At least two Union ministries — Electronics and Information Technology and Commerce and Industry — are pushing for easier visa norms for entry of Chinese technicians after the domestic industry raised concerns that export orders were not being fulfilled due to delays in grant of visas.

A senior official in the Commerce and Industry ministry told The Indian Express, “The department is aware of the concerns raised by the industry and we are pushing for limited entry of Chinese technicians to resolve the issue.”

The Tata Group is reportedly in advanced discussions to acquire a majority stake in the Indian unit of BBK Group-owned Chinese smartphone maker Vivo, according to sources familiar with the matter who spoke to MoneyControl.

Oppo, another smartphone brand of China's BBK Group, is also said to be in talks with local players to divest its Indian unit.

The Indian government is keen on ensuring that any joint venture between a Chinese smartphone company and an Indian partner involves at least a 51% stake held by the domestic firm. Additionally, the government wants the joint venture to have local leadership and distribution.

Escalating tensions with China are said to have cost Indian electronics manufacturers $15 billion ( ₹1.25 lakh crore) in production losses as well as 100,000 jobs in the past four years, the Economic Times reported.

In submissions to various ministries, the electronics manufacturing industry said India has also lost out on a $10 billion ( ₹83,550 crore) export opportunity besides $2 billion in value addition loss, according to the report.

According to industry executives, 4,000-5,000 visa applications of Chinese executives are currently awaiting government go-ahead, hindering the Indian electronics manufacturing industry’s expansion plans.

This is despite India setting up a mechanism to clear business visa applications within 10 days.

The India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA) and Manufacturers Association of Information Technology (MAIT) lobby groups are urging the Centre to hasten visa approvals for Chinese executives that are currently taking more than a month.

 The Indian government may soon allow new joint ventures (JVs) between Chinese and Indian companies, provided the Indian partner holds a majority shareholding, according to a report by The Economic Times.

This development comes after discussions between government officials, particularly from the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), and chief executives from the electronics and automobile industries interested in forming JVs with Chinese firms.

 The United Kingdom (UK) has overtaken China to become India’s fourth-largest export market in May, commerce department data showed. The UK was India’s sixth-largest export destination in May last year.

While exports to the UK grew by a third to $1.37 billion in May, the shipments to China saw 3 per cent growth at $1.33 billion last month.

The disaggregated data for May wasn’t immediately available, but trends over the past few months showed that exports to the UK were dominated by items such as machinery, food items, pharmaceutical products, textiles, jewellery, iron, and steel, among other items.

MUMBAI, June 11 (Reuters) - India will focus on finding solutions to the border issues with China that has long strained ties between the neighbouring countries, Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar said on Tuesday after assuming charge for a second straight term.

China said it is ready to collaborate with India to improve bilateral relations and mentioned that their border disputes “should be handled properly.” This statement comes close on the heels of Narendra Modi returning to Prime Minister's chair for record-equalling third straight term though with a reduced majority.

According to a post on X by the Chinese embassy's spokesperson in India, China also highlighted that a stable relationship is “in the interest of both countries and conducive to peace and development in this region and beyond.”

"China and India are important neighbouring countries. Relevant border issues should be handled properly. A sound and stable #ChinaIndia relationship is in the interest of both countries, and conducive to the peace and development in this region and beyond. China is willing to work with India to push forward bilateral relations in the right direction," the Spokesperson of Chinese Embassy in India wrote.

NEW DELHI: A Chinese national was arrested in Bihar's Muzaffarpur district for allegedly lacking valid travel documents, according to police on Friday. The individual, identified as Li Jiaqi from Shandong province in China, was taken into custody on Thursday near Laxmi Chowk, within the jurisdiction of Brahmapura Police Station, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Rakesh Kumar said.
