SCBS

SCBS

Introduction

New semester, new friends, SCBS understands that the essence of education is caring and every student should enjoy a safe, respectful and inclusive learning environment. For this reason, in conjunction with the work of the Huangpu District Education Bureau on the new semester's September Safe Education Month, SCBS took the initiative to carry out the theme of preventing students from bullying in schools, aiming at creating a harmonious and beautiful campus through the well-planned activities, so that the whole school can participate in creating a harmonious and beautiful campus together.

SCBS Awareness and Education Month on the Theme of Anti-Bullying among Students in Schools

SCBS believes that bullying in schools not only causes both physical and psychological harm to the victims, but also affects the overall atmosphere of the school and the order of education and teaching. Therefore, before the opening of the anti-bullying publicity and education month, the school leaders and teachers of the Moral Education Office and all grades attached great importance to it, conducted many in-depth discussions and formulated a series of activity programmes.

SCBS has both in-depth discussions and concrete practices on the theme of preventing bullying among students in schools during the month of publicity and education. In order to reflect the relevance and effectiveness of education, the school has uniquely divided it into three phases in order to deepen students' understanding of the issue and their awareness of prevention.

The first stage is based on collective learning

and education of the grade

Guiding students to set up correct values through collective strength. Through the first regular mentor meeting, grade morning meeting and class morning meeting preaching, combined with specific student cases in the grade group, the relevant contents of the SCBS ‘Student Bullying Prevention and Disposal Workbook’ are explained in depth, aiming at letting the students truly understand and recognise the harm of bullying in schools.

In the second stage of publicity and education

Poster study and classroom environment decoration are used as a vehicle to give students a more intuitive understanding of preventing bullying in schools visually. In this process, tutors organise students to study the content of the posters in depth, and encourage them to publish their learning experiences, initiatives and create slogans on bullying prevention, which not only increases students' participation, but also allows them to enhance their awareness of prevention in practice.

The third stage of concluding education incorporates the concept of home-school co-operation in parenting

By introducing the anti-bullying publicity and education to parent ambassadors in the September Parents' Committee, parents will be made aware of the school's efforts in preventing bullying in schools, and will in turn promote the joint concern and participation of home and school in this issue. This will not only help to form a favourable situation of home-school co-education, but also enable students to receive care and guidance in both the home and school environments.

Through these three stages of education, SCBS aims to enable students to recognise the problem in learning, raise their awareness of prevention in practice, and deepen their knowledge in summarising, so as to truly achieve the educational goal of preventing bullying in schools.

Multidimensional awareness-raising activities

On Campus

During the anti-bullying publicity and education month of SCBS, all parts of the campus showed their determination and style to say ‘no’ to bullying in schools. The morning assembly of the grades became an important place for publicity. Teachers elaborated the concepts, characteristics and hazards of bullying in schools through vivid cases and in-depth explanations, so that students would be deeply aware of the serious consequences of bullying in schools, and thus raise their awareness of self-protection and stay away from bullying behaviour in schools.

Sharing by student representatives

The student representative shared her insights from the Bullying Awareness and Education Month in the morning assembly of her grade. She first talked about the types and cruelty of bullying in schools. In participating in the activities of the Bullying Prevention Awareness and Education Month, she deeply realised that bullying in schools is not only a physical injury, but also a trauma to the mind. Those students who are bullied may be plunged into fear, low self-esteem and loneliness as a result, even affecting their whole life.

She said that through the activities of the Bullying Prevention Awareness and Education Month, she not only learnt a lot about bullying in schools, but also understood more about her own responsibilities and shared her thoughts on how to prevent bullying in schools. She believes that everyone should start with themselves, learn to respect others and not to bully the weak. Every student should stand up bravely, not be an indifferent bystander, and communicate with teachers in time. She called on students to be united and work together to create a harmonious and safe school environment.

The class morning assembly preaching is more focused and closer to the actual life of students. In each class, the teacher, taking into account the actual situation of the class, guided the students to discuss and share their views and experiences on bullying in schools, and guided them to think about how to avoid becoming a bully, how the bullied should respond, and how not to be an indifferent bystander, etc. Some students shared what they had seen on the Internet, and we analysed how they should respond. Some students shared what they had seen on the Internet about bullying in schools and analysed together how they should respond to it. Some students put forward some suggestions for preventing bullying in schools, such as uniting with classmates and respecting others.

Student Sharing

‘I am acutely aware that bullying in schools is not limited to physical confrontations, but exists between words. We tend to reduce school bullying to a single term, and these bullying behaviours not only cause psychological trauma to the victims, but also have a negative impact on the whole school atmosphere. In the class morning assembly, the teacher led us to analyse many real cases in depth, which gave me a more concrete understanding of this phenomenon.’

‘Through the in-depth study of the class morning assembly I have come to realise that bullying in schools is not just about the role of the bully and the bullied, but that bystanders also play an important role. The role of bystanders is often overlooked in bullying incidents, yet they are a key factor in the performance of bullies. I found that the role of bystanders in bullying incidents is also reflected in the psychological impact they have on the bully. When bullies find that their behaviour is not approved by bystanders, or even opposed, they tend to feel guilty and fearful, and thus moderate their behaviour. Conversely, if bystanders turn a blind eye to the bullying behaviour, or even applaud and applaud it, then the bully will become more brazen.’

