(I wrote this in less than twenty minutes - believe it or not.)
Bury Me Alive
Bury me alive and leave me there
So that my eyes shall not see
Laughter and tears in 650 words
The cenotaphs of creativity
Blinded by the salty waves
Pouring into exam rooms, my sight
Blurs as rows of desks and chairs
Are jeopardised by the rising tide
Bury me alive and leave me there
So that my ears shall not hear
That shrill cry from he counselor’s
Office: “You’re nowhere near
Harvard, or Yale, or Princeton - settle
On something practical, so that
You get a decent ED offer, and we
Get to keep our reputation intact.”
Bury me alive and dig me out
When those sitting in marble-floored
Admission offices leave their seats
And Gothic buildings, walk toward
Young hearts and souls on every land
Chatting over a coffee bought
By whomever - as long as the war
Over Affirmative Action is no longer fought
Bury me alive and dig me out
When sunlight beams on windowsills
And sons and daughters from coast to coast
Are free to roam wherever their will
Takes them, never to turn their heads
At the tolling of school bells once
So that with joy I shall gladly rise
From my grave, and join their dance
