八月,汉王引兵从故道出,袭雍;雍王章邯迎击汉陈仓。In the eighth month, the King of Han led his troops out through the old pass to launch a surprise attack on Yong. Zhang Han, the King of Yong, went to meet the Han army at Chencang.
雍兵败,还走;止,战好畤,又败,走废丘。The troops of Yong were defeated and retreated. They stopped and fought again at Haozhi, and were defeated once more, fleeing to Feiqiu.
汉王遂定雍地,东至咸阳,引兵围雍王于废丘,而遣诸将略地。Thereupon, the King of Han occupied the territory of Yong. He advanced eastward to Xianyang and then led his troops to besiege the King of Yong in Feiqiu while dispatching his generals to seize other territories.
塞王欣、翟王翳皆降,以其地为渭南、河上、上郡。The King of Sai, Sima Xin, and the King of Zhai, Dong Yi, both surrendered. Their territories were then made into Weinan, Heshan, and Shangjun.
将军薛欧、王吸出武关,因王陵兵以迎太公、吕后。Generals Xue Ou and Wang Xi led their troops out of Wuguan. Relying on the troops of Wang Ling, they planned to welcome the Grandfather of the King of Han (Liu Bang's father) and Empress Lü.
项王闻之,发兵距之阳夏,不得前。When the King of Chu (Xiang Yu) heard of this, he dispatched troops to block them at Yangxia, preventing them from advancing.
王陵者,沛人也,先聚党数千人,居南阳,至是始以兵属汉。Wang Ling was from Pei. He had first gathered a group of several thousand men and settled in Nanyang. It was only at this time that he submitted his troops to the King of Han.
项王取陵母置军中,陵使至,则东乡坐陵母,欲以招陵。Xiang Yu took Wang Ling's mother and placed her in the army. When Wang Ling's envoy arrived, Xiang Yu had Wang Ling's mother sit facing east, intending to use her to persuade Wang Ling to defect.
陵母私送使者,泣曰:“愿为老妾语陵:善事汉王,汉王长者,终得天下,毋以老妾故持二心。妾以死送使者!”Wang Ling's mother privately sent off the envoy, weeping and saying, "Please tell my son on my behalf: Serve the King of Han well. The King of Han is a noble man and will eventually gain the whole world. Don't be of two minds because of me. I will see off the envoy with my life!"
遂伏剑而死。项王怒,烹陵母。Then she committed suicide by falling on her sword. Xiang Yu was enraged and had Wang Ling's mother boiled alive.
项王以故吴令郑昌为韩王,以距汉。Xiang Yu appointed Zheng Chang, the former magistrate of Wu, as the King of Han to resist the King of Han.
张良遗项王书曰:“汉王失职,欲得关中,如约即止,不敢东。”Zhang Liang sent a letter to Xiang Yu, saying, "The King of Han has lost his original position and merely wishes to obtain the land within the Pass. Once he gets it as agreed, he will stop and dare not march eastward."
又以齐、梁反书遗项王曰:“齐欲与赵并灭楚。”项王以此故无西意,而北击齐。He also sent letters about the rebellions in Qi and Liang to Xiang Yu, saying, "Qi intends to join with Zhao to destroy Chu." For this reason, Xiang Yu had no intention of marching westward but instead attacked Qi in the north.
燕王广不肯之辽东,臧荼击杀之,并其地。Yan Wang Guang refused to go to Liaodong. Zang Tu attacked and killed him and annexed his territory.
是岁,以内史沛周苛为御史大夫。In this year, Zhou Ke from Pei, who was the Intendant of the Capital, was appointed as the Censor-in-Chief.
项王使趣义帝行,其群臣、左右稍稍叛之。Xiang Yu sent people to urge Emperor Yi to leave quickly. Gradually, many of his ministers and attendants deserted him.
太祖高皇帝上之上二年(丙申,公元前二零五年)The second year of Emperor Gaozu of the Han Dynasty (the year of Bingshen, 205 BC)
冬,十月,项王密使九江、衡山、临江王击义帝,杀之江中。In winter, in the tenth month, Xiang Yu secretly sent the Kings of Jiujiang, Hengshan, and Linjiang to attack Emperor Yi and killed him in the middle of the river.
陈馀悉三县兵,与齐兵共袭常山。Chen Yu mustered all the troops from three counties and, together with the troops from Qi, launched a surprise attack on Changshan.
常山王张耳败,走汉,谒汉王于废丘,汉王厚遇之。Zhang Er, the King of Changshan, was defeated and fled to the King of Han. He paid his respects to the King of Han at Feiqiu, and the King of Han treated him generously.
陈馀迎赵王于代,复为赵王。赵王德陈馀,立以为代王。Chen Yu welcomed the King of Zhao from Dai and restored him to the throne of the King of Zhao. The King of Zhao was grateful to Chen Yu and appointed him as the King of Dai.
陈馀为赵王弱,国初定,不之国,留傅赵王;而使夏说以相国守代。Chen Yu thought that the King of Zhao was still weak and that the kingdom had just been established, so he did not go to his fief but stayed to assist the King of Zhao. He sent Xia Shuo to guard Dai as the Chancellor.
张良自韩间行归汉,汉王以为成信侯。Zhang Liang secretly returned to the King of Han from Han. The King of Han made him Marquis of Chengxin.
