
for the 2023 academic year
Clothing can be designed.
Architecture can be designed.
Animated scenes, images ...... can all be designed.
So, can poetry be designed?
Of course it can.
Let's break the stereotype of poetry with our marvellous imagination.
Let's use our imagination to break the stereotype of poetry.
Let's use our imagination to break the stereotypes of poetry and make poetry come alive, to show the joy of life.
In the Chinese Poetry Writing Competition organised by SCBS Primary School, children interpreted their perception of life and pursuit of beauty with their innocent hearts and tender words. The competition was not only a literary competition, but also a platform for the children to develop their literary creativity. Through this platform, the children brought their imagination into play and demonstrated their language skills.
Poetry creation requires both a deep cultural heritage as a support, and poetry creation is also the excavation and expression of the world of the mind. In the process of creating poetry, children not only need to use rich vocabulary and rhetorical techniques, but also mobilise their emotions and imagination. As Su Shi said, "A belly full of poetry and books makes one's heart grow fonder". Poetry can cultivate children's temperament and cultivation, and enhance their ability to perceive life. In the competition, some children used the local customs they had seen and heard during their travels as the theme, while others used the people and events around them as the starting point, showing their unique perspectives and profound thinking.
The children improved their literary skills through this competition, and were also able to learn from the works of the ancients, draw wisdom and inspire creativity. For example, one student wrote in her work, "The tears of broken flowers have been exhausted, and the wind has blown them all over the ground. Opening my eyes is still winter, that spring colour, a beautiful dream." This poem cleverly combines the imagery in classical poetry with modern life, presenting a novel way of expression.
"A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step." Through this competition, the children have taken a solid step on the road of poetry writing and laid a foundation for future literary creation.
G5 Graduation Exhibition "Four Seasons in My Eyes"
The G5 Graduation Exhibition of "Four Seasons in My Eyes" shone at K11 on the eve of 1st June, which was also the result of the students' interdisciplinary project learning on Intangible cultural heritage - 24 solar terms.
In this exhibition, students used the theme of "Four Seasons in My Eyes" to show their unique views on the 24 solar terms using various art forms, such as painting, calligraphy and handicrafts. The works were colourful, with both traditional cultural heritage and modern creativity. In a group of works on the theme of "Spring", students used painting, handmade paste and other techniques to cleverly incorporate the elements of spring, making people feel the vitality and energy of spring.
It is worth noting that the students also explained their works in fluent English to the guests at the event, and the project learning also introduced the teaching concept of interdisciplinary learning. On the basis of understanding the 24 solar terms, the students combined their knowledge of geography, biology, history and other multidisciplinary subjects to explore in depth the relationship between the solar terms and nature and human activities. This not only broadened the students' horizons, but also cultivated their innovative thinking.
A total of more than one hundred visitors on site watched the exhibition, and nearly two thousand netizens voted, and finally the four most popular works of this exhibition are shown in the picture below:
G5 Graduation Curriculum Series
"Interdisciplinary Walking Writing-Career" Activity
SCBS Primary School has a "Graduation Curriculum Series" since the second semester of G5, which has been developed by Primary and Middle School teachers, with the aim of enabling students to make a smoother transition to Middle School at the end of their Primary School Years.
This year's G5 graduates took part in one of the Graduation Curriculum Series, "Interdisciplinary Walking Writing-Career", which consisted of the following: "Disappearing Wetlands" by Museum Lecturer Mr. Jiabin Shi, "Standing Between History and the Future" by Senior Ancient Architect Mrs. Yanli Ding, and "Shikumen Houses in the Process of Urbanisation" by Poet Mr. Gang Gu. The duration of each thematic writing activity is usually one day. The children can see with their eyes, hear with their ears and feel with their hearts during the walks, giving them practical ways and means to choose materials and ideas individually, and helping them to train their minds to perceive the existence and significance of culture in their daily lives.
In the "Disappearing Wetland" activity, children went into the wetland to observe, feel and record this mysterious land. The children depicted the beauty of the wetland with their brushes and learnt about the gifts and warnings of nature with their hearts. Through their in-depth understanding of the wetland, they also created a series of writing walks with the theme of "Disappearing Wetland". They expressed their love for the ecological environment with poetic language and sincere emotions. One student even gave us a unique insight: we saw egrets and experienced the feeling of a line of egrets going up to the blue sky. Most wetlands are gone now, and most people don't appreciate how important they are. After the activity, the children said that human beings should respect nature, follow the laws of nature, and it is everyone's responsibility and obligation to protect the environment.
