Eldest son of King Albert the First and Queen Elisabeth of Belgium, Leopold III always had a keen interest in science. He also, very early on, demonstrated a profound love for nature and a special attraction for tropical forests. As a child, he dreamt of faraway lands, devouring the accounts of explorers, tirelessly studying atlases to mark the places he wanted to visit one day.
That dream started to come true in 1920, when his parents made an official trip to Brazil. Leopold joined them in Sao Paulo, where he visited the Butantan Institute which specialised in the extraction of snakes’ venom. But it is above all the few days he spent on a coffee fazenda that enabled him to discover the tropical forest, whose mysteries fascinated him.

“If there is one subject altogether transcending human horizons, it is undoubtedly the preservation of those everlasting possessions of which we are the temporary guardians responsible to future generations.
Have we any right arbitrarily to alter the natural condition of things, without taking into consideration the results which can be foreseen from our present imperfect knowledge of the universe?
We may excuse the faults committed in the past by our ancestors on account of their ignorance as to the consequences of their acts. But our successors will make no such excuse for us.”

After his abdication in 1951, King Leopold was able to resume his travels. In over 20 years, he explored 24 regions in the Americas, Africa and Asia often accompanied by Belgian experts in natural sciences. As he was also a keen photographer, he took tens of thousands of colour and black and white photographs which are now historical and scientific documents of great value.
In 1972, he created a foundation to promote the study and conservation of nature on a national and international level. From 1973 to 1985, The Leopold III Fund for Nature Exploration and Conservation organised a dozen of big expeditions, several under the direction of its founder. Among those an international expedition in Irian Jaya and one in the Andaman Islands. Between 1976 and 1996, the foundation participated extensively in the creation and operation of permanent biological station on an island close to the north coast of Papua New-Guinea to study corals and marine fauna and flora.

Thanks to the financial, material and moral support of the King Leopold Fund, more than 300 missions have been carried out and more than 600 scientific papers have been written to this day. Under the presidency of Princess Esmeralda the Foundation continues to support Belgian researchers’ projects around the world.
King Leopold was a pioneer of the protection of our environment and the respect of indigenous rights, culture and traditions. He said: “People, aware of their belonging to the earth, respectful of biodiversity, harmony and the balanced use of the natural resources of our planet”.
