no one smokes in the bar
there’s just a jukebox playing new-old tunes
the different accents here
layered over unfamiliar songs
a never-ending game
balls on the table roll
one after another
into dark pockets
in the dark our voices slice open the quiet
silent people finish beers
sound condenses under the lights
no guiding melody