In addition, the creative poster display also became a bright landscape in the campus. Students used their creativity and imagination to express their opposition to bullying in schools and their desire for a harmonious campus with their paintbrushes.

Some posters showed scenes of bullying in schools through watercolour paintings, giving people a deep impression of the dangers of bullying in schools. Some posters, with the theme of ‘Rejecting Bullying in Schools, Building a Friendly and Harmonious Campus’, listed the forms and causes of bullying in schools in the picture, and also wrote out the mnemonics for coping with bullying in schools in a very creative way.

The students who created this poster said that the bright colours and warning yellow convey a strong visual impact, which not only reveals the serious consequences that bullies may face, such as school disciplinary actions and legal responsibilities. The eye element is to show the physical injuries suffered by the bullies under the bullying behaviour, so that viewers can visualise their pain, as a reminder to draw attention to the deep-rooted damage that bullying can do to the mind of the bullies. The text in the poster is an appeal to bystanders to abandon their indifference and take the responsibility to stop bullying.

SCBS understands the far-reaching impact that bullying in schools has on the bullied and the entire school environment. For this reason, during the month of publicity and education on the theme of preventing bullying in schools, students have drafted a spontaneous initiative to draw the attention of teachers and students to this problem. The initiative also conveys their firm resistance to bullying in schools.

Implementation of anti-bullying publicity and education in SCBS

Due to SCBS' deep understanding of family education and the important role of parents in the growth process of students, SCBS not only focuses on the role of students in bullying prevention, but also actively encourages parents to intervene and help resolve conflicts. In the theme of anti-bullying education in schools, SCBS not only attaches importance to the main role of students, but also actively encourages and supports parents to intervene and jointly contribute to the resolution of conflicts. In this context, the school advocates parents to learn and grow together with their children, in order to form a favourable environment for home-school co-education.

There is a long way to go to prevent bullying in schools. The prevention of bullying in schools also requires the joint efforts of schools and families. SCBS will continue to strengthen the education and management of students, establish a sound mechanism for the prevention and handling of bullying in schools, and continuously improve the awareness and coping ability of teachers and students on bullying in schools. Teachers pay attention to students' mental health at all times and identify and solve problems in time. Parents also need to give their children sufficient care and proper guidance, and educate them to establish correct values and behavioural norms. At the same time, the school will also strengthen cooperation with families and society to build an all-round anti-school bullying prevention system, creating a safer and more harmonious environment for students' growth.

SCBS invites professional counsellors to the school from time to time to discuss psychological topics with students.

In order to effectively prevent and control bullying in schools, SCBS promotes multi-departmental liaison with the help of professional forces. The school invites psychological counsellors and other experts to give special lectures from time to time to provide professional guidance to teachers and students. In addition, the school also establishes cooperative relationships with public security, justice and the Youth League Committee to jointly carry out legal education and moral education, guiding students to realise the dangers of bullying, and at the same time strengthening moral education to cultivate empathy and a sense of caring for others among students.

SCBS

SCBS and the Wuliqiao Police Station of the Huangpu Branch of the Shanghai Municipal Public Security Bureau jointly organised a lecture on ‘Learning the Constitution and Speaking of the Constitution’, which focused on bullying in schools and aimed at raising students' legal awareness and helping to build a harmonious campus. The lecture analysed in depth the causes, hazards and legal consequences of bullying in schools, and the speaker made students have a more comprehensive understanding of bullying in schools through vivid cases.

At the level of students‘ cognition, the teacher will ask students about the relevant learning content, covering questions on students’ knowledge, attitudes and behavioural intentions towards bullying in schools. Through students‘ responses after the education, the degree of enhancement of students’ awareness of school bullying will be assessed. Discussions will be organised for students to discuss topics or cases of school bullying. Observe students' performance in the discussion, such as whether they actively participate, whether their views are correct, and whether they understand the school's regulations for handling bullying incidents. Through group discussions, we can gain a more in-depth understanding of students‘ knowledge and attitudes towards bullying in schools, as well as the impact of the school's publicity activities on students’ way of thinking.

At the level of student behaviour, teachers and school administrators observe students' behaviour in their daily school life. Attention is paid to observing students' interactions during recess, physical education and activity classes to see if they are bullying others or being bullied. At the same time, observe the way students deal with conflicts and contradictions, whether they are able to solve problems using peaceful and rational methods and intervene when necessary.

SCBS

According to the specific requirements of the Huangpu District Education Bureau on the prevention of bullying in schools, the school has formulated a workbook on the prevention and handling of bullying among students. We do our best to provide all-round care and assistance.

The anti-bullying publicity and education month is of profound significance, and although it is a long way to go, the future is promising. SCBS will endeavour to build a safe, friendly, harmonious and stable campus environment through more diversified activities in the future, so as to protect the youthful dreams of the students.
