Integrative Physiology and Brain-Body Interactions

Central Regulation of Energy Metabolism

Organizer: Yu-Dong Zhou,Hao Wang

Introduction: The central nervous system is a master regulator of various physiological functions including energy metabolism. Complex central mechanisms have evolved to regulate energy intake and expenditure to maintain energy homeostasis. The goal of the symposium is to provide an overview across the latest developments on the central regulation and central-peripheral interactions in energy metabolism spanning from metabolic sensing, feeding, and maintaning energy homeostasis. The symposium will provide insights into the neural circuits and mechanisms, as well as genetics and lifestyle underlying energy metabolism, and will focus on the latest advances on metabolic conditions such as obesity that result from energy imbalance.

Functional Interaction Between the Brain and Peripheral Organs at Systemic Level

Organizer: Liping Wang,Fan Yang

Introduction: The neural mechanism of the interaction between the brain and peripheral multiple systems is one of the most important cutting-edge scientific issues in systemic physiology and neuroscience research. In recent years, research has found that the central nervous system plays an important role in regulating body temperature, blood glucose metabolism, bone metabolism, immunity, endocrine and other functions. This topic will focus on the functional interaction and underlying mechanisms between the brain and peripheral organs, with systemic integration as an important direction. Eminent scientists from all levels in this field will be invited to jointly discuss the latest progress of central neural regulation of peripheral functions, including metabolism, immune response, endocrine at cellular and circuit level. This symposium is of great significance for the development of systemic neuroscience.

The Brain-gut Axis in Health and Disease

Organizer: Jiawei Zhou,Jian-Guo CHEN

Introduction: In neuroscience, the most studies have been focused on the nervous system itself but to some extends, the interactions between the nervous system and peripheral tissue and organs has been ignored in the last several decades. Recently, the brain body physiology becomes an emerging field of research, demonstrating that the brain not only control various activities of the peripheral tissue and organs, but it is also influenced by a variety of factors outside brain. However, the two-ways interactions remain largely unknown under physiological and pathological conditions. The goal of this proposed symposium is to bring people working in this field together to discuss the most recent progress in understanding the complex interplay between the brain and peripheral organs, emphasizing the brain-gut axis in health and disease. Moreover, this proposed symposium will show the audience, in particular graduate students, emerging field in neuroscience.
