Urbanization is a significant feature of China’s social development. While rapid and large-scale urbanization has brought profound social changes, it has also exposed residents to increasingly complex environmental risks. Understanding the mechanisms through which urban environments influence residents' well-being is essential for providing a scientific basis for effective social policy development.

Existing research has extensively explored the economic and social impacts of urbanization on well-being, but growing evidence underscores the pivotal role of the physical environment. Nevertheless, key challenges remain. For instance, multiple physical environmental risk factors often coexist, with collinearity and interactions complicating their individual contributions. These factors also intersect with individual characteristics, creating a dynamic network that makes isolating specific causal relationships difficult. Furthermore, while studies of micro-environments are relatively abundant, research on macro-environmental influences remains insufficient. Given China's vast territory and diverse geographical and climatic conditions, residents across regions face distinct environmental risks, further complicating the formulation of universal conclusions.

Our study aims to investigate the mechanisms by which urban physical environments on residents' well-being at both micro and macro levels, focusing on the multi-dimensional and interactive nature of these environments. By integrating data science methodologies, we extend traditional approaches to identify well-being risk factors and environmental mechanisms for diverse populations through a data-driven lens. The findings will provide a foundation for developing health policies, targeted environmental interventions, and evidence-based strategies for precision public health.
