In 2020, as the South Korean authorities were pursuing a blackmail ring that forced young women to make sexually  explicit videos for paying viewers, they found something else floating through the dark recesses of social media: pornographic images with other people’s faces crudely attached.

They didn’t know what to do with these  early attempts at deepfake pornography. In the end, the National Assembly enacted a vaguely worded law against those making and distributing it. But that did not prevent a crime wave, using A.I. technolog y, that has now taken the country’s misogynistic online culture to new depths.

In the past two weeks, South Koreans have been shocked to find that a rising number of young men and teenage boys had taken hundreds of social media images of classmates, teachers and military colleagues — almost all young women and girls, including minors — and used them to create sexually exploitative images and video clips with deepfake apps.

They  have spread the material through chat rooms on the encrypted messaging service Telegram, some with as many as 220,000 members. The deepfakes usually combine a victim’s face with a body in a sexually explicit pose, taken from pornography . The technology is so sophisticated that it is often hard for ordinary people to tell they are fake, investigators say. As the country scrambles to address the threat, experts have noted that in South Korea, enthusiasm for new technologies can sometimes outpace concerns about their ethical implications.

But to many women, these deepfakes are just the latest online expression of a deep-rooted misogyny in their country — a culture that has now produced young men who consider it fun to share sexually humiliating images of women  online.

“Korean society doesn’t treat women as fellow human beings,” said Lee Yu-jin, a student whose university is among the hundreds of middle schools, high schools and colleges where students have been victimized. She asked why the government had not done more “before it became a digital culture to steal photos of friends and us e them  for sexual  humiliation.”

Online sexual violence is a growing problem globally, but South Korea is at the leading edge. Whether, and how, it can tackle the deepfake problem successfully will be watched by policymakers, school officials and law enforcement elsewhere.

The country has  an underbelly of sexual criminality that has occasionally surfaced. A South Korean was convicted of running one of the world’s largest sites for images of child sexual abuse. A K-pop entertainer was found guilty of facilitating prostitution through a nightclub. For years, the police have battled spycam porn. And the mastermind of the blackmail ring investigated in 2020 was sentenced to 40 years in prison for luring young women, including teenagers, to make the videos that he sold online through Telegram  chat rooms.

The rise of easy-to-use deepfake technology has added an insidious dimension to such forms of sexual violence : The victims are often unaware that they are victims until they receive an anonymous message, or a call from the police.

#01

In 2020, as the South Korean authorities were pursuing a blackmail ring that forced young women to make sexually explicit videos for paying viewers, they found something else floating through the dark recesses of social media: pornographic images with other people’s faces crudely attached.

    pursue a blackmail ring

I know all about your drug ring.
  • explicit 还可表示「露骨的」 (language or pictures that are explicit describe or show sex or violence very clearly) ,常用来形容色情或暴力的图片、语言。
they found // something else // floating through the dark recesses of social media
  • the recesses of sth 指「某事物的隐秘之处,某事物的幽深之处」(the inner hidden parts of something)
这里the dark recesses of social media 便指「社交媒体的阴暗角落」。
He stared into the dark recesses of the room.
The doubt was still there, in the deep recesses of her mind.

#02

They didn’t know what to do with these early attempts at deepfake pornography. In the end, the National Assembly enacted a vaguely worded law against those making and distributing it. But that did not prevent a crime wave, using A.I. technology, that has now taken the country’s misogynistic online culture to new depths.

  • what to do with sth 指「拿…
While she yearned for some kind of companionship, her husband had more friends than he knew what to do with.
搭配为the attempt to do sth, the attempt at doing sth

We need to word our question carefully.
    He issued a very
strongly worded statement denying any involvement in the plot.
a poorly worded request that resulted in confusion因措辞不当而造成理解障碍的请求
  • the law against sb / sth 指「禁止…
make and distribute sth

I've been contending with the misogynistic world of journalism for 15 years.

  • take sth to new depths 指「让…

In the past two weeks, South Koreans have been shocked to find that a rising number of young men and teenage boys had taken hundreds of social media images of classmates, teachers and military colleagues — almost all young women and girls, including minors — and used them to create sexually exploitative images and video clips with deepfake apps.