良多病,未尝特将,常为画策臣,时时从汉王。Zhang Liang was often ill and had never led troops independently. He was usually a counselor who devised strategies and often accompanied the King of Han.
汉王如陕,镇抚关外父老。The King of Han went to Shan and comforted the elders outside the Pass.
河南王申阳降,置河南郡。Shen Yang, the King of Henan, surrendered. The King of Han established Henan Prefecture there.
汉王以韩襄王孙信为韩太尉,将兵略韩地。The King of Han appointed Xin, the grandson of King Xiang of Han, as the Grand Marshal of Han and led troops to seize the territory of Han.
信急击韩王昌于阳城,昌降。十一月,立信为韩王,常将韩兵从汉王。Xin launched a fierce attack on Zheng Chang, the King of Han, at Yangcheng. Zheng Chang surrendered. In November, the King of Han appointed Xin as the King of Han. Xin often led the troops of Han to follow the King of Han.
汉王还都栎阳。The King of Han returned to make his capital at Liyang.
诸将拔陇西。The generals captured Longxi.
春,正月,项王北至城阳。齐王荣将兵会战,败,走平原,平原民杀之。项王复立田假为齐王。In spring, in the first month, Xiang Yu marched northward to Chengyang. Tian Rong, the King of Qi, led his troops to engage in battle but was defeated and fled to Pingyuan. The people of Pingyuan killed him. Xiang Yu then reappointed Tian Jia as the King of Qi.
遂北至北海,烧夷城郭、室屋,坑田荣降卒,系虏其老弱、妇女,所过多所残灭。齐民相聚叛之。He then marched northward to Beihai, burning down city walls and houses, burying alive the surrendered soldiers of Tian Rong, and taking captive the old, the weak, women and children. Everywhere he passed, much destruction was caused. The people of Qi gathered together and rebelled against him.
汉将拔北地,虏雍王弟平。The Han generals captured Beidi and captured the younger brother of the King of Yong, named Ping.
三月,汉王自临晋渡河。魏王豹降,将兵从;下河内,虏殷王卬,置河内郡。In March, the King of Han crossed the Yellow River from Linjin. Wei Bao, the King of Wei, surrendered and led troops to follow. They conquered Henei and captured Yin Ang, the King of Yin, and established Henei Prefecture there.
初,阳武人陈平,家贫,好读书。里中社,平为宰,分肉食甚均。Originally, Chen Ping from Yangwu was from a poor family but was fond of reading. At the village sacrifice, Chen Ping was in charge of dividing the sacrificial meat, and he divided it very evenly.
父老曰:“善,陈孺子之为宰!”平曰:“嗟乎,使平得宰天下,亦如是肉矣!”The elders said, "Good! The way Chen Ping is in charge!" Chen Ping said, "Alas! If I could be in charge of the whole world, I would divide it like this piece of meat!"
及诸侯叛秦,平事魏王咎于临济,为太仆,说魏王,不听。人或谗之,平亡去。When the feudal lords rebelled against Qin, Chen Ping served Wei Jiu, the King of Wei, at Linji, as the Grand Steward. He tried to persuade the King of Wei, but was not listened to. Someone slandered him, and he fled.
后事项羽,赐爵为卿。殷王反楚,项羽使平击降之。还,拜为都尉,赐金二十镒。居无何,汉王攻下殷。Later, he served Xiang Yu and was granted the title of a nobleman. When the King of Yin rebelled against Chu, Xiang Yu sent Chen Ping to defeat and subdue him. After returning, he was appointed as a Commandant and was given twenty yi of gold. Not long after, the King of Han captured Yin.
项王怒,将诛定殷将吏。平惧,乃封其金与印,使使归项王;Xiang Yu was angry and was about to execute the generals and officials who had subdued Yin. Chen Ping was afraid and sealed up the gold and his seal and sent an envoy to return them to Xiang Yu.
而挺身间行,杖剑亡,渡河,归汉王于脩武,因魏无知求见汉王。Then he slipped away secretly, walking with a sword in hand, crossed the river, and returned to the King of Han at Xiuwu. He asked to see the King of Han through Wei Wuzhi.
汉王召入,赐食,遣罢就舍。平曰:“臣为事来,所言不可以过今日。”于是汉王与语而说之。The King of Han summoned him in, gave him food, and then dismissed him to go to his quarters. Chen Ping said, "I have come for a matter, and what I have to say cannot wait until tomorrow." So the King of Han talked with him and was pleased with him.
问曰:“子之居楚何官?”曰:“为都尉。”是日,即拜平为都尉,使为参乘,典护军。He asked, "What office did you hold in Chu?" Chen Ping said, "I was a Commandant." That day, the King of Han immediately appointed Chen Ping as a Commandant, made him his attendant in the carriage, and put him in charge of the guards.
诸将尽讙曰:“大王一日得楚之亡卒,未知其高下,而即与同载,反使监护长者!”汉王闻之,愈益幸平。All the generals were greatly astonished and said, "The King has obtained a deserter from Chu in one day. He doesn't even know his abilities yet, but he immediately makes him ride in the same carriage and even puts him in charge of guarding the elders!" When the King of Han heard this, he became even more fond of Chen Ping.
