The Yellow Emperor asked: Do women without beards have no qi and blood?

Qi Bo replied: The Chong Meridian and the Ren Meridian both originate from the uterus. They ascend along the back and are the sea of meridians and collaterals. Their superficial branches ascend along the right side of the abdomen, meet at the throat, and then branch out to connect with the lips and mouth.

When qi and blood are abundant, they fill the skin and warm the muscles. When blood is particularly abundant, it seeps through the skin thinly and gives rise to fine hairs.

In the case of women, they have an excess of qi but a deficiency of blood because they often lose blood. The Chong and Ren meridians do not nourish the lips and mouth, so beards do not grow.

The Yellow Emperor asked: When a scholar is injured in the yin aspect, the yin qi is exhausted and cannot rise, and the yin function is disabled. However, his beard does not fall off. Why is that? Why do eunuchs alone lose their beards? I would like to know the reason.

Qi Bo replied: Eunuchs have their penis removed, which injures the Chong Meridian. The blood is drained and cannot be restored. The skin becomes knotted internally, and the lips and mouth are not nourished internally, so beards do not grow.

The Yellow Emperor asked: There are those who are congenitally impotent. They have never been injured and do not lose blood. However, their beards do not grow. Why is that?

Qi Bo replied: This is due to an insufficiency of nature. Their Ren and Chong meridians are not prosperous, their penis is not formed, there is qi but no blood, and the lips and mouth are not nourished, so beards do not grow.

The Yellow Emperor said: How wonderful! The sages' understanding of all things is like the light and shadow of the sun and moon, or the sound of a drum. By hearing the sound, one can know the shape. If it were not for you, sir, who could clarify the essence of all things?

Therefore, sages observe people's complexion. Those with yellowish or reddish complexion have more heat qi. Those with bluish or whitish complexion have less heat qi. Those with black complexion have more blood and less qi.

Those with beautiful eyebrows have more blood in the Taiyang Meridian. Those with long beards and mustaches have more blood in the Shaoyang Meridian. Those with beautiful beards have more blood in the Yangming Meridian. This is the way it is.

The normal conditions of people are as follows: The Taiyang Meridian usually has more blood and less qi. The Shaoyang Meridian usually has more qi and less blood. The Yangming Meridian usually has more blood and more qi.

The Jueyin Meridian usually has more qi and less blood. The Shaoyin Meridian usually has more blood (in some versions, written as qi) and less qi (in some versions, written as blood). The Taiyin Meridian usually has more blood and less qi. These are the constants of nature.
