On the evening of November 13, Shekou Management and Service Center for Expats(Shekou MSCE) and Hanlin Language Center jointly organized the Chinese cooking and international food sharing event, teaching foreigners how to make Chinese dishes at home. This event provided a great opportunity for foreigners to learn how to cook local Cantonese dishes with local residents, and learn Chinese expressions related to cooking. Participants were also invited to bring a dish from their own country to share with everyone. Let’s take a look with Shekou MSCE!

为了让外国友人在家也能做出可口的中国菜,11月13日晚上,蛇口境外人员管理服务中心联合汉林语言中心开展了一场别开生面的中餐烹饪及各国美食分享活动,让外国友人一边跟本地居民学地道的广东菜,一边学习烹饪相关的汉语。活动还邀请参加者们带一份自己国家的美食来同大家一起分享。一场活动,享用多国美食,光是想一想,都令人食指大动。

Cutting vegetables, heating oil and the pan, adding ingredients and seasonings... Foreign friends carefully observed the steps demonstrated by the teacher and learned attentively. While demonstrating the operation, the teacher explained the Chinese names of various ingredients and the Chinese expressions of the key steps in cooking. Andrew from Russia, who used the pan like a local resident; Mike from Georgia was very outgoing and invited everyone to have a look while cooking, and a young lady who was skilled in slicing the garlic and toppings .

切菜、热油锅、下菜、加调料……外国友人们仔细观察老师演示的步骤,认真学习。老师一边演示操作,一边讲解各类食材的汉语名称以及做菜关键步骤的汉语表达。来自俄罗斯的Andrew颠起炒锅来有模有样;来自格鲁吉亚的Mike“社牛”大爆发,边炒边吆喝着让大家都来看一看;还有隐藏的刀工高手,切蒜配料信手拈来。

Before long, the delicious Chinese dishes such as pineapple spareribs, boiled kale, beef and onion dumplings were finished, and the teacher also taught them how to mix their own secret sauce, which was poured on the boiled kale, and it was really appetizing and yummy. Foreign friends were amazed by this and could not wait to taste these delicious dishes with the chopsticks. Oksana from Ukraine said she really liked this boiled kale, which was easy to make and very healthy.

不一会,菠萝排骨、白灼芥蓝、白灼生菜、各色水饺等色香味俱全的中国菜完成啦,老师还教大家调配了自己的秘制料汁,淋在白灼芥蓝上,真是鲜香扑鼻。外国友人们对此惊叹不已,纷纷迫不及待地拿着餐具想要品尝。来自乌克兰的Oksana说她非常喜欢这道白灼芥蓝,做起来又快又香,还非常健康。

Not only did foreign friends learn how to cook Chinese food, but they tasted Chinese food and many special delicacies from different countries. Mily and Mayis from Colombia brought Colombian fried dumplings with a spicy tomato dipping sauce  to share with everyone. Everyone thumbed up for it and ate up other foreign specialties such as apple and cinnamon pancakes, fried potato pancakes, and pilaf eaten with hands very quickly.

外国友人们不仅学习了如何做中国菜,品尝到了中国菜,也品尝到大家分享的各类特色美食。来自哥伦比亚的的Mily和Mayis带来了哥伦比亚的哥伦比亚炸饺子分享给大家,配上酸辣的番茄蘸酱,大家都赞不绝口。还有苹果肉桂松饼、炸土豆饼、手抓饭等其他国外特色美食也让大家开启了“光盘行动”。

Many expat residents living in China are very into Chinese food. However, language barriers, not knowing some Chinese cooking ingredients and complicated cooking methods keep them from making Chinese food by themselves. Through this activity, Chinese food is not something they can only enjoy in restaurants, but some daily dishes they can cook at home. And it also makes them have a deeper understanding of Chinese food culture.

在中国生活的外国居民很多对中国美食有着浓厚的兴趣,但不会汉语、不认识某些食材、不懂烹饪方法成为了他们制作中国菜的绊脚石。本次活动旨在教他们如何通过简单的步骤做出可口的中国菜,让中国菜对于他们来说不仅仅是去餐馆才能吃到的食物,也让他们了解更多中国饮食文化。
