Dear Readers,
Parents & Kids joined hands with Shanghai Family this spring to share the same WeChat official account.
Since April 2024, we have published bilingual personal stories written by parents and kids about life and parenting every Thursday.
Life can be arduous, but our stories and experiences bind us in our humanity and make us feel less lonely in our struggles.
Today, the last Thursday of the year, I want to share Parents & Kids' top ten most-read articles and give an insight into what authors think while writing them.

The most popular article in 2024:
“Writing this article was my thank you and love letter to the city of Shanghai and everyone who helped make it home for 15 years. I wanted it to feel personal between the city and myself, like saying goodbye to an old friend with inside jokes and experiences only we shared."

2. My Singapore in Shanghai 我在上海的新加坡印记
"I was surprised by the popularity of this post, as I didn't expect our readers to take such an interest in Singapore! While listing the fun facts about Singapore, I tried hard not to sound like I was bragging about my country, and I had to let my teenagers vet them since teens serve you the truth straight up."

3. Shanghai – Expats’ gaze 外国人眼中的上海
"Getting expats to contribute their favourite part of being in Shanghai was a last-minute idea—just six days before publishing! The original idea was to write my favourites about Shanghai, but it suddenly struck me that more heads are better than one. I thank everyone who helped connect and contributed to this article!"

4. Parents & Kids WeChat Account Closing 1 July 微信公众号将于7月1日合并
“Before Parents & Kids shared the same WeChat official account with Shanghai Family, we had our own, and I managed it for 17 months. It was where I ventured from being an author to hosting lifestyle videos. I learned and grew a lot. Looking back, my experience then was incubating for what I am doing now."

5. Diving into Life after Cancer 投入癌症过后的生活
“I had the idea to write about life after cancer while I was bedridden. The bucket lists came up and back into the blue is one of them. While cancer can evoke constant depression, my journey revealed the strength and the power of positive craziness. By sharing my story, I hope to inspire others facing similar paths and remind them that cancer is not the end of life.”

6. Breathing the Same Air as Lewis Hamilton 与刘易斯·汉密尔顿呼吸同一片空气
"When I was tasked to write about my experience meeting Lewis Hamilton, I wanted to be honest about not knowing F1 racing rather than pretending to be. Me dozing off at the F1 race with my husband so many years ago was a story he often told, and I thought it would be hilarious to include that!"

"I loved having the opportunity to write this article while enjoying the holidays in Shanghai and reflecting on our time there. Every year, we count an additional year of living in Shanghai, and we feel truly blessed. We couldn't imagine living elsewhere, and this article was a tribute to our love affair with the city."

8. This Crazy Thing called Ageing 衰老这件疯狂的事
"I was raised by strong women who aged naturally and proudly wore their wrinkles. However, middle age is tricky when you're not that young, and neither are you that old. I call it the stage of denial. This topic is close to my heart as it impacts my daughter and her daughter in future. I hope to encourage women to embrace natural ageing as part of life."

"My husband, an introvert, does not like attention. When I decided to write our story of how we met, I sought his permission first, and to my surprise, he okayed it. After writing my first draft, I showed him again and was prepared not to publish it if he felt uncomfortable. He loved it and even laughed at the memories."

10. My grandmother “Ah Ma” 我的外婆“阿嬷”
"I had planned to write this article shortly after my grandmother's passing, but it took me a year to finally write it. During the writing process, I sobbed so much that I only managed to finish after three days of hibernating in my closet. Publishing this article felt very healing for me as readers shared with me their grief of losing their grandmother, too."