In the activity "Standing between History and the Future", children not only learnt about ancient architectural arts, poems and songs in the Fangta Garden, a place full of historical heritage; they also experienced the flow and change of time, and explored the intersection of modern technology and traditional culture. This enabled them to look beyond the framework of a single discipline and seek more comprehensive solutions when facing complex problems. Standing on the shoulders of history, they looked back to the past and marvelled at the wisdom and diligence of the ancients; at the same time, they were grounded in reality and looked forward to the future, full of expectations for the development of science and technology. This kind of experience across time and space makes them clearer about their goals and directions on the road of growth.
In the course "Shikumen Houses in the Process of Urbanisation", children will step out of the classroom and go into Shikumen to experience the historical heritage and cultural charms of these unique houses. The course covers a wide range of disciplines, including history, geography, literature and art, and guides the children to observe and reflect on the changes of Shikumen dwellings in the process of urbanisation from different perspectives. They went on field trips to Shikumen houses to learn about their architectural style, historical background and living environment; they recorded stories about Shikumen buildings and felt the changes of the times; and they carried out cross-disciplinary writing, so that they could incorporate what they had learnt into their works and record the history and current situation of Shikumen in writing.
In addition, a walking writing session was incorporated into the activity, allowing children to put their inner feelings into words while experiencing history and the future. They recorded their thoughts and shared their insights in writing. It is worth mentioning that during the activity, one child quoted an ancient poem, "Do not fear the floating clouds to cover your eyes, since you are at the highest level." This poem aptly expressed what they had learnt in this activity. In the face of the complexity of history and the future, children learnt to look at problems from a higher perspective and to understand the world with a broader vision.
Through this series of curricular activities, the G5 graduates enhanced their interdisciplinary learning abilities during the graduation season, not only preparing their knowledge and abilities for middle school, but also planting a love and respect for nature and traditional culture in their hearts and minds.
Independence Camp
Recently, the G4 children took an important step forward in their development when they travelled to the Sun Island Yumei Camp for a two-day and one-night activity called "First Steps of Young Adults - Independence Camp". Based on the theme of "Young Adults Become Independent", the year group carefully designed four programmes and activities, aiming to improve the children's self-care, self-learning, life skills and teamwork abilities.
On the first day, the children got their hands dirty in the carpentry workshop, honing their hands-on skills and developing patience and care. In the afternoon, Gaga Ball, Flag-football and Rock Climbing activities enabled them to learn co-operation in competition and understand that a team victory cannot be achieved without everyone's efforts.
At the dinner time, the children were guided by the camp staff to get the marshmallows on their own, giving and caring for each other, as if at this moment, they had already experienced the responsibility and bearing of the "little adults". When roasting marshmallows, the children not only tasted delicious food, but also learnt the basic skills of independent living.
The bonfire was the highlight of the event. The children sat around the bonfire and laughed. It was in this unrestrained atmosphere that the children showed their talents and personalities. They expressed their love for life and their vision for the future through singing, dancing and other forms.
On the second day, archery and commemorative bracelet making allowed the children to experience the charm of traditional culture, while dryland curling further tested their teamwork skills.
The children exuded endless warmth, gratitude and touching feelings during the letter writing session. With innocent strokes, they depicted their thoughts and gratitude to their families, which made people wonder: growing up, just in this moment.
The children left the shelter of their parents and spent two days with their buddies. Many children said that through this activity they learnt how to express themselves effectively in a team, listen to and understand others' points of view, work together to solve complex problems, help each other and care for each other. In the team, they learnt to think differently and understand and respect each other. Such experiences have undoubtedly accumulated valuable assets for their growth. The Independence Camp also provides an excellent practical platform for children to learn by doing and to develop independent thinking and problem-solving skills.
Ten Years Old Activity
G3 children had a birthday full of creativity and dreams at the Fuxing Art Centre - "We are ten years old! - A session of "Growth and Gratitude" allowed parents to review their children's growth by reciting and singing songs, which was not only a deep confession to the children, but also a feeling for the inheritance of life.
In the "Future Expectations" session, the children performed a career dream show, they bravely walked on the catwalk. This session combined career experience with the growth ceremony. On this special day, students dressed in their respective dreams of professional clothing to experience a variety of professional roles in advance, with expectations for the future, to celebrate their own ten-year-old growth ceremony.
