On September 10, 2024, the Ambassadors for Nature initiative proudly celebrated its second anniversary! In two years' time, the initiative has expanded from an original 14 members to 35 today. To commemorate this milestone, Ambassador Bruno Angelet hosted a seminar at the new Belgian Embassy building, in Qian Xiuling Hall.
The Swiss Ambassador, Jurg Burri, shared updates on their new wildlife pond, bat and bird boxes, and rewilding efforts in their embassy compound. The UNDP representative, Beate Trankmann, also discussed their projects on rewilding and bird box installations, while New Zealand's Ambassador, Grahame Morton, detailed their focus on migratory birds along the East Asian-Australasian Flyway. Chris Liu, a student from the Western Academy of Beijing, shared how his school embraced the Pledge for Nature. The keynote address was delivered by Hun Kim, Acting Vice President of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), who spoke about the Bank’s strategy to integrate biodiversity into its operations.
The energy and commitment from the 35 members underscored the growing significance of this initiative. It was clear that by supporting biodiversity, we are ultimately supporting ourselves, given our deep reliance on nature and the vital services it provides.
Looking ahead, there is hope for continued expansion of the initiative, with Brazil participating for the first time at this event. Ambassadors were encouraged to build on their progress to identify new opportunities for promoting biodiversity and to further integrate nature into bilateral and multilateral discussions.
Here’s to a bright and green future!
