CANYON HOUSE

In the Pacific Palisade neighborhood, there isa notable Rustic Canyon Residence, originally built in 1923 and lovingly remodeled by Neutra in 1937. In 1993, a new post-modern building was built on the site where the house had been destroyed.

Now David Thompson, founder of Assembledge+ and Jamie Bush, founder of interior design studio Jamie Bush + Co, have redrawn inspiration from their modernist roots to create this light-filled family home.

FUSION OF ELEMENTS

The canyon house, with an area of 75 square meters, is inspired by the interesting architectural history of the site itself, which is now part of Pacific Palisades. The plan of the house blends into the landscape and is built with the Western red cedar, creating a deep connection with the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Monica Mountains that will evolve over time in the future.

While satisfying the daily life of the family, the house needs to balance the relationship between the public area and the private area, so that the residents can completely relax here. The lower level, bathed in natural light, includes a theater, music room and guest room, while the upper level houses the master bedroom and office, with panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Monica Mountains.

BALANCE

Stepping inside, the double-height living room uses a deep and unadorned interior and carefully selected objects, even reminiscent of a canyon cave, to create a fresh, quiet and peaceful atmosphere.

In the center of the space, a striking freestanding fireplace, decorated with a barbarist ceramic mural by artist Stan Bitters, becomes the artistic center and visual focal point of the whole lot, separating the kitchen from the living room in an elegant way.

LIFE IN THE CANYON

The treetops bedroom is clad in western red cedar and features large floor-to-ceiling Windows, blurring the boundary between the warm wood interior and the distant views of the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Monica Mountains, and emphasizing the immersive experience of being in the forest as a private and spacious place to rest. It builds an intimate relationship between family members and provides an important guarantee for the comfort of living.

David Thompson
In Thompson's view, the terrace landscaping utilizes local drought-tolerant plants to maximize the site's permeability, while the overhanging lattice on the south-facing glass window helps reduce solar heat in the living and sleeping areas.

The outdoor infinity pool and spa extend to the horizon. A variety of carefully selected materials - brick, ebony, oak and black metal - contrast and complement the western red cedar exterior. These materials enhance the building's connection to the environment, making it naturally integrated into the natural landscape of California.

The Canyon House blends local design traditions with elements of Japanese and Brazilian modernism to create a subtle and unified aesthetic, creating "a continuity between the interior and the landscape that harmonizes the built environment with the natural landscape", providing an ideal setting for living, leisure and entertainment, and ultimately presenting "an extension of the living space into the canyon".
