The idea of a dog as a “starter kid” is a cliché at this point—but there’s a bit of truth to it. Millennials have delayed having children, adopted dogs in droves, and frequently consider those pets to be as much a part of the family as any human, as my colleague Katherine J. Wu recently reported. Many are raising a dog before they have a baby. In fact, in a 2021 survey commissioned by a pet-food brand, four in 10 dog and cat parents said that they got their pet to test whether they were ready for a kid. Of course, raising animals is in many ways not at all comparable to raising children, and no one who doesn’t actually want a dog should get one as a practice baby. That said, pet parenting does have things to teach future parents of humans. Some connections, such as “potty” training, are obvious. But on a broader level, getting a pet requires taking responsibility for another living thing’s well-being. The experience can offer insight into your tendencies as a caregiver—and, with the right amount of self-awareness, a chance to grow.

① The idea of a dog as a “starter kid” is a cliché at this point—but there’s a bit of truth to it.

I'm not interested in participating in tribal adolescent cliché.

When else are you gonna get to see a very Hollywood cliché crammed into the same room?

-It's kinda sweet. - Kinda trite.

    It's a little trite, don't you think?
  • at this point 指「此时,现在」,可以替换now。

What I did or didn't do doesn't matter at this point.

Also, I know that my apologies are pretty much meaningless at this point.
  • There is truth to sth sth.
There is a bit of / some truth to sth
Still, there is some truth to Mr Cowen’s diagnosis that America’s strength is undermined by its divisions and by a willingness to protect the powerful.

There is more to sb / sth than meets the eye.

Maybe there is more to me than meets the eye.

Well, it has been suggested to me there might be more to her death than meets the eye.

Millennials have delayed having children, adopted dogs in droves, and frequently consider those pets to be as much a part of the family as any human, as my colleague Katherine J. Wu recently reported.

Why health-care workers are quitting in droves?

Indians are switching to digital payments in droves.
Young people were leaving the countryside in droves to look for work in the cities.
Cooped up at home and unable to visit brick-and-mortar stores, millions of Chinese consumers began watching livestreams in droves.
  • consider sb / sth (to be) sth 指「认为...
  • as much +名词+ as sb / sth 这个句式表示「和某人/某物一样,是...」。
... to be as much a part of the family as any human
But honest and open conversations with the dying should be as much a part of modern medicine as prescribing drugs or fixing broken bones.

③ Many are raising a dog before they have a baby. ④ In fact, in a 2021 survey commissioned by a pet-food brand, four in 10 dog and cat parents said that they got their pet to test whether they were ready for a kid.

  • raise a dog 指「养狗」。

We wanted to raise you together.
    commissioned by a pet-food brand是一个过去分词短语作后置定语,修饰a survey,指「一家宠物食品品牌委托进行的调查」。

Whose portrait do you think Mr Elton has commissioned me to paint?

It's the official portrait commissioned by both Houses. It's your present.
  • dog and cat parents

⑤ Of course, raising animals is in many ways not at all comparable to raising children, and no one who doesn’t actually want a dog should get one as a practice baby.

  • in many ways 指「在很多方面」。
    And indeed
in many ways children are better off than they were a generation or two ago.
Though gigging is usually seen as something that young people do,
in many ways it suits older people better.
ChatGPT could change education for the better in many ways.

be comparable to sth 指「可与相提并论,可与相比」,相当于be as good as sth, be on a par with sth。

Rodney Brooks, a professor at MIT, reckons that driverless services comparable to those offered by conventional taxis are unlikely before 2032.

Blind people report that so-called 'facial vision' is comparable to the sensation of touch on the face.

  • be comparable to sth还可表示「与...类似」,相当于be similar to sth。

The author believes that exploring one's phone contents is comparable to _________ .
    _________ 。

That said, pet parenting does have things to teach future parents of humans.  Some connections, such as “potty” training, are obvious.

That said, he would be willing to come in.

That said, I won't be petting you anymore.

But on a broader level, getting a pet requires taking responsibility for another living thing’s well-being.

on a broader level便指「从更宏大的层面来说」。

  • take responsibility for sth

We have to take responsibility for our own actions.
a living thing 便指「生物」。

Now, boys, taking care of a living thing is a big responsibility.

The experience can offer insight into your tendencies as a caregiver—and, with the right amount of self-awareness, a chance to grow.

    an insight into sth,指「关于...

You know, I have insight into the millennial female brain.

  • provide / offer / give  insight(s) into sth
The book provides insights into sth.

The book gives readers insights into sth.

The book provides fascinating insight into Chinese history and Chinese culture.

文中your tendencies as a caregiver 便指「你作为照顾者的倾向」。
  • the right amount (of sth)

  • offer a chance to grow
The experience  can offer:
and, with the right amount of self-awareness,
(the experience can offer) a chance to grow.
