Last Saturday, Remco Evenepoel, a 24-year-old from the town of Aalst, near Brussels, made history at the 2024 Paris Olympics by becoming the first male cyclist to win gold medals in both the Road Race and Time Trial events.

Evenepoel only just triumphed in Paris a few weeks ago, finishing third in his first Tour de France. Then on 28 July he won the first gold for Belgium in the Time Trial event at the Olympics. Last Saturday he won again, this time in the Road Race, after relentlessly attacking in the final stages, leaving his rivals behind and crossing the finish line first. Afterwards he described his second Olympic victory as a moment he "could only dream of". As a kid he watched the Olympics and saw athletes like Usain Bolt and Michael Phelps receiving their medals and he hoped he would win one too. He also shared his feeling that this time there were more Belgians than French along the road cheering for him. That was a monumental victory. The whole nation is celebrating his extraordinary talents.

Up until 4 August, TEAM BELGIUM has now won 5 medals, two gold for Evenepoel, one bronze for Belgian judoka Gabriella Willems, and other two other bronze medals for the cycling field: Wout van Aert for Men’s Time Trial (yes, the gold and bronze stage both belonged to Belgium that day!) and Lotte Kopecky for Women's Road Race.
