I name you the older sister of Sodom and Gomorrah
you the baptismal basin that burned Rome
The murdered hum their poems on the hills
and the rebels reproach the tellers of their stories
while I leave the sea behind and come back
to you, come back
with this small river that flows in your despair
I hear the reciters of the Quran and the shrouders of corpses
I hear the dust of the condolers
I am not yet thirty, but you buried me, time and again
and each time, for your sake
I emerge from the earth
So let those who sing your praises go to hell
those who sell souvenirs of your pain
all those who are standing with me, now, in the picture
I name you Medusa

我听说他们强暴了我妻子，随后把她的身体拖下楼梯，扔到大街上
（可是我并没有结婚）
而这，一定是我那副被军靴踩坏的眼镜
（可是我并不戴眼镜）
……
那时我正在父母家中安睡，梦中盼着去她家拜访，可是当我醒来：
我看见我的兄弟姐妹
被挂在
复活教堂的天花板
连主都怜惜地叹道：“这是我的痛苦。”
而我则把所有悬挂者的尊严收好，回答：“不，这是我们的痛苦！”
……
这痛苦灼灼发光，相比梦魇，更为我所喜爱。
……
我绝不会逃去北方
主啊
请你不要把我和那些逃难的人混为一谈
──这个区别我们以后再谈──
现在我该睡觉了
我不想错过那班开往撒布拉和夏蒂拉的梦魇巴士

撒布拉、夏蒂拉为黎巴嫩贝鲁特附近的巴勒斯坦难民聚集地。1982年黎巴嫩内战期间，黎巴嫩基督教民兵组织在此两地犯下大屠杀罪行，受害者多为巴勒斯坦人和黎巴嫩什叶派穆斯林。
The Nightmare Bus to Sabra and Shatila
I saw them stuff my aunts into black plastic bags
the warm blood pooling inside
(but I have no aunts)
I knew they killed Natasha, my three-year-old daughter
(but I have no daughter)
I was told they raped my wife
then dragged her body down the stairs
and left it in the street
(but I never married)
No doubt about it: those are my glasses
crushed beneath their boots
(but I don’t wear glasses)
…
Asleep in my parents’ house, I dreamt
of traveling to see her, and when I woke
I saw my brothers
hanging from the ceiling
of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre
The Lord in His mercy said, “This is my suffering”
and I, gathering up the dignity
of those who were hung
said, “No it’s our own”
…
Now suffering’s glow is dearer
even than my nightmares
…
Lord
I won’t flee to the north—
don’t count me among those seeking refuge
—We’ll settle accounts later—
Time to sleep now
I don’t want to miss
the nightmare bus to Sabra and Shatila

Sabra and Shatila were two Palestinian refugee camps in Beirut. During the Israeli invasion of Lebanon in 1982, a Lebanese Christian militia allied with Israel carried out a massacre of the camps’ residents.
