Miraculous Pivot·On the Generation of Dreams by Pathogenic Factors
黄帝曰：愿闻淫邪泮衍，奈何？The Yellow Emperor said: I would like to hear about how pathogenic factors spread and cause trouble.
岐伯曰：“正邪从外袭内，而未有定舍，反淫于臓，不得定处，与营卫俱行，而与魂魄飞扬，使人卧不得安而喜梦；Qi Bo said: "When the pathogenic factors from outside invade the inside but have not yet settled in a fixed place, they instead spread to the internal organs without a definite location. They move along with the nutrient qi and defensive qi, causing the hun (ethereal soul) and po (corporeal soul) to be agitated, making people unable to sleep peacefully and prone to having dreams.
气淫于腑，则有余于外，不足于内；气淫于臓，则有余于内，不足于外。”When the qi spreads to the fu-organs, there will be an excess on the outside and a deficiency on the inside; when the qi spreads to the zang-organs, there will be an excess on the inside and a deficiency on the outside."
黄帝曰：有余不足，有形乎？The Yellow Emperor asked: Do these excesses and deficiencies have any manifestations?
岐伯曰：“阴气盛，则梦涉大水而恐惧；阳气盛，则梦大火而燔爇；阴阳俱盛，则梦相杀。Qi Bo said: "When yin qi is excessive, one will dream of wading through large waters and feel frightened; when yang qi is excessive, one will dream of huge fires and being burned; when both yin and yang are excessive, one will dream of people killing each other.
上盛则梦飞，下盛则梦堕。甚饥则梦取，甚饱则梦予。When the upper part of the body has an excess, one will dream of flying; when the lower part has an excess, one will dream of falling. When extremely hungry, one will dream of taking food; when extremely full, one will dream of giving food away.
肝气盛，则梦怒；肺气盛，则梦恐惧、哭泣、飞扬；心气盛，则梦善笑恐畏；When liver qi is excessive, one will dream of being angry; when lung qi is excessive, one will dream of being frightened, crying, and flying; when heart qi is excessive, one will dream of laughing a lot and being fearful;
脾气盛，则梦歌乐、身体重不举；肾气盛，则梦腰脊两解不属。凡此十二盛者，至而泻之，立已。When spleen qi is excessive, one will dream of singing and dancing, and feeling that the body is too heavy to lift; when kidney qi is excessive, one will dream of the lumbar spine and back being separated and disjointed. For all these twelve cases of excess, once treated by purging, the symptoms will disappear immediately.
厥气客于心，则梦见丘山烟火；客于肺，则梦飞扬，见金铁之奇物；When the reversed qi lodges in the heart, one will dream of hills and mountains with smoke and fire; when it lodges in the lung, one will dream of flying and seeing strange objects made of gold and iron;
客于肝，则梦山林树木；客于脾，则梦见丘陵大泽，坏屋风雨；When it lodges in the liver, one will dream of mountain forests and trees; when it lodges in the spleen, one will dream of hills and large marshes, and dilapidated houses in the wind and rain;
客于肾，则梦临渊，没居水中；客于膀胱，则梦游行；When it lodges in the kidney, one will dream of standing on the edge of a deep pool and being submerged in water; when it lodges in the bladder, one will dream of wandering around;
客于胃，则梦饮食；客于大肠，则梦田野；客于小肠，则梦聚邑冲衢；When it lodges in the stomach, one will dream of eating and drinking; when it lodges in the large intestine, one will dream of fields; when it lodges in the small intestine, one will dream of crowded towns and busy streets;
客于胆，则梦斗讼自刳；客于阴器，则梦接内；客于项，则梦斩首；When it lodges in the bile duct, one will dream of fighting, arguing, and cutting oneself open; when it lodges in the genital organs, one will dream of sexual intercourse; when it lodges in the neck, one will dream of having one's head cut off;
客于胫，则梦行走而不能前，及居深地窌苑中；客于股肱，则梦礼节拜起；客于胞䐈，则梦溲便。When it lodges in the shins, one will dream of walking but unable to move forward, and being in a deep and secluded place; when it lodges in the thighs and upper arms, one will dream of performing ceremonial bows and getting up; when it lodges in the bladder and uterus, one will dream of urinating and defecating.
凡此十五不足者，至而补之立已也。”For all these fifteen cases of deficiency, once treated by tonifying, the symptoms will disappear immediately."