Every child is a born artist. After the parent-child birthday banquet, the children visited the art exhibition with their parents and created their own art works under the guidance of the artists. This process not only let the children feel the charm of art, but also let them learn to think independently and improve their aesthetic ability in creation. This activity made parents realise the importance of respecting their children's individuality and fostering their creativity as they grow up.
Play is an important way for children's healthy psychological development. After the event, the children headed to the Rabbit Hutch to experience the Jigao Rabbit Hutch Play Carnival. Here, they played to their heart's content, released their childish innocence and enjoyed the joy of growing up. In this sea of fun, the children not only exercised their bodies, but also learnt to co-operate and share.
In this 10th birthday ceremony, which is full of love and ceremony, the children have taken a solid step forward, they feel the joy of growing up, and they have also plugged in the wings for their future dreams. As their closest teachers, we will accompany them with all our heart and help them to move forward bravely and grow strong in this marathon of life!
Join the Young Pioneers' Ceremony
In the "Strive to be a Good Member in the New Era" initiation ceremony organised by SCBS Primary School G2 students at the CFFC Children's Palace, the children not only ushered in an important moment in their development, but also gained a deeper understanding of the responsibilities and duties of young pioneers in the new era.
Brigade counsellor Miss Chen gave the students ardent expectations: "I hope that you grow up with the motherland in mind, set up lofty ideals, set your mind on youth, and strive for a lifetime; I hope that you pay attention to cultivation since childhood, cultivate noble morals, abide by the law, honesty and trustworthiness! I hope that you will be physically fit, not afraid of setbacks, and be positive! I hope you study hard, self-improvement, learning as a ladder of progress, and never stop moving forward!"
The event was unique in that the children not only participated in the solemn initiation ceremony, but also experienced a series of colourful activities such as wonderful magic tricks, the Bravehearts' Path and crafty DIY. The aim is to guide the children to learn to set their own aspirations from an early age, and to cultivate in them the spirit of love for the motherland, hard work and courage, self-discipline and self-improvement.
"Children's Day" and "2024 SCBS House Day"
SCBS has carefully constructed four houses named after great men and women who have made outstanding contributions to the development of mankind, namely, Gandhi House, Mandela House, Teresa House and Tu Youyou House. These four houses also carry the school's educational philosophy of fostering a sense of collective honour and belonging among students.
On the Children's Day, SCBS Primary School combined the "Children's Day Celebration" with the "2024 SCBS House Day", organising children to create artwork on canvas with the names and colours of the four houses as the theme. This activity not only let the children spend the first day of June in a pleasant atmosphere, but also provided a profound education on the spirit of houses.
SCBS Houses Picture Scroll
The yellow colour of Gandhi stands for innovation and wisdom
The green colour of Mandela symbolises freedom and equality
The blue colour of Teresa symbolises peace and tolerance
The orange colour of Tu Youyou Academy symbolises love and dedication.
The children's creative process not only deepened their understanding of the spirit of the 4 Houses, but also stimulated their pursuit of beauty and dedication.
It also stimulated their pursuit of beauty and creativity.
During the activity, the children quoted scriptures and incorporated their own understanding into their works. With the theme of "Passing on Love", the children of Teresa depicted a white cloud full of love, and the children of Tu Youyou painted a shining star of wisdom in orange to pay tribute to the Nobel Prize winner Tu Youyou, implying that they are constantly moving forward on the road of innovation.
This activity through the carrier of art creation, allowed the children to experience the unique charm of the house spirit in a pleasant atmosphere, and also provided a platform for the children to show themselves and stimulate their potential, so that the children benefited a lot in the process of creation. They incorporated the name and representative colours of the house into their artistic creations and splashed around on the colourful canvas, perfectly combining the spirit of the house with the joyful atmosphere of the Children's Day, creating a painting full of vitality and energy. These works not only showed the children's artistic talent, but also conveyed their deep understanding of the spirit of the house.
The House Day was a feast of knowledge and fun, traditional culture and modern thinking. In this activity, the children were able to practice teamwork, improve their language skills and gain a deeper understanding of the Chinese idiom culture through a variety of games such as Idiom Accumulation Challenge, Heart to Heart, and Passing the Ball Across the Floor, while at the same time combining knowledge from the subjects of Chinese, Mathematics, Physical Education, English and other disciplines.
