前言
“On or about December 1910 human character changed. ...All human relations have shifted—those between masters and servants, husbands and wives, parents and children. And when human relations change there is at the same time a change in religion, conduct, politics, and literature.”
—Virginia Woolf, “Mr Bennet and Mrs Brown” (1924)

Fly by Those Nets”: Stephen Dedalus’ Ambivalence towards English in A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man
“飞越那些网”:《一个青年艺术家的画像》中斯蒂芬·迪达勒斯对英语的矛盾态度
摘要:
A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man depicts the self-construction of the young artist, Stephen Dedalus. Despite his Irish identity, Stephen uses English as his tool to craft an artistic path of his own. This essay examines how Stephen’s attitude towards English evolves through time, and how such ambivalence reflects his broader quest for artistic freedom. While initially attracted to English by its poetic potential that expresses an authentic self and transcends the mundane, he later discovers how it is limited within the framework of religion and nationality. In order to break free from those “nets” of societal identities to achieve authenticity and transcendence, Stephen eventually chooses to embrace the foreignness of English language, positioning it as the metaphorical wing that, while imperfect, enables his artistic spirit to soar.

Epiphanies in A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man
In A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, James Joyce portrays the growth of a young boy called Stephen, who lives in an Irish-Catholic environment. By tracing his psychological development, Joyce allows us to see this gifted young man’s transformation from a child questing to make sense of the world around him, to a young artist achieving spiritual satisfaction. Yet growing up is never easy. Through epiphany, a sudden revelation of the inner truth combining with a visual moment, Stephen deals with his inner doubts about reality and the demands made on him by his nation, religion, family and friends. Thus, it is only by analyzing those significant moments can we understand how Stephen eventually discovers his artistic identity.

Only Connect”?: The Significance of Places in Howards End
“家”的联结:《霍华德庄园》中空间与家园的重要性
摘要:
In E. M. Forster’s Howards End, however much the clash of social classes makes the connection less convincing to the readers, it is a novel about how places, especially Howards End, make the connection imaginable. Places hold significant importance for individuals, especially in modern times. Howards End shows its significance by the route it comes into the possession of the central character, Margaret Schlegel. It stands for a life path closed to the class outsiders, but more importantly, it embodies people's values, builds interpersonal relationships, and carries the past to the future.
