When you mention "rights," what comes to mind? For children, their name, the freedom to play, and the act of walking into school with a backpack are all basic rights they should enjoy. In the PYP third-grade unit "Who We Are," the children embarked on a journey of inner exploration, delving into the warm and sunny concept of children's rights and learning how to care for their peers.

In this unit, the children focused on six rights: "food, water, education, healthcare, play, and shelter." Through detailed discussions, they discovered the struggles faced by children who lack these fundamental rights. Through group collaboration, station experiments, and vibrant mind maps, their learning became dynamic, presenting a rich tapestry of their deep understanding of rights.

At the same time, the children learned about the importance of social organizations and how various domestic and international organizations help children facing different challenges. Seizing this opportunity, the third-grade teachers, in collaboration with the Beijing Royal School International Project Office, invited Director Chen Shuyun, founder of Shuyun Rehabilitation, to give a unique lecture to the children.

As a social organization, Shuyun Rehabilitation has been working on the frontlines of rehabilitation education, helping children with hearing and language impairments. During the lecture, Director Chen guided the children into the world of hearing-impaired children, sharing unseen sounds and emotions, helping them realize that there is such a group of people around them. Through an engaging game, students experienced the loneliness and helplessness of not being able to hear words by wearing earplugs. A special guest, a four-year-old hearing-impaired child named Xiaobao, also joined the lecture. Director Chen showcased the hearing aids and cochlear implants Xiaobao uses, prompting many questions from the students, particularly about how these high-tech devices enable Xiaobao to hear the sounds of the world. After class, the students showed their caring nature by sharing toys with Xiaobao, and two representatives from the third grade presented him with small gifts.

This lecture not only broadened the children's horizons but also ignited their inner compassion and sense of responsibility. Every small act of care can ignite a spark of hope for others. The children began to express gratitude towards their parents and everyone around them, cherishing their health and happiness. They then independently created comics and stories about children's rights, pouring their thoughts and feelings onto the page, as if weaving warm tales with their words.

The children understood that true rights are not only about enjoyment but also about listening to and supporting those who live in the shadows. By remembering Xiaobao's story, they planted seeds of compassion and kindness in their hearts. In the days to come, they will view the world with a broader perspective, taking action to defend the rights of others and embody the warmth and care that belong to humanity.

As they continue their learning journey, may each child carry a gentle yet steadfast heart, paying attention to every life story and becoming an active agent of change. Just as a trickling stream gathers into an ocean, every act of kindness by the children will pave a brighter and more hopeful path for the future of society. Let us join hands on this road filled with love and responsibility, building a more just and equal world together.
