Influenza (Flu) Vaccine Q&A
1. What does this year's flu vaccine contain?
Each year, the WHO meets to decide on the composition of the flu shot for the coming flu season. In this year's flu vaccine, one of the A (H1N1) strains is new. Flu shot efficacy weakens after 6-12 months, so it is best to get an annual flu shot to prevent flu and its complications.
2. Who may not be able to receive a flu shot?
If you had a severe allergic reaction to a flu shot in the past, it may be best to avoid getting one. However, if you have an egg allergy, it should be okay as, according to health authorities in China and abroad, the egg content in the present vaccine is extremely low.
If you have a high fever or are
suffering from acute illness, you need to postpone your vaccination. Some flu
shot brands may list neomycin or gentamicin allergy as one of the adverse
conditions. Please check the patient consent form for any other risk factors or
adverse conditions and ask your doctor or nurse if you have any questions.
