Advancing Patient Safety Through Enhanced Diagnostics

As the crisp breeze of September sweeps through, we mark the arrival of 2024's World Patient Safety Day, initiated by the World Health Organization (WHO). This year's theme, "Improving diagnosis for patient safety," serves as a global healthcare directive and echoes the core mission that United Family Healthcare (UFH) has long upheld. On this day, we reaffirm our commitment and are eager to showcase the relentless efforts and concrete actions we've taken to realize this goal.

In the realm of healthcare, accurate diagnosis stands as the cornerstone of successful treatment. We know that every diagnosis is intrinsically linked to a patient's health and safety. Therefore, UFH is dedicated to:

Elevating Diagnostic Accuracy and Timeliness

By continuously integrating state-of-the-art medical equipment and technologies, we strive to enhance diagnostic precision.

Our Ultrasound Department has introduced several new equipment systems allowing for higher quality imaging, greater accuracy, and patient convenience. This includes the ability to observe the position and size of lesions from multiple directions and angles using 3D imaging for more accurate breast ultrasounds and non-invasive abilities to quantify the severity of fat tissue. It also includes the integration of image capturing, report editing, and case tracking to assist ultrasound physicians in making clinical judgments.

Radiology has also added a number of advanced devices that integrate biotechnology, intelligent sensor technology, and computer AI to greatly optimize a patient's examination experience. The equipment offers clear advantages in the diagnosis of tumors, acute cerebral infarction, and bleeding in brain tumor areas. It's also radiation-free, allowing for the safe imaging of more patients, including those in the later stages of pregnancy.

Breaking Barriers for Interdisciplinary Collaboration

We foster cross-disciplinary team cooperation to ensure patients receive comprehensive, integrated diagnostic and treatment recommendations. Our expert team, spanning specialties such as internal medicine, surgery, anesthesiology, pathology, and radiology, has established mechanisms for routine multidisciplinary discussions on cancer, perioperative care, and complex cases, collectively delivering the most precise diagnoses.

This multidisciplinary approach not only reduces the risk of misdiagnosis and missed diagnoses but also prevents the need for patients to repeatedly visit different departments, saving them time, energy, and financial costs, thereby enhancing the efficiency of treatment.

The Oncology Center expands on the multidisciplinary concept to also offer international teleconsultation services, matching foreign expert resources according to the specific needs of patients and arranging video or written remote consultations between foreign experts and United Family Hospital's oncologists. The remote consultation experts come from top-five ranked comprehensive or top-five ranked cancer specialty medical institutions in the United States, including specialists in medical oncology, surgery, radiation therapy, pathology, and other disciplines. Patients can enjoy world-leading medical treatment without leaving the country under the care and protection of the United Family Hospital's medical team.

Encouraging Patient Engagement

We actively involve and invite patients and their families to participate in the medical decision-making process, jointly enhancing the accuracy and safety of diagnostics. We have developed patient education materials in an accessible format, such as guidelines for the use of common medications, preparatory procedures for endoscopies, and post-operative considerations, ensuring patients fully understand their health status and treatment plans. We encourage patients to raise any concerns regarding their care.

Implementing Total Quality Management

Through routine internal audits and quality control, we ensure our diagnostic services consistently meet domestic and international standards. UFH's laboratory, blood bank, and pathology department have adhered to domestic and international quality benchmarks, achieving consecutive successful accreditations by the College of American Pathologists (CAP) nine times.

To improve ultrasound report quality, UFH's ultrasound department has established a quality control team that meticulously reviews every report issued daily. This mechanism has received commendations from industry peers.

Our quality management team regularly inspects medical procedures and monitors quality outcomes, underpinning precise diagnosis with a robust quality management system.

United Family Healthcare Internal Accreditation is a process to ensure medical quality and patient safety, as well as the effective operation of the hospital, by certifying and evaluating each hospital and clinic within the United Family Healthcare network. This process ensures the hospital's continuous focus and efforts on international medical quality standards and domestic core policies for medical quality and safety. Hospitals can identify potential issues and opportunities for improvement through the internal audit process, formulate corresponding action plans, and enhance quality levels, practicing precision medicine.

We understand that medical safety is a continuous journey, one on which UFH is committed to leading the way. United Family Healthcare looks forward to collaborating with you to create a safer, healthier medical environment.
