A place for the couple to meditate and create.
Nestled in the pristine and vast Joshua Tree highlands, Desert House, designed by San Francisco architectural firm Ryan Leidner Architecture, is a response to its surroundings. It was constructed as a space for American artist and painter Heather Day and creative writer Chase McBride to both inspire their art and meet the needs of everyday life.

The arid Californian landscape forms the key to the story behind this desert home, and the design balances the irregularity of the surrounding terrain with the artist couple's quest for a minimalist style that blends in with the desert environment. The compact form and exposed beam structure follow the principles of mid-century construction, while the clean lines and considered restraint take inspiration from Japanese and Scandinavian modernism.

Located in an undeveloped area of the desert, the project's balance between a sensible, cosy home space and the vast surrounding landscape was a key design consideration. So, according to architect Ryan Leidner, ‘We wanted the house to be both definitively sculptural and a warm, pleasant home.’

建筑的最终呈现在很大程度上借鉴了沙漠本身的质朴之美。大窗户展现出无尽的地平线美景，同时引入充足光线，并自由地流动于室内。
The final presentation of the building draws heavily on the rustic beauty of the desert itself. Large windows reveal endless views of the horizon while bringing in plenty of light that flows freely through the interior.
从一个开放式的起居区流畅地过渡到露台，将室内延伸至广阔的室外。这种设计模糊了内部空间和荒野之间的界限，也契合业主对既能最大限度地避免干预环境，又能释放身心的住宅愿景。
A fluid transition from an open-plan living area to a terrace extends the interior into the vast outdoors. The design blurs the line between interior space and wilderness, and is in keeping with the owner's vision of a home that minimises interference with the environment while allowing for release.
MATERIAL

住宅采用木质框架和灰泥饰面建造而成，哪怕在恶劣的沙漠气候条件下，这些材料依然经久耐用。白色的外墙与柔和的外部景观形成鲜明对比，确保房屋结构既突出又不喧宾夺主。起初，建筑师Ryan Leidner想采用中性色的外墙灰泥来与景观相融合，但是后来意识到强烈的对比更能突出建筑与周围环境的关系。
The home is constructed with timber frames and stucco finishes that are durable even in the harsh desert climate. The white façade contrasts with the soft exterior landscaping, ensuring that the structure stands out without overpowering it. Initially, architect Ryan Leidner wanted to use neutral coloured exterior stucco to blend in with the landscape, but realised that a strong contrast would better emphasise the building's relationship with its surroundings.
从原木横梁到混凝土地板，天然材料的使用使空间与周围环境相融合，让居住者和他们的艺术作品成为真正的视觉焦点。每一个精心设计的细节，无不体现了意在打造一个既实用又富有诗意的住宅环境。
The use of natural materials, from log beams to concrete floors, blends the space with its surroundings and allows the occupants and their artwork to be a true visual focal point. Every carefully designed detail reflects the intention to create a residential environment that is both functional and poetic.

The minimalist style and furnishings imbue the building with an air of serenity, and the design team planned a separate drawing room for artist Heather, where sunlight streams in through the floor-to-ceiling windows, leaving the space wide and bright. In addition, more buffer zones are used to balance the intervisibility and connection between shared and private spaces.
沙漠之家不仅是一处栖身之所，更是一处以供沉思与创作的空间，在这里，艺术、生活和景观之间的界限被有意模糊掉。对于Heather和Chase来说，此地既是庇护所，也是灵感之源——这里直观地反映了他们作为创作者的一种内在需求，既希望拥抱宁静，也能迎接独特环境所带来的挑战。
The Desert House is not only a place to stay, but also a space for contemplation and creativity, where the boundaries between art, life and landscape are intentionally blurred. For Heather and Chase, this place is both a refuge and a source of inspiration - an intuitive reflection of their intrinsic need as creators to embrace both the serenity and challenges of their unique environment.
