Last week, Grade 5 students from Beijing Royal Experimental School embarked on an enriching educational excursion to the Museum of Chinese Medicine. The visit was part of their ongoing Unit of Inquiry (UOI) titled Who We Are, which focuses on well-being and health. Students explored the historical roots of traditional Chinese medicine, gaining insights into how ancient healing practices continue to influence modern approaches to health and well-being.

The trip began with a captivating introduction to the legend of Shennong, the first Chinese healer, who is said to have tested the medicinal properties of plants and animals. This story set the stage for students to appreciate how ancient knowledge about nature’s remedies played a vital role in early health practices.

Following the legend, students learned about the various methods of storing medicine in ancient times. They were shown beautifully crafted containers used to preserve herbs and medicines, keeping their healing properties intact. This part of the visit connected directly to the students’ inquiry into how health choices affect well-being.

One of the highlights of the excursion was a detailed exploration of ginseng, a plant long regarded for its powerful medical qualities. Students learned how ginseng has been used for centuries to boost energy and support overall health, tying in with their classroom discussions about physical well-being and energy.

The philosophical core of Chinese medicine was another focal point of the visit. Students discovered how the ancient practice views the human body as deeply connected to nature, and that achieving harmony between body and environment is essential for maintaining health. This philosophy aligns with the Grade 5 exploration of mental and social-emotional well-being, reinforcing the idea that health is a balance of many factors.

The students were particularly intrigued by acupuncture, one of the more widely recognized aspects of Chinese medicine. Although no treatments were administered, students were introduced to the concept of acupuncture and how it works to stimulate the body’s healing processes.

To wrap up the visit, students had the unique opportunity to create their own medical bags filled with traditional Chinese herbs. This hands-on activity allowed them to apply what they had learned about ancient medicine, giving them a deeper understanding of how the body, health, and nature are interconnected.

The visit to the Museum of Chinese Medicine was not only informative but also reinforced the students’ understanding of well-being, a central theme of their UOI Who We Are. As they continue to explore different factors that contribute to well-being, this experience will undoubtedly leave a lasting impression, encouraging them to think critically about their health and lifestyle choices.
