I happened to find a blog initiating a new English learning method. The essence of the method, in my mind, is the utilization of electronic dictionaries in extensive reading of authentic English novels. I can't agree more with the initiator that reading widely and extensively is an effective way of learning English. I used to dissuade my students from using electronic dictionaries of any kind for the reason that students tend to overuse them in their reading, and therefore, make reading unauthentic and impossible to apply the proper reading skills in reading. Still, I was greatly impressed by his idea of how to use electronic dictionary sensibly in reading.
Augustus, the promotor of dialysis approach, triggers my reflections on the irreversible penetration of modern technology in every corner of our life. Just as Stephen Hawking, author of "Understanding Science" says, it is up to us to make changes head towards changing our lives for the better. Similarly, "People must understand that science is inherently neither a potential for good nor for evil. It is a potential to be harnessed by man to do his bidding."It is obvious that the potential use and the functions of electronic dictionaries are still to be tapped in the future.
