Beijing United Family Hospital and Añejo FC combined to put on the Women's Football Tournament on August 24. The tournament was an exciting and energizing experience for players and spectators alike. Below we share some highlights of what we hope will become a new tradition in our beloved city!
The Women's Football Tournament was held at UBP, near 798 and just down the street from our main hospital, with BJU providing on-site medical support for the tournament. Each match was an exciting event to watch. Athletic women from a range of ages, nationalities, and professions came together in a spirit of sportsmanship to compete in the first edition of this tournament. The weather certainly was hot, but not as hot as the passion and dedication of the teams and their supporters. The strong camaraderie was as palpable as the fierce competitiveness, making the experience highly thrilling and heart-warming in equal measures.
The August heat didn't make things easy on the athletes. BJU Physiotherapist,
Jason Tam, a member of the medical team supporting the event, said, “to avoid
sports injuries as much as possible, prevention, protection, and being ready to
address any medical issues is important." Jason conducted a warm up session
with all participants prior the start of the matches and helped with post-match recovery.
While thankfully there were no orthopedic injuries, some participants were provided care for heat exhaustion and Jason provided physiotherapy interventions to those who needed it.
Doctor's Reminder
In order to prevent sports injuries, event participants should understand their bodies. It is advisable to conduct a health screening to make sure one’s physical condition and physical endurance are ready before the competition, and to take part in aerobic and anaerobic exercises to prepare for sports that require demanding cardiovascular exertion. Furthermore, any chronic sports injuries should be actively treated.
Heat affects people in a variety of ways. Symptoms include feeling dizzy or faint, decreased heart function, and sometimes other physical symptoms can arise. In hot climates it is also important to ensure you keep well hydrated and protect yourself by using sunscreen. A hat can also be helpful in protecting you from sun stroke.
