On 12 May 2024, the CSIAF (China Shanghai International Arts Festival) Youth Art Troupe was officially announced, and ten SCBS students were selected as the first batch of members through layers of screening auditions. Under systematic theatre training from professional tutors, after three months of intensive rehearsals, these children stepped onto the stage of the Edinburgh International Festival with the original experimental child’s play “Ancient Ship”, telling the Chinese story to the world and interpreting the charm of Shanghai.

The premiere of “Ancient Ship” at the Pentland Auditorium of the Edinburgh International Conference Centre was a great success! With fluent English dialogue, sincere emotions and rich body language, our young artists vividly portrayed the history and culture of China, allowing the world to understand and appreciate the charm of China. These little bodies burst with great energy and won the love and applause of the audience from all over the world. On stage, each character was portrayed to the fullest, and the audience seemed to travel through time and space, experiencing a wonderful journey of courage, friendship and growth.

“Ancient Ship” is not only a visual feast, but also a cultural journey, which perfectly blends China's historical stories and modern spirit. As such the culture exchange formed an invisible bond with emotion as a thread, closely connecting people of different cultural backgrounds, touching their heartstrings and arousing resonance. Right after watching this play, some local audiences even said they wanted to come to China, to Shanghai, to see this ancient ship with their own eyes.

About the Play

In the early morning of 21 November 2022, in the Chongming District of Shanghai, the Yangtze River Estuary Hengsha waters, after seven years of underwater archaeology, more than 150 years of the ancient ship was finally salvaged as a whole. It is like a “time capsule”, vividly displaying the prosperous scene of the golden waterway shipping of the Yangtze River since the late Qing Dynasty, which is important evidence of the “Maritime Silk Road”, and also a valuable witness of Shanghai as a world trade and shipping centre.

Based on such background, the original experimental child’s play “Ancient Ship”, was produced by the CSIAF, with the perspective of contemporary youth and led the audience on a journey of fantasy and adventure, which not only explored the “past and present life” of the ancient ship, but also revealed the development of Shanghai's culture and economy and its profound heritage. During the process of creation, the children not only learnt the essence of ancient history and culture, but also inspired cultural confidence and a sense of national identity. It is worth mentioning that the work also emphasizes the realisation of the self-fulfilment of teenagers in their growth, encouraging them to bravely pursue their dreams and ride the waves forward.

Before leaving for the UK, the troupe also came to preview their performance of “Ancient Ship” in front of parents and teachers. All the audience burst into great applause and cheers for the children’s excellent performance.

Ms. Yingqi Tang, Vice President of the CSIAF Centre, was present to watch the performance and expressed her high recognition and appreciation. She also extended earnest wishes to the children and awarded each of them with certificates and play manuals.

Behind the stage is the sweat and persistence of the children. Parents have witnessed the whole process of the children’s effort and transformation, and their hearts were full of joy and pride. The play was performed in English, even though the children come from a bilingual school and are usually fluent in English, they had to master complicated lines, dance moves and acting techniques, which is quite challenging. Not only was it a project-based learning experience, but it was also a challenge to work along with the other young performers together. They learnt how to communicate and collaborate with their peers from different schools and backgrounds to overcome obstacles, step out of their comfort zone and take on new challenges!

We had the pleasure of interviewing Asher Han's mother from SCBS to share the story of Asher.

Q

How did Asher manage to juggle the two when rehearsals coincided with final exams? How did he overcome the difficulties?

A

When Asher first joined the cast, it was during the school's final exam period, and the weekly rehearsals took up most of his time after school. In addition to completing school work after school, he had to practice acting, dancing, memorising lines and learning new songs. Sometimes a line or an action could be practised several times before the director was satisfied. At such times he would get a bit impatient, thinking that it was too difficult and he sacrificed his playtime but still couldn't manage. Luckily, our school was very supportive of this performance, and the teacher adjusted the amount of homework and the due date according to his situation. In this way, he practised over and over again, though sometimes he was in a hurry and cried, he would calm down for a while, dry his tears and get back to practise again. Through his own efforts, he was able to rehearse and study without any delay, and he got a satisfactory grade in the final exam.

Q

How do you think such an experience helped Asher?

A

First of all, it taught him what hard work is. Every rehearsal was about 4-5 hours, and when he came back, he had to continue to practice and write homework, it was very intensive, but the result was that he reached his pre-set goal for the final exam. And in this preview performance, we also saw his great progress, this was his own hard work to achieve such results, which was a rare experience for him. Secondly, when he went abroad with his troupe, although he was led by the teachers, he had to do most of the living things by himself, which was the first step for him to really learn to take care of himself. Going to the UK and facing jet lag, tight schedules and performance tasks would be a test of his self-management. Also, the children in the cast are all from different schools and ages, each with their own strengths. Through this period of time, from being strangers to encouraging and supporting each other, I think this experience will be a valuable asset to him in his growth.

Q

Now, the children are representing Shanghai, representing China to perform overseas, how do you feel? What kind of expectations and blessings do you have for them?

A

After three months of hard rehearsals, the teachers and children have put in a lot of hard work. The play was very touching and the children acted very well, it was really not easy. Many of our parents were moved to tears after watching it. We hope that they would be able to represent China at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and have a successful performance. This will be the flowers and applause that Asher will get by his own efforts, and will accompany him for quite a long period of time. We are all happy for him. We hope he will bring out his best and wish him all the success.

After the wonderful performance in Edinburgh, “Ancient Ship” will sail away to London to continue showing the world the profound heritage and infinite charm of Chinese culture, as well as the confidence and talent of Chinese teenagers. Let's wish these Shanghai kids the best of luck and look forward to their triumphant return from the world stage!
