对当代英语，where限于空间的“哪里”，但在英语演变历史进程中，它也有拓展的in which position or circumstances, 因此whereas的含义是in the circumstances as，也就是“处于.....情形下”，这就是它作为连词而有“鉴于”的缘由。
虽然whereas对比了两个事实，但其目的是为了凸显两个事实中的一个，所以若将它换成but, 在语法上没有问题，可是语义上but所连的两个事实的重要性相等。故而whereas不宜翻与“但是”对应，而应翻译为“尽管”(whereas从句在前)，或"然而”(wheresas 从句在后)。
品读例句：
【例句1】Some of the studies show positive results, whereas others do not. (一些研究显示了积极的结果，而另一些则没有。)[牛津高级学者辞典]

【例句4】Pensions are linked to inflation, whereas they should be linked to the cost of living. （养老金与通货膨胀挂钩，而应与生活成本挂钩。）[柯林斯高级学者辞典]
【例句5】Whereas the population of working age increased by 1 million between 1981 and 1986, today it is barely growing. (尽管在1981年至1986年间，劳动年龄人口增加了100万，但今天几乎没有增长。) [柯林斯高级学者辞典]
【例句6】Whereas most new PCs have several USB slots, older ones often only had one. (虽然大多数新电脑都有几个USB插槽，但旧电脑通常只有一个。)
以上句子的whereas也可以换成while，但是指时间的while不能改成whereas, 如
【例句7】The secretary took care of my appointments while I was away from the office. (当我不在办公室的时候，秘书负责我的约会。)
后半句不可以改成：whereas I was away from the office.
