Healing My Relationship with My Parents After Dropping Out of College.
sb's formative teenage years
Many formative experiences were shared: their first trip to the cinema, their first visit to an Asian restaurant, and, as they reveal a few months later over Zoom, their first online activism.
In many cases, children who are in the formative stage may imitate and follow those celebrities’ ways of thinking and living.
children who are in the formative stage, children who are in their formative years 就可以用来与teenagers同义替换。
02
Growing up, I've always compared to my older sister.
... and all that 指「...
It was made quite clear to me that...
That my parents valued education above everything else and that the one and only end goal was to get into a good college // was made quite clear to me.
短语 make sth clear to sb 指「明确地告知某人」。It was made quite clear to me that...
value A above B 指「重视...
Many employers value personality above experience or qualifications.
I mean, it's not so bad if tonight is our only night, right? To our one and only night together.
04
And throughout my childhood I had the privilege of attending a lot of outside classes such as art classes, sports, SAT prep, Chinese class, all of these prep classes.
have the privilege of doing sth
attend sth 指「参加」,可以替换我们熟悉的take part in sth, engage in sth。
attend a lot of outside classes
Urban pupils attend cramming classes for more than 10 hours a week, according to Deloitte, an accountancy firm.
I was attending a sort of book event.
But because I was an only child, I had all these expectations that were placed on me. And When I couldn't meet them all. I would be met with disappointment and disapproval. And that really tends to take a toll on someone who's really young and really impressionable.
place sth on sb 指「把...
place expectations on sb
I have all these expectations that were placed on me
be met with sth 和meet with sth一样,都可以表示「遭到,遭受,获得」(to get a particular reaction or result),后面常跟表示态度或情绪的词。
这里be met with disappointment and disapproval 便指:我会遭遇(父母的)失望和反对。
Instead, the government’s latest attempt to reverse the trend of declining fertility was met with cynicism and indignation.
D选项中的 have met with fierce opposition 便指「遭到强烈反对」。
Your grandmother's passing has taken quite a toll on Frank.
The pandemic has taken a devastating toll on the physical health of millions of people. But the mental-health effects could prove even more enduring.
Smartphones can be addictive and distracting, taking a heavy toll on teenagers' mental health.
While ChatGPT can be a useful tool for learning, an excessive reliance on it takes a heavy toll on students‘ creativity and originality.
Being even able to attend college is a privilege in itself that I will never stop being grateful for. But first year of college I was not doing so hot. I was not doing great mentally. I was not doing great grade-wise.
sth is a privilege in itself.
Lobbying is not in itself corrupt, of course.
I was not doing great mentally. I was not doing great grade-wise.
You're gonna do great.
So where are you right now, mood-wise?
07
I think this was where I started developing into a very avoidant person. I would ignore their messages, their calls for weeks on end. I really could not deal with any more disappointment on their end.
I think this was where I started doing sth.
develop into sb / sth
for+时间+on end 指「连续多久」。 for weeks on end
... your best friend who tolerated you whining about this girl for weeks on end.
I really can't deal with any more pressure.
Devotion on my end has not been a problem.
Well, don't worry. I've been slacking on my end, too.
08
I still went back to visit them in California but it just felt like we were walking on a ton of eggshells. There was just so much tention in the space.
There was just so much tention in the space.
如果要形容「与父母的关系紧张」,我们可以说:have a strained relationship with parents。
09
I wouldn't say that my relationship with my parents is completely healed, but we're getting there! We've reached a point of mutual understanding where our perspective on life might not align exactly but respect each other's choices and that makes me really happy.
I wouldn't say that... But...
I wouldn't say that London is very safe, but it is not as dangerous as social media makes it to be.
be getting there 便指「正朝着目标前进,正在进步」,相当于be making progress。
The hospital isn't up to snuff, but it's getting there.
I know it's overwhelming, but you're gonna get there.
reach a point where...
And though the Fed’s backstopping of the system will probably avert a banking meltdown, policymakers should never have got to a point where such extraordinary interventions were needed.
But you reach a point where you can't live a lie anymore.
And I've reached the point where I'm not taking shit from anyone.
our perspective on life might not align exactly
And since your interests and hers don't quite align, I can't represent you both.
align sth with sth 指「使...
They have to align with the mission of the magazine.
It‘s been said though that you're aligning yourself with labor party policy.
10
When I was younger, I was often immature and didn't fully grasp my parents' intentions. However now I understand that they just wanted the best for me. As I've gotten older, I've come to appreciate just how much they sacrificed and I'm very grateful for everything.
didn't fully grasp my parents' intentions
He has not yet grasped the importance of fidelity.
have a good / firm grasp of sth
have a poor grasp of sth
Although reproduction is one of the most basic aspects of human biology, scientists have an astonishingly poor grasp of how a new life comes about.
want the best for sb
She is just a commited teacher. You know. She really wants the best for her students.
