From the Young Pioneers' Congress

to the launch of the ‘Reading Capsule’

At SCBS Primary School, a dream of a reading space designed, built and read by students from ‘0 to 1’ is now a reality. In this year's Young Pioneers' Congress, William Wu, the G4 librarian of SCBS Primary School, as a representative of the Young Pioneers, initiated the proposal of ‘stimulating students’ interest in reading and creating a sustainable reading programme’. After receiving the proposal, the school immediately integrated internal and external resources, and joined hands with the Shanghai Fuxing Art Centre to help the representative of the Young Pioneers and the students to turn the dream of building a ‘Reading Capsule’ into reality.

The ‘Reading Capsule’ programme has been launched!

Launching Ceremony of the ‘Reading Capsule’ programme

Eeach class in SCBS Primary School quickly set up a ‘Reading Capsule’ programme team, with six students from each class taking on the following core roles in the programme, including a spokesperson, two student journalists, two experts and a programme director

The Wonderful Architecture of Points, Lines and Surface

After the launch of the ‘Reading  Capsule’ programme, three public lessons were held as scheduled.

The first public lesson was ‘The Wonderful Architecture of Points, Lines and Surface'. In the first public lesson, the teacher opened the door to the basics of architecture for the children in an in-depth manner. The first thing that caught their eyes was the points, lines and surfaces of architecture. With the help of vivid images and simple examples, the teacher made the children understand how points coalesce to form lines, and how lines are interwoven to form surfaces, which in turn builds up the basic outlines and forms of buildings. From the regular geometric shapes of ancient architecture to the dynamic and changing line combinations of modern architecture. Through the question and answer session, the children were able to appreciate the charm of points, lines and surfaces in the aesthetics of architecture.

Children fill in the construction plan of the ‘Reading Capsule’

After the first session, SCBS' young architects used their knowledge of ‘Points, Lines and Surfaces’ to build a model of a building.

Architecture and the Five Senses :

The Reading Architecture

The second public lesson was ‘Architecture and the Five Senses : The Reading Architecture’. Lesson., the teachers taught the students to use the ‘five senses’ to appreciate the beauty of architecture, such as using sight and the art of light and shadow to feel the beauty of the building's shape; using sound to add interest to the building; using smell to add memory to the building; using touch and materials to increase interaction; and using taste to increase the richness of the experience of the activity.

After the second public lesson, the children used four small boxes to build different functional structures, combining materials such as laser paper, pearlescent cardboard, and even spraying them with their favourite perfume or other scents to design a model that could provide an experience of the ‘five senses’.

Figure--Ground Relationship

and Positive and Negative Architectur

The theme of the third public lesson was the relationship between the bottom of architectural drawings, mainly explaining to the children the relationship between architecture and buildings, and the relationship between architecture and the spatial environment. With different perspectives, the course guided the children to fly to the sky to overlook the development process of the city and recognise the relationship between architecture and spatial environment, and at the same time led the students back to the perspective of people landing on the ground to observe the relationship between architecture and buildings.

After the third public lesson, the children will combine the modelling assignments of Lesson 1 and Lesson 2 to take photos to deepen their understanding of the relationship between the base of the plan. In addition, the teachers recommended many extracurricular books on architectural history and building construction that are suitable for primary school students.

Background information

What is the ‘Reading Capsule’?

The ‘Reading Capsule’ is a campus public space that implements the concepts of environmental protection and sustainable development, as well as a creative sharing platform that combines architectural aesthetics with functionality and practicality. It may be able to borrow books, extend campus activities, and conduct humanistic and artistic exchanges. It will generate infinite possibilities under the creative and collaborative practices of students! It will be a creative space platform that blends traditional skills with a sense of technology, and will be comfortable and enjoyable for children both physically and mentally.

Three phases to create ‘Reading Capsule’

Over the course of the next school year, the ‘Reading Capsule’ programme will be carried out in three phases.

Phase 1: Learning about Architecture and Design

Children will study the basics of architectural design and give full play to their creativity by participating in the design of the exclusive ‘Reading Capsule’ logo, starting a journey of wisdom and imagination.

Phase 2: Building the ‘Reading Capsule’

The children will build the ‘Reading Capsule’ with their own hands, experience the unique charm of green building and the powerful force of science and technology innovation, and pour out the dream space with their hands and sweat.

Phase 3: Sustainable Space

Children will learn a wide range of knowledge and skills about how to run and manage a library with care and organise enrichment activities.

Through these three progressive and mutually reinforcing phases, children are able to improve their overall quality and teamwork skills through hands-on practice.

We are sure you are already looking forward to the ‘Reading Capsule’ in SCBS Primary School. During the upcoming academic holidays, SCBS students will go beyond the classroom to look for the ubiquitous ‘points, lines and surfaces’ of architecture around them on their travels and in their lives, so that they can open up their five senses and learn the aesthetics of architecture. The ‘Reading Capsule’ programme allows students to participate in the whole process from design to construction to operation and management, which is not only the process of building a reading space, but also a growth process full of exploration, thus better stimulating the diversified potential of SCBS students and laying a foundation for their future development. Let's look forward to the official debut of the SCBS Primary School ‘Reading Capsule’!
