machine(机器)是可数名词，但machinery不可数。
machinery源自machine, 但前者在十七世纪八十年代刚使用时是舞台行当术语，它指能制造舞台效果的所有器械的汇总，即汉语的“道具汇总”。1731年开始有现代语义的“机械汇总、机械部件汇总”之义。
“机械、道具”大小不一，功能也有所差异，尤其再汇总起来，所以其machinery的典型用法是不可数，如
【例句1】Farmers import most of their machinery and materials. （农民进口大部分机械和材料。） [柯林斯高级学者辞典]
此句的machinery是一个农场的所有机器的汇总。
如果非要说一个机械，可以用a piece of machinery。agricultural/industrial/factory/farm machinery 指具有相应修饰特质的机械汇总。
大型机械也是多个machine的总装，所以machinery也指“大型机械”，如

前面说过machinery最初用来指“制造舞台效果”的器械，所以能让整个设备工作的关键部件汇总也称为machinery, 如

1770年之后，machinery也拓展到非机械系统情形，如政府运转、公司运作、生物行为等，相当于汉语的“体制、系统、组织”，特征在相应的machinery下有戏剧化的功效。例句如
