Vale’s nickel arm hit by lower prices, higher costs

Vale’s nickel arm has swung to a quarterly loss due to lower prices and higher costs, though it is focusing on the ramp-up at Canadian operations.

Earlier this month, the second underground mine of the Voisey’s Bay mine extension project achieved mechanical completion, paving the way for an increase in nickel production in the coming months.

It claims to be on track to achieve the all-in cost guidance range of $15,000-16,500 per tonne of nickel in the full year.Conversely, the copper all-in cost guidance is again being revised down, now to $2,900-3,300/t, Kallanish Power Materials learns.

In the quarter ended 30 September, nickel and copper all-in costs were $18,073/t and $2,851/t, down 3% and 13% respectively compared to the same period last year.

The nickel division swung to an adjusted loss of $66 million, from a $100m profit in the same period last year, while net revenues shed 12% to $904m. This was due to the average realised price dropping by 20% to $17,012/t and volumes rising by 4% to 41,000 t.
铜的调整后利润增长34%，达到3.6亿美元，净收入增长15%，达到7.59亿美元。该部门受益于第三季度平均实现价格上涨17%，达到9,016美元/吨，但产量略有下降，为6.1万吨。
Meanwhile, adjusted profits for copper rose by 34% to $360m and net revenues came in 15% higher at $759m. The division benefitted from a 17% increase in the average realised price of $9,016/t during Q3, while volumes were slightly lower at 61,000 t.