  • a rising number of sb / sth

They have spread the material through chat rooms on the encrypted messaging service Telegram, some with as many as 220,000 members. The deepfakes usually combine a victim’s face with a body in a sexually explicit pose, taken from pornography.

chat rooms on the encrypted messaging service Telegram 指的就是Telegram的加密聊天室。

  • as many as 指「多达...」,强调数量比预期多。

    as early as …
China has for years had one of the lowest retirement ages among major economies. Men started life’s next chapter at age 60, while women did so as early as 50.
Preparations begin many years before, in some cases as early as pre-school, as parents try to give their children every possible edge.

The technology is so sophisticated that it is often hard for ordinary people to tell they are fake, investigators say. As the country scrambles to address the threat, experts have noted that in South Korea, enthusiasm for new technologies can sometimes outpace concerns about their ethical implications.

  • scramble to do sth  /  scramble for sth指「争抢某物,争先恐后做某事」(to struggle or compete with other people to get or reach something)
Thousands of people will be scrambling for tickets.
Parents have scrambled to find child care or to work from home.

The NTDs have just been issued. If everyone scrambles to exchange now, you won't get anything.

We are talking about ways to address conflicts with your peers, all right?

Face it. I outsmart you.
  • enthusiasm for sth 指「对...
  • concerns about / over / with sth 指「对...

But to many women, these deepfakes are just the latest online expression of a deep-rooted misogyny in their country — a culture that has now produced young men who consider it fun to share sexually humiliating images of women online.

In Japan, women have started a movement to fight workplace dress codes that require them to wear high heels. And in South Korea, women have challenged the country’s deep-rooted, rigid beauty culture with a campaign known as “Escape the Corset.”
The commission ignores that for several decades America's colleges and universities have produced graduates who don't know the content and character of liberal education and are thus deprived of its benefits.
  • consider sb / sth adj.
原文consider it fun to share sexually humiliating images of women online里,
to share sexually humiliating images of women online。
consider // to share sexually humiliating images of women online // fun
I did not consider it necessary to report the incident.
≈  I did not consider [to report the incident] necessary

“Korean society doesn’t treat women as fellow human beings,” said Lee Yu-jin, a student whose university is among the hundreds of middle schools, high schools and colleges where students have been victimized. She asked why the government had not done more “before it became a digital culture to steal photos of friends and use them for sexual humiliation.”

  • treat sb as sth 指「把...当作...

The country treats women like second-class citizens.

And you understand I have to treat this as a session.
my fellow passengers on the train

#07

Online sexual violence is a growing problem globally, but South Korea is at the leading edge. Whether, and how, it can tackle the deepfake problem successfully will be watched by policymakers, school officials and law enforcement elsewhere.

  • at the leading edge
Organised killers have a fascination with law enforcement.

#08

The country has an underbelly of sexual criminality that has occasionally surfaced. A South Korean was convicted of running one of the world’s largest sites for images of child sexual abuse. A K-pop entertainer was found guilty of facilitating prostitution through a nightclub.

  • convict sb of sth
    be convicted of sth
I used to run a company with 85 people.

我们平时说的「娱乐圈」可以用the entertainment industry / business / world来表达。
We can't have the world's greatest entertainer out here without a drink.
find sb guilty of sth
    We find the defendant guilty.
sb is found guilty of doing sth

Look like he skipped down after he was found guilty of defrauding a bunch of elderly people.

便利」(to make it easier for a process or activity to happen)

For years, the police have battled spycam porn. And the mastermind of the blackmail ring investigated in 2020 was sentenced to 40 years in prison for luring young women, including teenagers, to make the videos that he sold online through Telegram chat rooms.

sentence sb to X years in prison 便指「判某人有期徒刑XX年」。
  • mastermind  [ˈmɑːstəmaɪnd] 指「主谋」。
  • lure sb to do sth

The rise of easy-to-use deepfake technology has added an insidious dimension to such forms of sexual violence: The victims are often unaware that they are victims until they receive an anonymous message, or a call from the police.

  • the rise of sth 指「...
  • insidious [ɪnˈsɪdiəs] 为形容,指变化或问题「潜伏的,隐袭的,隐伏的」(spreading gradually or without being noticed, but causing serious harm)
How insidious is this type of citation manipulation?
But I think a magazine like "Minx" is harmful to the cause, maybe even a little insidious.
dimension 还可以表示「方面,部分」(an aspect, or way of looking at or thinking about something)
    这里
The rise of easy-to-use deepfake technology has added an insidious dimension to such forms of sexual violence
Her job added a new dimension to her life.
  • be unaware that ...
