Volunteer With Jiahui, A Gift for the Community

Since 2021, Jiahui’s volunteering program has focused on engaging the public through a volunteering and public education platform. This program emphasizes the importance of giving back and spreading awareness to strengthen the overall healthcare ecosystem.

Head of Social Work and Volunteer Office Bella Di said, “One of the defining features of Jiahui is the presence of genuinely caring volunteers who are eager to lend a helping hand. Their service makes a meaningful difference in the lives of patients, their families, and wider Shanghai community.”

Volunteers contribute to Jiahui in many ways:

1.Companionship for Patients: They provide emotional support for hospitalized patients to help ease patient’s anxiety during hospitalization. Some examples of the activities include conducting nutritional surveys, drawing pictures with children and having conversations with adults and seniors.

2.Public Health Initiatives: Volunteers support public health initiatives such as assisting in coordinating the patient flow for vaccine appointments and helping with public health information lectures at businesses and schools. They also participate in the hospital’s public health awareness events. The activities they help run break stigmas around health issues such as HIV, autism, and cancer.

3.Rapid Response Support: Volunteers assist nurses in the emergency department. They help nurses by organizing patients based on the urgency of their conditions and gathering basic information.

Daniel Beh

Once a rare disease patient at Jiahui, Daniel found hope and recovery within its walls. His gratitude led him to volunteer, offering comfort with his firsthand patient experience. “I often see the doctors and nurses who took care of me, and they still remember me. They supported me and encouraged me when I was at my most desperate.” Daniel can be found in the hospital as he meticulously attends to every aspect of customer service.

Ahnaleigh Simmonds

“Jiahui is my family hospital, so volunteering here made sense. My experience has reaffirmed my passion for medicine. Attending the Monthly Multidisciplinary Case Sharing Conferences is such a cool opportunity. Being a part of this community has solidified my future career goals.”

Yap Chee Gee

“Initially, I was a patient at Jiahui,” shares Yap. “Seeing my son’s classmate volunteer inspired me to join the program. My good healthcare experience made me want to contribute. I told the volunteer team about my skills in performing arts and experience with children, hoping to use my talents at Jiahui.”
