You will both benefit from your vacation.

Sensuous pleasure will do you both much good during your vacation, a sensuous and psychic immersion into the patterns of nature will refresh you both.

Because of your particular constitutions, small vacations should definitely become a part of your yearly existence; and when you expect them, the means for them will come. But faith must be shown.

In your cases, at the very least one weekend a month should be set aside for sensuous immersion in the patterns of nature, when usual practical considerations are dispensed with. The refreshment will more than make up for "time lost". I am not necessarily speaking of extended journeys. The details will be your own, of course.

Actually however, physical extension in space, in terms of even short journeys, will help to expand your psychic and mental horizons, and will help compensate for other freedoms that your house would have provided.

I do have a suggestion, and a suggestion only, for Joseph. Tomorrow afternoon I suggest a long, carefree, refreshing and solitary walk in the afternoon usually devoted to painting time.

As you walk, become sensuously involved with the trees, landscape in general and colors, and if possible lose yourself in their fragrance and vitality. Breathe deeply physically, let your organism feel its involvement, and complicated intertwining, with the physical environment itself.

This is a most enjoyable and beneficial way of psychic relaxation and renewal. Do not be concerned with physical time. Do not overdo. Come home before you are tired. Forget if possible all personal egotistical considerations, feeling only psychic unity. You will be amazed at how this will help.

This sort of experience is much more practical when used before you are really driven to it, and you are not at that point by any means. Things then will fall into place.

One day as an absolute minimum, preferably two a month, should be given to animal involvement with the elements, and this will balance your psychic lives and increase your perceptions and your work.

You will find that the sort of focus, the particularized focus achieved in the free contemplation and enjoyment of nature, is a welcome change from the dissociated focus aimed at to some degree in psychic pursuits.

Physical activity will be good. Any creative physical improvements in the apartment will help.

Your physical nature is, as I have told you, an approximation and materialization of inner reality on a physical level. Therefore, such simple activities as walking in the rain, lying upon grass, walking in windy weather, all represent gateways to psychic experience.

I am not minimizing the necessity or power of intellect, but any activity in which the individual momentarily forgets the props of identity, and immerses himself, such an activity allows him to dispense with the practical limitations inherent in a closed system, and refreshes his psychic ability.

Indeed, your own moments of so-called inspiration in your work, will be seen to follow such periods of immersion, from which the subconscious then acquires its inspiration. Any purposes you would like to achieve should be mentioned to the subconscious before such periods of sensuous immersion or contemplation, and then forgotten on a conscious level.

Too great a conscious focus upon these purposes gives a negative reaction of doubt and anxiety. I am not saying that you should not be at all consciously concerned with your purposes. A reminder to the subconscious as to your purposes, whether they are psychic or practical, will be most helpful before immersion such as a walk, and so forth.

Sensual immersion implies dropping momentarily the barriers between the ego and what the ego is enjoying. This should be simple enough to follow, and the information given this evening will be of much value.

The spontaneity of psychic experience cannot be stressed too strongly, and you will find it again following these directions I have given you. They represent the second step, as the initial experiments in psychological time represented the first. They should be taken up again, and alternated with the above directions, according to your development.

This is one of the main reasons why I suggested as a rule, at least one day if not two, a month, spent away from the familiar apartment props, and in short trips. The details are not important and need not cost much expense.

If a car were not available even long walks through various parts of town, with say lunch in various strange dining places, would do. Traveling itself with the change of environment, and with the right attitude, tends to ease and facilitate psychic transformations. If traveling is carried out also with the immersion into enjoyment of which I have spoken, then the benefits are twofold.

Concerning our friend Ruburt…because of his rather intense mental work, I would suggest walks and other physical activities. Ruburt is already involving himself, again, in the satisfying for him diversified household chores, which are also a break from strict mental work. Even in winter time I will suggest he take walks, and these should be for pure enjoyment. Hammering at his subconscious as he does on his few walks negates their purpose. Too much of a good thing. After all, his subconscious would like some rest too.

A complete change from intense focus outward to intense focus inward is most beneficial, but this does not mean that every few minutes found available be spent in psychological time experiments. Brisk walks should be a daily part of Ruburt’s schedule in any case, and walking also refreshes the inner self.

As his abilities do develop, it is even more important that he take walks, and that some frequency in daily contact with others is maintained. I do not mean daily social hours. Now and then experiments with guests are fine. However, his energies on weekends as a rule should be more outgoing, and I am sorry that it has been necessary to curtail your dancing activities. Going out is an excellent way of recharging energies, by contrast.

Spontaneous short humorous plays, such as you sometimes do with your recorder, is an enjoyable relaxation. I am not saying that you should not talk about our sessions or allied subjects with friends, only that one night or sometimes two, of social discourse should certainly contain some more outward enjoyments. It would do Ruburt no harm either to resume his painting. His time as a rule is very busily engaged, and usually with mental work. It is all the more important therefore that his leisure have some outward aspect to it, and when possible of an active nature.

There are many freedoms, Joseph, that you will learn to allow yourself. You must not allow yourself to become constricted, for in constriction there is no expansion and little creativity. The daily walk that you plan is not only an excellent idea, but had you carried this through in the past, there is a good possibility that you would not have become ill. For there is that in the physical nature of your field that is automatically refreshing and renewing.

——The Early Sessions: Book 3 Session 145 April 12, 1965

I believe I should once again suggest, Joseph, a daily short walk for you. Such suggestions may appear trivial, yet they are not, and will prove most beneficial. There is indeed a value fulfillment within the enjoyment of nature that can release you from many restraints.

The experiments that you have done in projection were most beneficial to you in the past. Throw your consciousness outward into nature, and your inwardness will be replenished. The power and necessity to feel is a strong necessity within all planes. I have never suggested to you that you close off from this.
