Surrounding Chuzhou are mountains.

Among the peaks to the southwest, with their forests and ravines particularly beautiful, the one that looks lush and deeply serene is called Langya.

After walking six or seven miles in the mountains, you gradually hear the murmuring sound of water, which flows out between two peaks; this is the Niangquan Spring.

As the path twists and turns, there is a pavilion that seems to spread its wings over the spring; this is the Drunken Old Man's Pavilion.

Who built the pavilion? It was the monk Zhixian from the mountain.

Who named it? The prefect himself.

The prefect, along with his guests, would come here to drink, and he would get drunk easily with just a little wine, and being the oldest in age, he thus called himself the Drunken Old Man.

The intention of the Drunken Old Man is not in the wine, but in the mountains and waters.

The joy of mountains and waters is found in the heart and expressed in wine.

As for when the sun rises and the forest mist clears, and when the clouds return and the caves and holes darken, these are the changes between light and dark, the dawn and dusk of the mountains.

When wild flowers bloom and emit a faint fragrance, when fine trees grow lush and provide dense shade, when the wind and frost are pure and clear, and when the water recedes to reveal the stones, these are the four seasons of the mountains.

Going in the morning and returning in the evening, the scenery of the four seasons is different, and the joy is endless.

As for those who sing on the road carrying loads, those who rest under the trees, those who call out and those who respond, the old and the young coming and going without end, these are the people of Chuzhou enjoying their leisure.

Fishing by the stream, where the stream is deep and the fish are fat, brewing wine from the spring, where the spring is fragrant and the wine is clear, and presenting a variety of wild dishes, these are the feasts of the prefect.

The joy of the feast is not in strings or bamboo, but in the archers hitting the target, the players winning at chess, the cups and tokens intermingling, and the noise of people standing and sitting, these are the joys of the guests.

The old man with a white beard, collapsed among them, is the prefect drunk.

Then the sun sets behind the mountains, and the shadows of people scatter; the prefect returns followed by his guests.

The trees are shaded, and the sounds of birds are heard up and down; the tourists leave, and the birds and animals rejoice.

然而禽鸟知山林之乐,而不知人之乐;However, the birds and animals know the joy of the mountains and forests, but do not know the joy of humans;

People know the joy of following the prefect, but do not know the prefect's joy in their joy.

He who can share in the joy when drunk and express it in writing when sober is the prefect.

Who is the prefect? Ouyang Xiu of Luling.
