Welcome to Cultivating Health, an opportunity to explore various topics in the context of holistic health and well-being. Each week Melissa Rodriguez, our Patient Outreach and Education Manager, will host a free online session that aims to bring greater awareness to the ways we can take our health to the next level. Each session will include self-care practices such as breathing exercises, mindfulness techniques, and meditation. You will leave the session feeling empowered, motivated, and with a sense of tranquility.
·What?·
As we celebrated World Mental Health Day (October 10) yesterday, Cultivating Health will dedicate the month of October to mental health topics. It is estimated that in 2024, mental health problems affect more than 800 million people worldwide and that nearly half of the world's population will develop a mental health disorder at some point in their lifetime. We also know that during and after the pandemic, the overall prevalence of mental distress increased sharply and that young people are being increasingly affected by emotional, relational, and behavioral problems.

At the same time, stigma against the mentally ill continues to
affect the lives of millions of patients and their families, parity in service
provisions between physical health and mental health is still a long way away.
Equitable access to treatment and services varies hugely by country, with many
regions of the world being under-resourced. In October, we will cover a wide range
of interesting topics related to mental health and mental illness, emotional
stability, healthy relationships, and cultivating mental health across the life
span.
Our topic this week is adolescence and mental health. To help us delve into this subject, special guest Lily Zhou will join Melissa during Tuesday’s session. She is a clinical psychotherapist at United Family Hospital; she trained at Peking University and has experience in both public and private health institutes. Miss Zhou specializes in working with adults and adolescents, offering compassionate care to help them explore themselves, improve emotional, behavioral, or relationship problems, and promote the development of personality.
Lily Zhou will discuss brain development and hormonal changes during puberty and introduce the general developmental tasks and main challenges of adolescence. This will help parents and teachers better understand the psychological development of young people during this thrilling and challenging period of life. She will also share with participants how to support the healthy growth of young people.
