South Korea’s President Yoon Suk Yeol faced mounting calls for his impeachment on Wednesday after his failed attempt to impose martial law triggered the country’s worst constitutional crisis in decades.

Opposition lawmakers called on him to resign or face proceedings that would remove him from office following a parliamentary vote, while protesters against the 63-year-old former prosecutor held a rally in central Seoul on Wednesday morning.

The turmoil came after Yoon declared martial law in an unscheduled national broadcast late on Tuesday, saying he needed to purge South Korea of “anti-state forces” and “normalise the country”.

Greece is optimistic of striking a deal with the British Museum on the Parthenon Sculptures as soon as next year, after Downing Street reiterated that Sir Keir Starmer would not stand in the way of an agreement between the two sides.

The UK prime minister met Kyriakos Mitsotakis, his Greek counterpart, in Downing Street on Tuesday for wide-ranging talks. Although Number 10 said the future of the so-called Elgin Marbles was not on Starmer’s agenda, Greek officials said Mitsotakis had raised the subject of the 2,500-year-old carvings.

Talks between the Greek government and the museum have been under way for several years, and Starmer has previously made it clear that he would not block a “loan” accord if the two sides can agree to it.

Barring a last-minute U-turn by the far-right leader Marine Le Pen or other opposition, a no-confidence vote against Prime Minister Michel Barnier seems set to plunge France into the unknown as early as Wednesday. If it does pass, it will be the first time a government has been toppled in this way since Georges Pompidou’s in 1962. The EU’s second-largest economy will be left struggling to form a workable administration and pass an emergency budget by the year-end, the reputation of its political class further dented. It is hard to think of a worse moment: a month after the implosion of Olaf Scholz’s coalition in Germany, and weeks before Donald Trump’s return to the White House.

The potential chaos underlines the folly of the snap elections called by President Emmanuel Macron in July that produced a fractured and fractious parliament. His advisers continue to justify the decision by saying that, without it, France was heading for a showdown over a cost-cutting budget needed to reduce a ballooning deficit forecast at over 6 per cent this year. That showdown has come to pass nonetheless.

For now, despite Barnier’s warnings last week of a “big storm” in the markets, this is a political not a financial crisis. Though French borrowing costs have hit a 12-year high against Germany’s, there is little sign of Eurozone contagion. The risk to French bonds, however, will persist if the political instability becomes protracted.

Meta has conceded it was too heavy-handed with certain content moderation in the past, in an overture to Donald Trump as its chief executive Mark Zuckerberg seeks an “active role” in shaping tech policy debates with the incoming US administration.

Sir Nick Clegg, Meta’s president of global affairs, said the social media platform previously “overdid it a bit” when moderating pandemic-related content, a concession that appears designed to placate the president-elect, who has repeatedly accused the company of censorship and silencing conservative speech.

Clegg’s comments come as Silicon Valley leaders are jockeying to curry favour with Trump, who in the past has repeatedly clashed with what he considers a left-leaning constituency that has funded his opponents and censored him.
